Goodwin, the 71-year-old Costa
Mesa r~sident whose partner-
swapping parties were profiled in
the Daily Pilot nearly two weeks
ago, has become somewhat of a
local cele brity. :-
Since the article first ran in the
Pilot's April 22-23 weekend issue,
Goodwin has been interviewed
by reporjers from Sftf@tal other
newspapers and from television
news shows on Los · Angeles
channels 2,..4, 7, 9 and 11. And,
his story has been me ntioned on
such Los Angeles radio stations
as KROQ-FM 106.7, STAR-PM
98.7 and XTRA Sports-AM 690.
·1 had TV cameras here com-
ing and going all day yesterday,"
Goodwin said Tuesday. ·
Interest in Goodwin and his
parties -he holds three a month
at his two-story Surf Street home
that he calls the •Panther Palace"
-has even gained national
appeal. On Tuesday, the Daily
Pilot received calls from produc-
ers for the ·Geraldo" show in
New York and from a SeatUe-
based radio station, asking for
information on Goodwin.
But on J\.iesday. Goodwin said
he plans to •1ay low " for a few
days. until he hears from city offi-
cials who have been revie wing
the operations of his parties.
Goodwin accepts donations -
$30 a couple -from his guests.
And Mayor J oe Erickson has
asked that city staff look into
whether Goodwin's Panther
Palace qualifies as a business.
Officials from the city's build-
ing department are also checking
to see if Goodwin obtained prop-
er building permits for various
ad:clitions on his property.

:School property bill approved
• • • NEWPORT-MESA -A bill that
'would allow school d.Jstricts to use
unds from the sale of property fbr
general purposes passed its first
legislative hurdle last month
hen it was unanimously
pproved by the stdte Senate
ducation Committee
The law was suggested in
esponse to the counly bankrupl-
y by Newport-Mesa Unified
chool District Superinte nde nt
ac Bernd and is sponsored by
tate Se ns. William Craven and
ucy Killea. The bill would allow
districts to use money from the
ale of surplus property -proper-
no longer needed as school
ites -for general school opera-
' ons.
Currently, -stale law prevents
e use of !turplu!t property pro-
ceeds for dnythmg but build.Jng
dnd mamtenance.
An amendment lo the ortgmal
legislation requires districts to use
the surplu:s property funds to (irst
replenish money lost to the bank-
ruptcy. Then the property sale
proceeds can be funneled mto the
general fund.
The proposed law could help
Newport-Mesa if the district is
able to sell the Bear Street School
prope rty, which is expected to
bring in at least $4.5 million.
Because the county bankrupt-
cy froze district funds in its invest-
ment pool, Newport-Mesa
trustees had lo cut $3.1 milhon
from next year's op~rating bud-
get. lf the proposed law is,
approved by the slate legislature,
the distnct would be able to u.-.e
money from the sale for general
operations.

GETilNG CLOSER TO THE GOAL
Although McKean will have

"(AIDS) is catastrophic. Raising
the money is an added bonus.•
Even though the AIDS ride will

It's a synonym for gender.
When socializing nowadays, l
still enjoy bussing pretty ladies on

and usually must be followed by
a 20·minute nap. Sometimes
even a cigarette. .
Imagine my surprise then, to l~arn that partner-swapping par-

being staged regularly at a two·

Heck, so would 1. But my invita-

Besides, I'd need to bring

Some me mbers of the local

But Mayor Joe Erickson and
Councilwoman Sandra Genis,

should pay for their fair share of
the improvements and not
expect the taxpayers to shoulder
the cost.

Miller's move to Tustin football job official
•Former Mesa football
coach proud of three-year

proved too strong.
By Barry Faulkner, Staff Writer
The last ddy of what Myron
Miller tem1ed dn dgoni?.ing week
ended Idle Monday when the
Tustin Unified School District
B0<trd approved his hiring as foot-
bdll rodch at Tustin High.
f\ hller. who led the Costa Mesa
High to unprecedented success in
·three years as foo tball coach and
athletic director. aid Tuesday the
redsons behind th<> move were
purely seUish.
#It was a selfish dedslon, and I
make no bones about it,• sold the
51-year-old Costa Mesa resident,
who is looking forward to diaw-
ing athletes from the 1 ,6~5 enroll-
ment at Tustin, nearly double that
of Costa Mesa.
#The extra enrollment is the ·
primary .reason the (Tustin) job
was more attractive to me,• Miller
explained .• #For most of my
coaching career, I've been at
schools with significantly lower
enrollments. N ow, I feel I'm on
more of a level playing field.
Instead of having one good ath-
lete at each position, now there
are two."
Miller introduced himseli to
coach es a nd players at Tustin
Tuesday, but said he will finish
out the year as athletic director at
Mesa, and work with the Costa
Mesa football players, until a suc-
cessor is named.
A teaching and coaching vet-
eraft of more than 25 years, Miller
said he ranks his time at Mesa as
the pinnacle of his career.
"I think I'm the proudest of my
time at Costa Mesa, of any job
I've done,• he said. ·1 won a CIP
tiUe at Ramona, but that had been
a winning program before I got
there. When I got to Costa Mesa,
people told me it was t!lle grave-
yard of coaches. Lots of things
happened, and there were some
terrific kids there, which gave me
a chance to Win. It was a very
exciting time, and I think the
community and the campus ben-
efited.
