SAYING IT WITH
FLOWERS ... The day after
pYblication of a Daily Pilot
article dctaifing the
Nc.wport-McSi Unified School
District's fondness for
Lifesavers candies,
Superintendent Mac Dernd
showed that he knows how to
roll with the punches.
The article noted that the
district goes through about S 175
worth of Lifesavers a year,
though nobody seems to be
certain who's really munching
them up.
Bernd, who says he doesn't
eat the stuff, couldn't resist
sending the Daily Pilot news
staff a floral arrangement with
Lifesavers -some red, some
white an~ several a mystery
opaque color -artistically
:utached to several sprigs
jutting out of the display.
The note was somewhat less
sweet than the candies: "Keep
up that 'investigative
journalism.'" There was a
postscript, too: "Paid for by
private funds."
Lifes:ivcr, anyone? Anyone?

TAXING N.6WS ... So \vc

Treasurer-Tax Collector, Costa
Mesa's own Mr. John
Moorlach, is already flexing his
authoritative muscles.
In a press release issued
f-riday, Moorlach "reminds" the
public that the second
installment of property taxes
urc due today.
The release quotes Moorlach:
"It is important fo r property
owners to not confuse April 10
with the April 17 income tax
dendline.''
Moorlnch is further quoted:
"Although the county could
certainly use the additional
revenues incurred from a 10%
late payment penalty plus a $10
cost charge, I certainly would
not like to see our tn.~paycrs
forced into making such a
contribution.''
He notes one more thing:
mnke the checks to "Orange
County Tax Collector" -not
Moorlach personally, as his
predecessor Robert Citron
preferred.
Yeah, John ... the check's in

NEWPORT BEACH -One
month after receiving a gunshot
wound to the head, Newport
Beach police officer Dob Henry
took a startling turn for the worse
over the weekend, developing a
blood clot in one of his lungs.
The clot prompted Hoag Memo-
rial Hospital Presbyterian doctors
to downgrade Henry's condition
from serious to extremely critical
and to move him into the hospi-
tal's intensive care unit.

Just recently, Henry had showed
signs of improvement and was
moved out of intensiv.e care.
"This marks a big seLback for
the officer who spent the l:ist week
in a regular hospital room in up-
graded condition," hospital of-
ficials said in the statement. "In
fact, Henry's condition hnd been
so stable last week that Hoag had
planned to soon transfer Henry to
a rehabilitation hospital."
Henry, 30, was shot shortly after
4 a.m. March 12 outside the New-
port Harbor Lutheran Church on
16th Street. Police found Henry
unconscious, lying beneath the
body of Carlos Caicendo, 24, of
Garden Grove. Henry, a five-year
veteran of the police department,
has been in a coma since March
12.

According
tofu-
turologists,
multiple
marriages will be routine.
Divorce will be accepted as
a normal transition at vari-
ous stages of a long life.
With midlife crisis erupting
at 90, it's possible men witt
be recapturing their lost
youth with a younger woman
of 75.
Despite these radical
changes, there will still be
stalwart couples who cel-
ebrate their 1 lOth wedding
anniversary. However they'll
require a marriage consult·
ant on a retainer fee since
husbands and wives weren't
meant to live together that
long. Matrimony was de-
signed for a short, sweet
life. The longer we live, the
higher the divorce rate.
There's speculation that
future marriage contracts
will have a "Sunset Clause"
enabling couples to avoid a
lifetime commitment. If
we're going to have escape
clauses, there should also be
a "Sunrise Clause" for
young newlyweds who pick
out their lifetime partners
with less scrutiny than
choosing a skateboard.
Another matrimonial
challenge is midlife crisis
that deserves a "lligh Noon
Clause" releasing partners
to pursue their addlcpated
fantasies.
Predictably, multiple mar-
riages will create compli-
cated family relationships.
We'll have birth mothers, bi-
ological fathers, grandpar-
ents, step parents, ste p
grandparents, half brothers
and sisters, all on a towering
family tree.
Picture a Thanksgiving

A living example of to-
morrow's longevity is Jean-
nie Louise Calment, a
French woman in Paris who
recently celebrated her
120th birthday. She offered
no secret fo r outwi11ing the

Nautical museum opening
grounded by permit snafus
BY EVAN HENERSON, STAFF WJ.ITEI.
NEWPORT DEACH -The
opening of the Newport Harbor
Nautical Museum at its new
location aboard the Reuben E.
Lee barge in Newport Harbor has
been delayed by an ongoing effort
to garner permits, museum
officials said last week.
A hearing before the city's
Planning Commission last
Thursday was rescheduled for May
4, which means the museum could
not get final approval from the
City Council until May 8 at the
earliest.
"The museum has opted to
submit additional information to
city staff so that we can obtain one
complete conditional use permit
in stead of going back to the city as
needs for the museum are
modified," said Jeffrey Littell,
director of the museum's capital
development group.
"We probably won't open until
July. If we can do it sooner, we
will."
In a staff report, city planner
Jay Garcia determined the
museum had met most of the
requirements to satisfy the city's
general plan and coastal land use
plan. Museum administrators have
not finished the applications to
conduct live entertainment and
serve alcohol in the museum cafe,
according to Liuell.
"We tllought it would be belier
to submit all the permit
applications at once rather than
do it piecemeal," Littell said. "The
liquor license is no problem. It's
not an issue."
Museum board president Art
Gransky said that workers could
probably start bringing displays to
the boat in June for an anticipated
July opening. The museum will
keep its current location on
Balboa Boulevard until the new
site is ready to open.
"The city has its own syste m in
place, and their way takes a little
white," Gransky said. "You can't
force your way through in a hurry.
There's still a lot of work yet to be
done."
After several months of
negotiations, the nautical
museum's board of directors
announced they had reached an
agreement with The Irvine Co.
and Family Restaurants Inc., the
parent company of Charley
Brown's restaurant. The museum
plans to take over Charley Brown's
lease in exchange for the donation
of the boat.
. The museum still needs
approvals from the state Coastal
Commission and the county of
Orange as wett as the city.

maps by hand had become
labor-intensive, particularly as
1he city planning department
was preparing to revise the
city's general plnn.
Drafters and cartographers

was implemented. Malkemus,
whose background is in geogra-

bringing GIS to Newport

"I got sick of licking eras-

Since 1987, the GlS dc-

refining the base map of the

One of the reasons the city's

Clauson echoed Burnham's re-

...,_ Losing streak ends on Urban's
seventh·inning homer; Sailors
host Orange Lutheran today.
Bv BAJUlY FAULKNER, Sro1ns WIUTl.ll
NEWPORT DEACH -Things looked
ominous Saturday for Newport Harbor
High's baseball team, entering the seventh
losing, 2-1, after visiting Orethren Chris·
tian erased its precarious lead in the sixth.
But, just when il appeared the devasta-
tion of losses (seven straight heading into
the Pride of the Coast Tournament open·
er) was about to continue, Coach Kirk
Dates and his Sailors witnessed an omen
of the positive variety.
Wit h one ou t an no one on, Scott Sand-
strom's bunt attempt appeared to be
headed for foul territory along the third-
base line.
But, Brethren third baseman Mike Le-
gasdi, who doubled in the tying run and
scored the second for the Warriors ( 4-8),
charged and barehanded it in fa ir territory
with no chance to nail Sandstrom at first.
Sandstrom stole second on the next
pitch and advanced to third when the
throw went into center fi eld. Sandstrom
remained at third, howeve r, when the sec-
ond out was popped up to second base.
With sophomore Joe Urban al the
plate, junk-balling Drcthren reliever Tony
Dybas skipped a 1-1 wild pitch by the
catcher, allowing Sandstrom to score the
tying run.
Two pitches later, Urban hammered an
emphatic harbinger of good fortune ov.er
the left-fi eld fence for a 3·2 Newport vic-
tory.
"It's been awhile," said Dates, who will
likely spent the rest of the weekend with
an car-10-ear grin. "That was a good win,
and one we can build on."
Urban, who opened on the mound with
five strikeouts in three no-hit innings, be-
fore exhausting his IO-inning eligibility for
the week, said he was glad to end the dis-
appointing recent stretch.
''We knew it was important to get a win
and we came 10 play today," sai<l Uri.Ian,
who said he requested the start, despite
pitching seven innings Thursday in a 3-2
loss to Irvine.
"l wanted the ball, and l wanted to get
a chance at the plate in the last inning,"
explained Urban, who choked up to nail
the outside 2·2 changeup that ended it.
"That's the second seventh-inning home
run I've hit in my (va rsity) ca.reer, so I'd
rank them both equally," said Urban, who
now has three round-trippers this spring.
"He bowed his neck and got the job
done for us," Dates said of Urban, who
gave way on the mound to fellow sopho-
more Danny Pulido.
Pulido, who earned his second win,
yielded five hits and struck out three, in-
cluding the fin al out of the seventh with
two aboard.
Sandstrom joined Urban with two hits
fo r the hosts, singling in Rell Coluccio in
the second to open the scoring. Sandstrom
also had two of Newport's six stolen
bases.

Relaxed Mesa lets it all hang out

COSTA MESA -With no scouting re-
port, no pressure, and no Pacific Coast
League standings on the line, there was
no stopping the Costa Mesa High hitters
in the opening round of the Pride of the
Coast Tournament Saturday at the Mus-
tangs' diamond.
Relaxed but rewed, Mesa (6·6) played
pepper with the outfield fence, smoking
four doubles and two triples among its 11
hits en route to a 10·5 triumph over Ran·
cho Alamitos.
Coach Doug Deats' Mustangs take on
Century today at home in an 11 n.m.
quarterfinal. Dents, in his second caM>n,
has not beaten the Centurions in four
tries.
Rancho could only try to quell the iz·
zlina Mesa bats. which answered a Va·
quero home run to lead orr the game with
'
three first-inning runs .
The hosts posted· four more in the sec·
ond, thanks to RBI by Charles Chatman,
Josh Cant and Matt Droesamle, but Ran-
cho (5· 7) made the most of its second of
only three hits, closing to 1-S with a Ger·
aid Laird grand slam in the third.
Mesa junior Mike Adelmund, who went
the distance for his fi~t win of the season,
shut things down from there, issuing only
one walk and no hits in the final four
frames.
"He really slammed the door," Deats
!lid of the right-hander, who was backed
by flawless defense in addition to the
Mustangs' potent ll·hit barrnge.
"We swung the bats well," 53id Deats,
who said the tournament atmosphere was
a welcome respite from the rugged PCL
wars. •
"We <Jidn't have a scouting report on
Rancho, M> our kid weren't thinking
about tendencic or anythin• else but ju t

"We needed that."

Eight Mesa starters ha.d at least one hit
and nine RBI were shared by even Mus·
tangs. Senior catcher John Schroeder
went 2 for 2 with one RDI, two walks and
three runs, but didn't get in on the extra-
basc bonanl.a.
Chatman, the senior leadoff man, al o
lashed a pair of singles in four trips and
had one of the hosts' three stolen bases.
Cant added a triple to his fi~t-inning

his fi~t two plate. appearances.
