Woman was fiancee of slain Newport millionaire . She is accused of writing checks totaling $500,000. BY CAROLYN MILLER, SrAFF w._nn NEWPORT DEACH -.The 29- year-old fiancee of slain Newport Beach millionaire William Francis Mclaughlin will be arraigned this morning on charges she forged $500,000 in checks from McLaugh- lin's accounts; including one check duted th e duy he was shot to death in his Ilalboa Coves home. Sound tests don't raise ruckus with neighbors ...,. Pacific Amphitheatre conducts experiments in effort to remedy complaints from nearby residents. DY CAROLYN ~llLLER, STAH WRIHR COSTA MESA -The sound testing for Pacific Amphitheatre was apparently so mufOcd that while the testing was under way, residents were calling fair repre- sentatives asking when the noise would begin. "We had someone on the switchboard taking calls from peo- ple calling during the sound tests, asking when is it going to hap- pen/' said Jill Lloyd, spokesperson for the Orange County Fair. "(Judging) by the eomrnents of the callers, it's as good sign." The testing Monday of I\\ o • sound systems, conducted by Santa Ana-based consultants Gordon Drickcn, was an effort 10 remedy the complaints from residents in the nearby Mesa del Mar and Col- lege Park areas. Their grievances, \\hi ch started more than 10 years ago, resulted in a class-action lnw~uit that was dropped when the Orange County Fair bought the amphitheatre in 1993. When fair officials assumed the amphitheatre's management responsibilities last year, they vowed 10 make changes to accom· mot.late the residents and hope-r ully terminate the complaints. Lloyd said fai r officials hope test results -expected in two weeks -will reveal Mesa dcl Mar and College Park residents aren't impacted by the concert bowl's sound. The testing was done Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. at fou r sites with- in the two neighborhoods. Out some residents feel the real test will be after 10 p.m. on a warm summer night, when a con- cert is playing while their windows are open. Nanellc Anne Johnston was ar- rested by Newport Deach police Monday at her home on Seashore Drive, where she and her two chil- dren allegedly lived with the 55- year-old McLaughl in fo r th ree years prior to his death on Dc.:c. 15, 1994. Johnston is also considered a suspect in McLaughlin's death, but Wind wallcers police ~aid her arre·s1 on grand theft and forgery charges is sepa- rate froin the homiciue cusc. Another suspc,ct in Mclaugh-· lin's death, Eric Naposki, plans to~ be in Harbor Municipal Court today to offer Johnston support. Neither Naposki nor Johnston . has been arrested in connection with McLaughlin's slaying. Na- poski simply wishes to offer his support to his friend by being in court today, his attorney Julian W. Dailey said Tuesday. Johnston is being held in Or- u11gc County Jail on S.500,000.'boiil. Prosecutors said thut during ht.:r arraignment today in I lurbor Mu- nicipal Court, they will urge the judge to keep her bail amount high because she is a night risk. Johnston is charged with 15 counts of forgery from checks she allegedly USl'd for her own benefit from McLaughlin's pl!rsonal uc- counl, including one cht.:ck from his business account, Deputy Dis- trict Allorney Jue D' Agostino said. I le said the checks were wrillc.:n for a ''hodgepodge" of Johnston\ "They tested in the nfternool) and got airport noise, bird noises . .. it could have been better te sted at night if they are really trying to ~ct worst-case scenarios," said res- ident Rusty Lusk. who allowed a .\L\llC ~IAkll'l/t)AILY 111LOf Brandon Balisteri, 4, doesn't quite fit into his father's sweatshirt yet as he and his mom, Cherise, make their way across a windy McFadden's Square in Newport Beach Tuesday. I mean, what is this? The ultimate in Jewish oxymorons? Local Scene Quit kidding, and pass the brisket. But there were overwhelming reasons to accept the invitation. Firstly, as a member of The Hummingbirds, I could risk expulsion by turning down a free meal. Secondly, I have · an abiding affection for 1hc hos1 family.' Thirdly, there was hunger mixed in with all that curiosity. And so, on the second night of Passover, son Jeff and I found ourselves being transported to the Dover Shores home of Kathy and Richard Poppers for ll memorable dinner. The setting w3S just like the good old sedcrs when, as the youngest m:ile at the rnblc, I'd a!ok The Four Questions -a role assumed S:iturday by their bright IO-year-old son David. And there was dear Elyse, the most enchanting young lady since the heyday of Delilah. lt was muhi'·talented Elyse Poppers, you may recall, who composed my official biogrnphy for the archives of Mariners Elementary School. Now, at the advanced age of 12, she's working o n two books dealing with more exciting subjects. Also gra,tHe table were Grandpa George, Grandma J oyne, and Aunt Mi ldred, whose company was so enjoyable that we never missed th~ invited Biblical guest, Elijah the Prophet, who once again was a no-show. But back to the non-traditional organic banquet. I ne\er should have doubted the all-around artistry of delightful Kathy Poppers, who's as gifted in the kitchen as she is at the cast!. Her abstract expressionistic painting.!> curr!=ntly adorn the Koll Center and two Lagunn Beach galleries, (The Ari Loft and FACT), and she'll soon be displayed at Gallery G in Costa Mesa. Also, she's a heallh-food addict. Take, please, her abstract impressions of two Passover staples, kishka and chopped Jiver. They were created, s'help me, entirely of mushrooms, string beans and eggplant. Heavenly. The ma1zoh balls were traditionaJ , but they graced "mock" chicken soup. It was my first experience with an ersatz chicken and I responded by asking for a second helping.· Delicious. .Gravy was roade from vegetable bouillon. Baked potatoes were stuffed with spinach and non-fol yogurt cheese. The fruit kugel was ugar-free. Oei.serts were divine; chocolate cake s:ins sug:ir and flour, larts of organically-gro\\ n peaches. The piece de resistJnce was an c~qua)ile broiled salmon, as Oal..y as a certtlin congressm:10 running for President. Natur<illy, I took home a thoroughly koshcri1.cd dogg1c bag, laden with sulmon nnd goodies from the.garden, and next day Jcrf and l enjoyed the feast nil over again. There was only one thing missing from those memorable seders of yesteryear. I mhscd the heartburn. 0 SHE'S NOT GOING QUIETLY -As everyone in town musl know by now, the popular neiBhborhood saloon known as Garrs -Costa Mesa's answer to TV's "Cheers," -will be relocating al month's end, making room for the expansion of Share our Selves on Superior Avenue. ' ARREST ,,. ...... 1 an nffair while McLaughlin and Johnston \\ere courting. Police became suspicious when they learned Johnston stood to re- ceive $150,000 from McLaugh- lin's will and another St million from his life insurance policy. Dul Dailey said Johnston and Naposki are "friends" and that being named in the search war- rant has "devastated" Naposl..i und damaged his career as a professional football player. Naposki -who is 240 pounds and 6-foot-2 -was named Most Valuable Player twice for the Barcelona Drag- ons in the World League and had earned a place on the NFL roster, B:.1iley said. But the neg- ative ·publicit9 from the ho- micide has jeopardized his ca- reer, according to Dailey. "He's had a hell of a time with employment because he lost the opportunity to play with Dau:alona in the World League0f American Football . . Decause of th e publicity, the league didn't want to take a chance with him," Dailey said. "He's devastated by the fact his name is splashed around the ne\\Spapcr as a !>Uspcct in this homicide because of his as- sociation with Nanette." Dailey wrote a letter dated April 6 -to the Orange County D~trict Attorney'!> of· fice in :111 effort to clear N:i- poski's name !lo he can be cm- plo)ed again. IJailey s:iid has not received a response. , , In the letter, ~iley states Naposl..i had an ali~i the night of the slaying and that his cli- ent htlS fully cooperated w11h Newport lJeach police investi- gators, including aJlo,,ing po· lice to take a blood sample on March 7. "(Investigators) haven't told us about the results .Jf that,", Bailey said. "l a~sume if any- thing is incriminating, they cer- tainly would have pursued it." Although search warrants state N:ipo)ki has no alibi for the time of the murder - which police say occurred at 9: 11 p.m. -Dailey said he has phone records that prove Na- poski placed a phone call at 8:52 p.m. Crom a restaurant in Tu$tin. "There's no ,.,,ay he could make it to kill in Newport Be:ich (by 9:11 p.m.)," Dailey said. While police do not have enough evidence to arrest Johnston or N:iposki on ho- micide charges, investigators did have enough to prosecute Johnston on theft and forgery after Mclaughl111's relatives re· vc:ilcd their suspicions that checks migh t have been forged, according to D'Agostino, who handles major fraud Cal.CS. D'Agostino saiJ evidence culled from interviews "ith McLaughlin's family members and bu!>incss as!>ociatcs, as \\ell as the checks themsehes and 01her documents, led to Johnston'!> arrest.
