A DRESSING DOWN .. ,
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District trustees will discuss a

The districtwide directive
gives guidelines for student

symbols that promote gangs,
drugs, alcohol, denigration and
· vulgarity. ·
Individual schools can add to
the policy to meet personalized
needs.
Also on Monday, trustees will
consider:..
• Recommendations from the
surplus property committee
concerning the 16th Street
administration center and
Eastbluff, Monte Vi sta and
Lindbergh school sites. _
• Crowding in elementary
schools in the Newport Harbor
High area and w:iys to increase
enrollment in elementary
schools in the Estancia High
School area.
•The appointment of a

JUST ASK l\tY DAUGHTER
... If you happen by the
Westin South Coast Plaza on
Thursduy you might notice that
the hired help is, well, a bit on
the youthful side. A mere child
behind the reservation desk? A
young teen lumbering with the
luggage? The girl down the
street doing the housecleaning?
That and more, but worry
not. The child lubor luws have
not been tossed out the
window. The Costa Mesa hotel
is, for the second straight year,
participating in "Take Our
Daughters to Work" day, a
nationwide occasion sponsored
by the Ms. Foundation.
Daughters of hotel
employees, who range in age
from 9 to 15, will assume their
parents' jobs for the day. Even
hotel genernl manager Wayne
Ilodington said he will be
pulling his 10-ycar-old duughter
Susie to work.
Boys, who presumably get to
spend the day at school, will get
a chance to shadow their moms
and dads next fall.

COSTA MESA -City leaders
embraced the news that a major
division of the oil giant Unocal
Corp. may move to Costa Mesa -
bringing hundreds of high-quality
jobs to the county and more than
$2.5 billion a year in sales tax.
Unocal has expressed a desire
to move its Los Angeles c::ompany's
marketing and refining subsidiary,
76 Products Co., to the 12-story
Bank of America building on Bris-
tol near South Coast Plaza.
Considering the financial dire
straits some cities are suffering in
the wake of the Orange County
bankruptcy, Costa Mesa Mayo r

"It's a feather in our cap,"
Erick.son said. "Unocal cun pick
and choose any city it wants to.
With our strong retail base we're
able to have a balanced budget
with low fees and taxes. Huving an
employer like Unocal encouraging
their employees to !.hop in our
stores, eat in our restaurants and
live in our city is great."
The relocation is seen by some
as an-indicator of better thi,ng~ to
come for a· county bogged in bank-

"Orange County is in !.olid
shape from a business standpoint
and will experience economic
growth in the near and far fu ·
ture," said Ed Fawcett, presitlt.:nl
of the Costa Mesa Chamber of
Commerce. "The bankruptcy will
have no impact on that grm\lh."
He echoed Erickson's enthusi-
asm and pruise of Costu Mesa
calling it a city in "very sound fi-

proved, it would serve as an ex·

history
Home once owned by world famous violin virtuoso and
then Ahmanson family is now a $13.6 million mansion
J ascha Heifitz, world famous violin
virtuoso, and his movie actress wife,
Florence Vidor, bought a i.ummer
home on the western end of Harbor
Island in 1938.
An avid sailor, Heifitz sold his Cim
boat, a 68-f oot yawl named the Galatea
to actor Dick Powell, then bought the
70-foot double ender yellow sailboat
Serenade, which he kept in Newport
Harbor.
When the couple divorced, Florence
Vidor Heifitz kept the Harbor Island
home and lived there until after World
War 11. She was active in the local Red
Cross Chapter during the war. Around
1950, she sold the property to Howard
Ahmanson, an Omaha banker, who had
bought Home Savings and Loan
Association in 1947. It was demolished,
and a larger house that became a
landmark in the harbor was built for the
Ahmansons.
Ahmanson was an accomplished
yachtsman \.,,hose sloops Sirius and
Sirius II were familiar !tights in the
harbor. I le and his crew !>Cl records in
the 1964 Acapulco and Mazatlan races.
Howard :ind Dorothy Ahmanson were
well known in Newport Beach society
and were generous philanthropists who
supported the Ahmanson Foundation
for medical research, The Los Angeles
Music Center and the Los Angeles
Museum Art Gallery.
ln 1991, another home built on the
same p:ircel of land that had been split
into two sites, sold for the biggest price
ever paid for an Orange Cou nty home
-S 13.6 million. A far cry from th e
early beach houses and even the elegant
homes that replaced them, this
limestone palace has three stories, eight
bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. However,
the occupants will not hear ghostly violin
music from llcifitz's vunished practice
room in his long-gone beach house. It
was soundproofed.

SPORTS EDITOR ROGER CARLSON, 642-4330, ext. 223
Willard goes in fifth round
~ Kansas City Chiefs draft ex-CdM star in NFL draft.
Introducing Mr. Irrelevant XX
BY ROGER. CAlu.sON, Sroan Eorroa
CORONA DEL MAR -The tone of a telephone ring at the
horn~ of Jerrott Willard never sounded.better Sunday afternoon,
commg in the form of a call from the Kansas City Chiefs who
want him for their football team. ·'
"This is just huge," said Willard. "lt's really where !•wanted to
be. It's ideal."
The former Corona de! Mar High star, wh6 started and ex-
celled with h.onor~ f<?r fo ur ye~rs at the ~niversity of California
at Derkeley 1s rehsh1ng the faith the Chiefs have shown in the
form or a fifth-round draft pick of the 6-foot-2, 235-pound line-
backer at the NFL's 1995 Draft in New York City.
The Chiefs went for Willard despite the fact he was unable to
perform in any of th e "combines" or workouts which dot the pro
scene because of knee injuries which cut his abilites to nearly 50
percent as a senior.
Even hobbled, however, Willard was an All-Pac 10 choice as a
senior after going in as one of the favorites for the Dick Butkus
Award for college football's top linebacker.
The injury factor, an arthritic condition, was compounded by
the emotional factor of the death of his mother at age 45, Car-
leen, in the spring of '93.
Money? That's the furthest thing from Willard's mind at this
point. "I'm just glad they're giving me the opportunity to ea rn a
spot on their roster. I'm going to be 100 percent (physically) and
they're willing to wait for me," explained Willard. "l just want to
be a productive player in the NFL."
Willard went into the
weekend with no illusions.
He was well aware many
NFL teams didn't like the
physical gamble. Kansas
City apparently felt the
gamble was worth it.
Watching the first three
rounds on Saturday ~!~cited
no disappointment. But' on
Sunday the telephone rang.
"They gave me u caU and
said they were taking me.
All 1 could say was 'thanks
a lot.' "I'm just glad to get
the chance and see where I
can take it."
An additional bonus with DAlL'f rawT F•u r11010
the Chiefs is the grass turf Jerrott Willard at Arrowhead Stadium, which did not go unnoticed by Willard.
Getting picked in April and making the cuts in August are two
entirely differenL matters. "I know it doesn't guarantee any-
thing," he said. "But it does mean I.hey have quite an interest in
me."
The interest comes from the obvious, considering Willard's
strength, quickness and an intangible called "determination."
His honors at Cal go deep, the most notable second team All-
American status as a junior when he was one of three juniors in
a group of 14 finalists for the Butkus Award.
He leaves for Kansas on Thursday.

17 seconds left, then rallied from a 5-0
deficit in the first overtime to force a sec-
ond extra session, courtesy of two Dinah
Shah free throws with no time on the
clock.
The North surged to a four-point le ad
early in the second overtime, but a 19-foot
jumper by the South's Kortney Okura
with one second left, extended things to
an unprecedented th ird five-minute over-
time .
The North seized a 69-66 lead with 2:51
left in the final bonus period, but Garrett
scored the final six points to close it out
for the South.

~ South coach discovers painful

are a whole different ballgame.

High Coach Paul Orris received his indoc-
trination to the all-star style of play Satur-
day, leading the Sou th in the 30th boys
Orange County All-Star Basketball Game
Saturday at Oranle Coast College.
The experience, however, was nm one
he'll likely savor.
"l 've got more questions than answer!.,"
said Orris, after his underdog Rebels
played the patsy for a loaded North unit,
91-74.
"Doth of us (Laguna Beach Coach Bret
Fleming, who assisted with the South) are
used to running a system that's a little
more controlled," Orris explained.
"J guess the things we teach, you can't put
in overnight; things like team defense and
pressing. We tried to do some things, but
th ey just didn't work."
One of the pluses for the South was the
post play of 6-foot·S Estancia High senior
Kevin Byrne, who battled a forest of tall
North trees to post 15 points and nine re-
bounds.
Byrne, who scored more than 15 point!.
only four times in the Eagles' bolanced at·
tack during his final prep campaign, hi1
three field goals in the opening 4~ min-
utes, tallying six of his te am's first eight
points.
Byrne, the coaches' Pacific Coast
League Co-Pl ayer of the Year, is still hop-
ing to get an opportunity to continue play-
ing in college.
His tenacity in the paint and on the
boards certainly did nothing to hurt his
chances. He added two steals and one
blocked shot.
Corona del Mar High teammates Brian
Fracalosy and Dominic DcGrazier
chipped in nine and four points, re spec-
tively.
Fracalosy, the Newport-Mesa District
Player of the Year, capped his final prep
outing by sinking a 28-foot three-point
