Report: suspect
shot Henry~ then ·
killed himself
BY Ev AN HENBR.SON, STAFF WkJTla
The bullet that critically wound-
ed Officer Bob Henry came from
Carlos Caicedo's gun. Caicedo
then shot himself with the fallen
officer's .45-ca liber service pistol,
according lo preliminary data re-
lc:ised Thurl>day by the Orange
County Di!>trict A ttorney's offi ce.
A final reporl will await the re-
su lls of l:ib and coroner's tests. No
other su!>pccts are believed to have
been involved in the March 12 in-
cident, which left Caicedo dead
and Henry in critical condition.
Henry died at Hoag Hospital
Thursday morning.
"Tests will not change the .facts
which indicated that Officer
Henry's fatal head wound was
from Caicedo's .38 revolve r and
Carlos Caicedo's death is consis-
tent with a self-i nnictcd wou nd,"
said Supervbing Deputy District
Attorney Chris Evans in a pre-
pared !>tatcment.
Officers speculate that a strug-
gle took place bel\veen l lenry and
Caicedo, \\hose blood alcohol level
was .16. Whether the officer inter-
rupted Caiccdo's suicide attempt
has not been determi ned and the
district attorney's investigation
"has not established that Caicedo
and Henry knew each other prior
to the incident."
"There is more to come out,"
Evans said. "And the investigation
is still continuing."
TI1c circumstances surrounding
the in cident huvc remained my!>le·
rious since police officers discov·
ercd the two bodies near the Cast-
aways site during the early morn-
ing hours of Sunday, March 12.
Newport Oe:ich Police offtcers
confirmed early that the two guns
found at th e scene had been fired.
Subsequent investigations re-
vealed that Caicedo, a 24·year-old

Service organizations have host-

raise funds for 1he family. A
Wednesday night benefit :u New-

$6,400, according to restaurant
General Manager Joe Thomson.
Donations have poured ioto a
trust fund established through the
police departJ,nent. At le:ist two
more benefits will take place later
this month. Oonis would not say
how much the fund has collected.
"Because of the con artists out
there, all we're saying is that the
community has been very generous
and very supportive."' Gonis said.
Residents said they were not
surprised by the community-wide
efforts. Newport DC<lch, thoy said;
is a city which stands behind its
law enforcement agencies.
"Unfortunately, this brought the
eomn1unity togethc.!r," said Danny
Marchcano, owner of The Arches
re~taurant. "It's remarkable."
Pat Michaels, who supported
the recent Take A Cop To Lunch
Day, said that the community's re-
action was born of more than just
local spirit.
"It's a whole bunch of things,"
Michaels suicJ. "It's the way the
(0.J . Simpson) defense is treating
those officers down in Los Ange-
les.
"This community has been able
10 ~ecp down crime and this is an
appreciation and :in anger over
the fact that ''c don't :ipprcciate

Lia Roussel and Laura Wilson of Newport
Harbor High, who combined to set a Tustin
Relays record April 7 in the girls shot put by
seven ft:et, will compete against the best in the
nation today in the discus and shot put at the
prei.tigious Mt. San Antonio Relays.
Heuds, th e school's top disc us thrower, who
has the third best murk.-in Orange COunty this
season (135 feet, 11 inches), will also compete
in the women's open hammer throw at 3:30
p.m. today, along with her sister, Gina, a fresh-

Competition In the girls discus begins at 9:30
a.m., with the shot put scheduled for 12:30
p.m. The Mt. SAC Relays, th e Arcadia Invita -

elite high school track and field invitationals i'n

Wilson, who won the shot put at the Tustin
Relays with a throw of 38-2, Heads (37-6) anti
Rousset (36-10) finished 1-2-3 in the event to
established a meet record.
"They're all pushing the shot P,lll pretty ,,eu,
but there's a little lull in the discus," said Tony
Ciarelli, Newport Harbor throwing and weight
conditioning coach. "In the discus, we didn't
place (at Tustin), and we should've set a meet
record, which is 357 feet, because they've gone
135 (Heads), 128 (Roussel) and 122 (Wilson).
"Hopefully, we can d uplicate (today) in the
shot put what we .uid at Tu!.tin. When you go
to these meets, you go up against the best peo-
ple, so you're looking for PRs (personal
records}. Winning is a great thing if it happens,
but r\!ally you're looking fo r PRs."
Wilson and Heads had PRs in the shot put
at Tustin. Rou~set threw '38·2, a personal best,
