ALOHA. POG POLICE
The World POG Federa-
tion 's strict enforcement of
its trademark is well-known
to locals. There are plenty of
tales ofWorld POG employ-
ees reprimanding local busi-
ness owne rs for using the
term "POG" illegally.
But we've learned the
Costa Mesa-based Federa-
tion is just as tough on POG
trademark violators in
Hawaii -the birthpldce of
the milkcap craze.
Spotted in a gift shop
recently in La haina, Maui,
was a "cease and desist" le t-
ter from Alan Rypinski,
World POG president. Taped
to a counte r in the island
store , the letter remind ed the
proprie tor that the term
"POG" is a trademark
owned by the Newport
Beach resid ent a nd thus can
not be used without lht> r:t>d -•
eration's consent.

What a surprise, when

OlllEJt 1llAN llfAT, HOW
DID YOU LIKE 1llE PICTIJJl.Ef -
.J.n several lifetimes of plying
this craft, r can't remember when
any of my columns biggered
such a reaction. And, alas, it had
nothing to do with anything I
wrote .
What detonate d the reader-
ship was that sta rtling new mug-
shot, which popped up in
Wednesday's space. A random
sampling of reaction:
• From Kaqtryn MasJowsld of
Corona del Mar: WhiJe bei!rd
and bald head against a w~te
background? Really. lf it hadn't
been for the black rim.med spec-
tacles. I w~uldn't have known
where youif ace ended. Or
maybe that's good ... " ,
• From Richard Bortz of Costa
Mesa: "What happened to the
familiar pipe? I could vaguely
notice that something's protrud-
ing from your facial foliag~. but
can't tell if it's a p anatela agar or
a stick of beef jerky. The opera-
tive word here is 'Jerky."'
• From Richard Edris of Costa
Mesa: uu that's a m eerschaum
calabash, as advertised. the n I'm
a corncob pipe."
Happily, not everyone was
unhappy. From her tube-clut-
tered bed at Hoag Hospital,
where sh e's awaiting a bone-
ma rrow transpla nt, ever-upbedt •
Barbara Aune caUed with these
cheery words: "How nice to pick
up The Daily Pilot this morning
and see your happy face. It made

Thanks, dear Barbara, and
let's iill keep on smiling. Kn ow-

The annual Mussel Quarantine in California
goes into effect today and lasts through Oct. 31.
Sport harvesting of mussels for human con-

"We rolled the dice and let

A • O\>vioUfly, the choices are two
no trump or three hearta. Since you
have already rebid"your hearts
(although th.at. doe.a not promise a
six-card suit in this sequence), we
slightly prefer showing the club
&toJ>W by bidding two no trump.
That will give partner more options
on the third round.
