Introducing Mr. Irrelevant XX BY ROGER. CAlu.sON, Sroan Eorroa CORONA DEL MAR -The tone of a telephone ring at the horn~ of Jerrott Willard never sounded.better Sunday afternoon, commg in the form of a call from the Kansas City Chiefs who want him for their football team. ·' "This is just huge," said Willard. "lt's really where !•wanted to be. It's ideal." The former Corona de! Mar High star, wh6 started and ex- celled with h.onor~ f<?r fo ur ye~rs at the ~niversity of California at Derkeley 1s rehsh1ng the faith the Chiefs have shown in the form or a fifth-round draft pick of the 6-foot-2, 235-pound line- backer at the NFL's 1995 Draft in New York City. The Chiefs went for Willard despite the fact he was unable to perform in any of th e "combines" or workouts which dot the pro scene because of knee injuries which cut his abilites to nearly 50 percent as a senior. Even hobbled, however, Willard was an All-Pac 10 choice as a senior after going in as one of the favorites for the Dick Butkus Award for college football's top linebacker. The injury factor, an arthritic condition, was compounded by the emotional factor of the death of his mother at age 45, Car- leen, in the spring of '93. Money? That's the furthest thing from Willard's mind at this point. "I'm just glad they're giving me the opportunity to ea rn a spot on their roster. I'm going to be 100 percent (physically) and they're willing to wait for me," explained Willard. "l just want to be a productive player in the NFL." Willard went into the weekend with no illusions. He was well aware many NFL teams didn't like the physical gamble. Kansas City apparently felt the gamble was worth it. Watching the first three rounds on Saturday ~!~cited no disappointment. But' on Sunday the telephone rang. "They gave me u caU and said they were taking me. All 1 could say was 'thanks a lot.' "I'm just glad to get the chance and see where I can take it." An additional bonus with DAlL'f rawT F•u r11010 the Chiefs is the grass turf Jerrott Willard at Arrowhead Stadium, which did not go unnoticed by Willard. Getting picked in April and making the cuts in August are two entirely differenL matters. "I know it doesn't guarantee any- thing," he said. "But it does mean I.hey have quite an interest in me." The interest comes from the obvious, considering Willard's strength, quickness and an intangible called "determination." His honors at Cal go deep, the most notable second team All- American status as a junior when he was one of three juniors in a group of 14 finalists for the Butkus Award. He leaves for Kansas on Thursday. ORANGE COUNTY ALL-STAR BASKETBALL GAMES KATSVYA RAINONE/foll TllE DAIL'f l'ILOT Estancia's Cyndi Richards battles Fountain \<al+ey's Erin Avila for loose ball. A long night's work results in South win ~ Clayton, Richards earn a good night's re st after Rebels prevail in triple-overtime marathon. BY BAJUt.Y FAULKNER, Sro11:n Warrn COSTA MESA After three overtimes, 2~ hours and 14 lead changes, Estancia High sc· nior Cyndi Richards said she was ready to head home and hit the hay, fol- lowing her South squad's 72-69 victory over the North in the girls Orange County All-Star Basketball Game Saturday at Orange Coast College. After Richards hit two free throws to cap the run, and the North answered with two foul shots of its own, Clayton nailed an 18-footer to make it 42-39. But the North ref used to buckle. The North had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed two foul shots with 17 seconds left, then rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first overtime to force a sec- ond extra session, courtesy of two Dinah Shah free throws with no time on the clock. The North surged to a four-point le ad early in the second overtime, but a 19-foot jumper by the South's Kortney Okura with one second left, extended things to an unprecedented th ird five-minute over- time . The North seized a 69-66 lead with 2:51 left in the final bonus period, but Garrett scored the final six points to close it out for the South. The experience, however, was nm one he'll likely savor. "l 've got more questions than answer!.," said Orris, after his underdog Rebels played the patsy for a loaded North unit, 91-74. "Doth of us (Laguna Beach Coach Bret Fleming, who assisted with the South) are used to running a system that's a little more controlled," Orris explained. "J guess the things we teach, you can't put in overnight; things like team defense and pressing. We tried to do some things, but th ey just didn't work." One of the pluses for the South was the post play of 6-foot·S Estancia High senior Kevin Byrne, who battled a forest of tall North trees to post 15 points and nine re- bounds. Byrne, who scored more than 15 point!. only four times in the Eagles' bolanced at· tack during his final prep campaign, hi1 three field goals in the opening 4~ min- utes, tallying six of his te am's first eight points. Byrne, the coaches' Pacific Coast League Co-Pl ayer of the Year, is still hop- ing to get an opportunity to continue play- ing in college. A Clayton loyup with 8:15 left ac· counted for the second and third points of the spurt, and her pau to Jennifer Gar- rett helped extend ll to 7-0, 1Mn1 the South ill first lead sU.cc 6:30 remained bcrorc intcrmlaion. The 46 points scored by each team in regulation was the fewe st in the game's 18·year history, but the South was helped by making 38 of 52 free throws, while the North connected on just 15 of 24 from the line. Marina Hlgh's Shandy Robbins was the MVP, amassing 21 points and 15 re- bounds, contributina grently to five North players fouling out. leuth All·lt•n 71, Nertla All·lten •• SoollJI All·SW.
