Volunteers are
saluted for their
wonderful service
F rom Its inception, the Newport Beach
Public Library has relied on volunteers
to improve its quality of service to the
community. Once staffed solely by citizens
who donated their time, the system was
boosted last yenr by 15,250 hours of service
supplied grotis by the equivalent of 7.63
employees.
1 oday, 197 volunteers donaCe valuable time
· ot the Central Library and
at the system's three
branches. In May, as part of
the Diamond Jubilee
celebration, the library will
honor them at a Volunteer
Brunch funded by the
Friends of the Library.

The volunteers at
Mariners Branch form a
sma ll microcosm of the
larger program. Among
them is Jackie Miller, who
has donated at least one day
each week for the past 25
years. Ted Pearse, another
longtime volunteer, has contributed three to
four mornings a week since he began helping
"i1h inventory in I 980, doing everything from
processing magazines to serving as Santa
Claus last year.
Worl..ing "i1h Ted two mornings each week
is Reg Fifer, a 10-)eiH veteran at the branch.

runs in his family; his daughter is library

Other volunteers deliver library materials

~1cCollough hai. curried books, magazines
um! videos to the elderly, handicapped,
injured or ill. She has followed some of her
customers to convalescent centers when they
could no longer i.tay at home. Phyllis once
organized a cruise for her seniors on u
friend's yacht, an event that was memorable
for all, especially those who had to be carried
on by the captain.
For eight years, Vivian Kipper has been
delivering matcriJls 10 residents of Newport's
convalescent homes. Many look forward to
her visits, for both the materials she brings
and the time she spends. Others who provide
friendi.hip as well as materials to
convalescent home rei.idents include Toby

The key to the success of any library is
getting returned materials quickly re-shelved.
As circulation hJ'> increased, -.oluntcers ha' e

In add11ion to assil>ting with necessary

community needs. The goodwill they generate
contributes to efficiency, rcOected in the best
possible service to library customers. For
their role in providing this service, the library
salutes them.

The founder of the fnmiJy-run El
Ranchito restaurant chain and an avid
marathon runner -at the age of 72.
FOOTLOOll
Born in Guanajuato, Mexico, Avila
immigrated to the United States in
1944 to "make n better life for
himself."
After years of struggle, Avila and
his wif~ Margarita opened a •
restaurant in Huntington Park.
Through their hard work, El Ranchito
Mexican Re!>taurant expanded from
that small eatery to a chain of seven
restaurants in Orange County and Los
Angeles.
Now a resident of Corona del Mur,
Avila spends his spare time with his
six children, 13 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. He likes hunting and
fishing.
But, he loves running.
It's not a sport that he's been
devoted to all his life. It actually took
a while to get into his hobby.
For many years, he concentrated on
supervising his restaurnnl business,
and avoided strenuous exercise. And
he smoked.
Then, 15 years ago, upon the advice
· of his doctor, Avila threw away his
cigarettes and pulled his sneakers out
of 1hc closet.
Since 1hen, there's been no stopping
him -though a broken leg from a
Frisbee accident i.lowed him for a few
months. But, Avila quickly put himself
buck on track.
JUST DOIN' IT
Avila's tr:iining regimen:
On Mondays and Thursdays, he
walks. On Tuesdays, Fridays and
Saturdays, he rests. And, on
Wednesday and Sunday mornings,
Avila runs five to 15 kilometers in the
San Joaquin Hills near his Spyglass
Hill home.
When Avila heads lo the hills, he
forgets about his problems. "I just
think about the finish line," he said,
in Spanish, with his son Victor
PILOT PIOPU1 SALVADOR AVILA
translating.
Avila usually begins his workout
around 7 a.m. Once he begins his run,
nobody -not even the police -can
stop him.
Avila recounts how, one dark and
rainy morning, two policemen caught
up with him.
"Why arc you out in the rain? Arc
you lost?" they asked Avila .
THE FINISH LINE
Approximately twice a month, A' ila
races in SK and lOK marathons in
California and Mexico. Competing
against other septuagenarian runners,
Avila usually wins first or second
place. Sometimes, his grandchildren
run by his sitfe.
Avila and..t:f1is sons Victor, Sergio
and Salvador compete in triathlons,
which involve biking, swimming and
running. Often, groups can compete
as relay teams, with each person
completing one of the components.
While his sons bike and swim, Avil:I
runs.
Avila proudly displays his 55
trophies and awards in his expansive
house. nut, until recently, Avila still
felt incomplete: he wanted to run :i
marathon.
Avila decided to :ittempt the Los
Angeles Marathon. For weeks, he
trained, and on March 5, Avila and
son Victor ran in the Marathon. "I
neve r thought I would see it done,"
said Avila. "It was like a dream come
true. I felt proud as a peacock."
Next step? Avila plans to compete
in the Back Bay half-marathon on
May 21. Having completed a
marathon, "Now, Sks are nothing,"
boosted Avila.
Avila believe he sets a good
example for his grandchildren. "I
show them nothing is impossible to
:iccomplish as long us you ha ve the
will and desire,"said Avila. "Age is
not an obstacle."

~The Ninety-Nines, an
organization of female

Companions Seminar at
Orange Coast College.
BY ANNA MAJUl:l STOLLEY,
S1•tc1AL 10 TllE DAILY 1'1tor
Two years ago, Margie Smith
hated riding in her husband's
plane. A nightmare i.cenario
nagged the Newport Deach
homemaker and mother of four:
Her husband LDrry suddenly
slumps over the control panel. As
his Cessnn P-210 plunges
downward, Smith frantically grab~
the radio.
"Help! Help!"
The calm voice on the other end
says, "I con help you land safely.
Just tell me what the altimeter
reads."
But Smith doesn't know which
of the buttons, knobs and
mnchinery is the altimeter.
"OK," says the voice. "Con you
locate the compass?"
"No."
"The radar? The artificinl
horizon? The fuel gnuge?"
As Smith stares helplessly DI the
instrument panel, the pl.me
crashes.
Smith's fears prevented her
from enjoying her husb:ind's
POLICI FILES
hobby. Her nightmare almost
came alive one day when her
husband placed her hand on the
yoke (steering wheel) and said,
"You fly."
Terrified, Smith realized she
needed help.
She turned to the Orange
County ch:ipter of Ninety-Nines
Inc., an international organization
of f emnle pilots.
The Ninety-Nines and the
Fc<lcral Aviation Administration
provide an annual seminar for
non-pilots. Speakers discuss me-
thods of radio communication,
aerial navigation, the ins.trument
panel and how lo handle :in
emergency!
On Saturday, the group will
offer the Flying Companions
Semin:ir at Orange Coast College,
beginning at 8 a.m.
The Ninety-Nines, with more
than 7,000 members, can trace its
birth to a 1929 meeting of 99
fem ale pilots, including Amelia
Earhart.
Having taken the Flying
Companions class herself, Smith,
55, now highly recommends it. Her
fears are now replaced by confi·
dence and she happily joins her .
husband in his flying adventures. ·
"I absolutely love it," declared
Smith. "Total transform:i tion."

COSTA MESA -City of-

annex pockets of unincorporated

of influence .
. 'J:he 'City Council in January
listed the annex<itions on its tally
of goals and objectives for the
year.
Although the ureas are gov-
erned by the county, Costa Mesa
provides police and fire services
and waste disposal.
"And the city is not paid to
provide those services," said
Mayor Joe Erickson. "We feel
that since we're providing these
services to these areas, they
should be incorporated into
Costa Mesa." ·
But at a Leoguc of Colifornia'

officials learned that a bond

"A lot of the properties that are

said. "So, if we· were to try and

the property "lax is still pledged
to the county in return for the
bonds for John Wayne Airport."
Erickson said the city · still
plans to follow through with the
effort, but officials aren't sure
yet how long it will take.
"At 1his point, we don't rcoUy
know if there's a way around the
bond iss ue," Erickson said.
"With the bankruptcy, I don't
know where that leaves the

$3,000.
Ensign Intermediate was not the
only local group honored in the
38th annual Disneyland Com-
munity Service Awards. The fol·

checks and recognition for their
community work:
•Very Speoial Arts Orange
County, based in Costa Mesa, won
a $3,000 award in the ''Cultural

ergy" category.
• 0 & J Helping Others in

"Service Dy Or For Senior Citi-
tem,'' category.
According to Pau ben, Ensign
received the "Civic Communi ty
Service" accolade in part due to
the stutknt Ambas!.adors' efforts
over the past couple of years ..
In reccn1 ycurs, several school·
yard and clauroom incidents or
racial intolerance resulted in an
uncomCortable social environment.
Paulsen, concerned parents and
students set out to break down
racist attitudes.
Together with the Multi·
Cultural Parent Advisory Group,
the Ambassadors actively encour·
nge students to learn each other's
names. Theit o£Hepeated slogan
is "to know us is to love us."
Every Friday morning, the stu·
dents meet with Paulsen to discuss
cultural awareness. In March, the
students organized a week of ac·
tivities and lectures that cel-
ebrated the heritages of different
racial and ethnic groups.
At the end of their "Tolerance
Week," Rosa Delima, a Holocaust
survivor, spoke to the students
about her in ternment in a Nazi
concentration camp. The adoles-
cents solemnly absorbed her de-
scription of the destruction that
resulted from prejudice.
Today, members of the Ambas-
sadors and its subcommittee, the
Ethnic Forum, can see the fruits
of their labor.
. Where once racially segregated
cliques divided the school, now
students of all racial and ethnic
backgrounds intermingle in the
ha llways, cafeteria, and at school
dances. 1tuC1ents said.
"Kids are united in the schooJ,"
said Hank Hsieh, 14.
"We all got to knOWif each
other,'' Jennifer Owighi: 14,
agreed.
Paulsen praised the students'
hard work. "You have brought not
only fame , but also fortune to En-
sign," the principal said.

"Th~.-Vo places arc similar, ex·

said. .-Sugar 'N' Spice is her first r>usi-
ne ss venture.
"Well, I wanted to make an in·
vestment and started to look for
property, then I found this place,"
Paulsen and the &tudcnts have
no plans to rc1t on their laurels.
In their Friday morning meetings,
they will orpnlze further events.
The $3,000 award will be usea
to purchase additional books and
materials on culturaJ awareness.
Also, Paulsen wants to produce
and distribute an educational
video.
she said. "l never really thought
about a business, but 1 thought,
'What the heck!' "
Connolly might do some renova-
tion work on the building later,
but for now, she is a faithful stu-
dent of Banto, learning the finer
points of a soda fountain.
Banto brought waitress experi-
ence . with her to the. shop more
than two decades ago. She has run
the .s~op herself the entire time.
She will continue to live on the is·
land after Mr retirement.
After she shows Connolly the
ropes, Banto will catch up on trav-
el and oversee the building of a
new oceanfront vacation home in
the San Juan Islands, said her
daughter Janet Jones, a Costa
Mesa resident.
"She deserves the rest after all
these years," Jones said.

A fter 16 seasons as 'rresflman coach
at Corona del Mar High, Paul Orris
wasn't sure he was the guy to man
the watchtower of the by-then perennially
powerful varsity program, when named as
the late Jack Errion's successor in 1986.
''Tandy Gillis was the varsity
coach at the time, and J don't ·suppose he
was too happy to have a freshman coach
with so little experience," Orris recalled.
"But I shut my mouth, observed a lot of
what he did, and he was gracious enough
to answer some of my questions.
Jt wasn't, in fact, too dissimil:ir to the
apprehension that accompanied Orris into
the CdM gym for his first practice in 1970.
South All-Stars Coach Paul Orris
''When I was applying for the job as a
math teacher, 1 mentioned I had an
interest in basketball, although I didn't
hQve any coaching experience to speak
of," Orris recalled. "I didn't know what
(coaching) entailed, or what 1 needed to
"l suppose when I look back at some of
lhe things I did that fir:.t year, I'd say they
~ere, well, weak."
Orris prospered under Gillis for six
seasons, then gleaned some of Errion's
infinite hardwood wisdom for 10 more,

What Orris docs know, all agree, is
man-to-man defense, which has become as
intertwined with Sea King hoops as Orris'
trademark towel, which sits draped over
his wrist during games.
"I'm certainly not any kind of
innovator, when it comes t<? offense," said
Orris, who has a running joke with some
of his peers that the first to 40 points
wins. "But I learned long ago that if you
play tough defense, and you could get kids
to play together offensively, by and large
things were going to work out pretty well
for you.
"I always believe in the old adage that
you need to rub some sweat on guys,"
Orris said of his hard-nosed defensive
philosophy, which has gained respect from
scores of coaches in Orange County and
beyond.

"He's really al the top of his game,''
Estancia Coach Paul Troxel said of Ca-
brera, who won his third straight decision
by handcuffing the first-place Hawks,
walking one and striking out three, in·
eluding the· final two outs.
"He feels like there's nobody out there
who can beat him ," continued Troxel, who
also praised the Eagle defense, which pro·
duced a pair of early-inning double plays
and fielded most of the J 3 Hawk ground
balls without Oaw.

"You normally don't get away with

have played their way into such consider-
ation themselves by winning their last
three PCL contests.
Estancia (10-8, 4-4 in league) is only 1 'h
games behind Laguna Hills (10-7, 5·2),
entering today's rematch at the Hawks' di-

"We're not going to Disneyland after
this win," deadpanned Troxel, who said
his team's mental toughness has helped it
overcome some early PCL struggles.
"We're here for only one reason (the
league championship)," Troxel explained.
"These kids never bung their heads, never
made excuses, and now we're in this thing
for the long hnul. We know we have to

COSTA MESA -Never did a reliever
get up in the bullpen to warm up.
Matt Droesamle of Costa Mesa High
and University southpaw Tim Blackburn
were li~c two heavyweights punching it
out until one dropped. They would either
win or lose for their respective teams.
"When lhe chips arc down in the end,
(Blackburn) is the Quy we. want on 'the·
hill," s"aid Unive, rsity Coach Chris Conlin,
whose ace walked home the tying and
winning runs in the last inning, as host
Costa Mesa edged University, 4-3, in Pa-
cific Coast League baseball action Thurs-
day, pulling the Mµstangs (8-8, 4-3 in
PCL) in the thick of the playoff chase.
"It was a huge win for us," said Costa
Mesa Coach Doug Deats, whose squad
won for the th ird time this season in its
final at-bat. "That keeps us right in the
hunt."
Broesamle, who gave the Mu stangs a l ·
0 lead with his first home run of the sea·
son leading off th e fourth, struggled with
his control throughout. In no inning did
he retire the side in order.
"Sometimes you don't have your best
stuff, and you need to find ways to get
people out," Deats said of Droesamle,
who improved to 2-1, while yielding only
one earned run.
Droesamle gave up two runs in the top
of the seventh, as Uni (9-10, 4-4) finally
converted on scoring opportunities, after
putting runners aboard in every inning,
ye t scoring only once.
Costa Mesa rallied. aga inst Dlackburn
(3·5), who struck out eight in the first five
innings, but clearly didn't have the same
com ... rnnd in the late innings.
Mesa first baseman Mike Adelmund
opened the seventh with a bloop single to
right. Julius Vasquez, the Mustangs' des·
ignated hitter, followed with a rocket to
left , moving Adelmund up 90 feel.
Jeremy Starns twice was unsuccessful
on sacrifice attempts, putting him in a
quick 0-2 hole. But Blackburn lost him,
loading the bases with a walk.
Ray Ohrel singled to center, scoring
Adelmund, while Vasquez got a late jump
and had to hold at third.
An out later, Charles Chatman, Mesa's
leadoff hitter, walked on a 3·2 fastball
that was just low. Vasquez touched home
10 tie it, with the bases remaining full.
Josh Ctint, after fouling away a 3-1 fast·
ball, took ball four on a pitch high to
score Starns for the gume-winner.
"I'll tell you one thing, our kids don't
quit," Deats s:iid. "Last time we played
Uni, we lost by one run and had a big
rally in the Inst inning. I gambled today
and lost, but got lucky in the end."
Deats was referring to the sixth, when,
in a 1-1 deadlock, Broesamle came to the
plate with runners on first and second and
nobody out. Deats gave him the green
light, rather than sacrifice. It backfired.
"I shouldn't have had him swing away,
because he hit into a double-play, but he's
hitting .415 and he'd already hit a ding,"
Deats said.
On the mound, Brocsamle had given up
only three hits through six innings, but de·
fensive lapses by Mesa's battery aided the
Trojans' seventh-inning, two-run rally. A
single, a dropped pop-up behind the
plate, a wild pitch, a passed ball and two
walks (one intentional) loaded the bases
for Uni.
Brett Lockwood followed with a double,
scoring Nick Diete r and John Park.
Uni still had two runners in scoring po-
sition with one out, and its best hitters
coming up (Ethan Stahl and Justin Dun·
ning). But Broesamle got out of the jam,
coaxing Stahl and Dunning to ground out.
