the Adopt-An-Acre program .
Since Earth Day was on a·
SaturdaY, the Middle School

third and seventh grades gave
up their lunch to pick up, trash
at Brentwood Park.
Park Private is pleased to
announce that two of our stu-

Youth Expo this year. They are:
De nise Cherry in the Prose ..

Project Division. We are very
proud of these hard-working
students. Join us at the Youth
Expo at the Fairgrounds today,
Saturday and Sunday.
Up and coming in May is
our Open House. It will be held
from 9:30 a .m. to 12:30 p.m. on
May 13. There will be carnival
games, exhibits, open class-
rooms and much more. Come
see our school! ,

May 5 marks the day in 1862
wben Mexican soldiers defeated
Napoleon's advancing troops in
Pueblo. The small band of Mexi-

her~s for standing up to the
strong French forces.
The day is much more of a c~l
ebratton in the l)nited States than
it is in Me~co, said Oscar Santoyo,
director of the Save Our Youth
center in West Side Costa Mesa.
Sept. 16, the day in 1810 when
Mexico declared its independence
from Spain, is more of an event in
Mexico, marked with parades,
carnivals, food and ~es.
"I would say that Cinco de

Santoyo said. "Not that we don't
like it. though. It gives us a good
reason to bring out the chips and

James Moureaux of Newport

ln major upsets Thursday night

remained in disbelief lollowing

DeZahd, Santa Margarita's

Martin Pennel\ led most of µie

But Beardslee used an extraor-

Pennell stepped out of a five-man

him.
DeZabd passed Pennell mid-

• Estancia victim of Mustangs'
purposeful p erformance.
By Barry_ Faulkner. Staff Writer
COSTA MESA -Entering Thursday's
cross-town softball showdown with host
Estancia High, just three games remained
in the final regular season for five 'Costa
Mesa High senior starters.
And, judging irom the Mustangs' 15-2,
mercy-rule shortened, five-inping triumph,
it's safe to say the sense of urgency has set
in for Coach Rick Buonarigo's players -
regardless of their class.
uThey just refocused," said Buonarigo of
his team's rebound from Tuesday's disap-
pointing Pacific Coast League loss to Aliso
Niguel. •Our $JOal at the beginning of the
season was to win. leaglie, but now we're
just concentrating on cllnching a playoff
spot." •
The Mustangs (16-6, 6-2 in league) could
do just that Tuesday with a win over Uni-
versity, but a share of the PCL title is a long
shot, with La~una Hills heading into the
final week with a two-qame lead. -
The Mustangs, however, can earn their
highest finish in 17 seasons by topping Uni-
versity and/or Thursday's opponent, Lagu-
na Hills, en route to their third straight ClP
playoff appearance.
"This is our year," acknowledged
Buonarigo, who benefited from nine hits
and eight runs from his determined seniors,
though freshman Julie Collett may have
had the most productive offensive perfor-
mance.
Collett's grand slam highlighted a seven-
run second inning; rounding out her 2-for-4,
four-RB.I day, which also included three
stolen bases and two runs.
Senior outfielder Melissa McDaniel bad
three RBI singles, while senior Sarah
Halverson (three bits and a run), senior Sara
Snyder (a solo homer, a triple and three
runs) and junior Nicola Woody (a triple, sin-
gle and three runs) also paced the winners.
Though 1u~t 16, the Costa
Mesa resident pounded 14 kills
with a lone hitting error in last
summer's Festival championship
match, ~hich proved to be a
tuneup for her,.548 kills, 302 dtgs,

Jennifer Brunick, who took over for
Estancia starter Jill Black, after Black expe-
rienced Pa.41 in her throwing shoukler dur-

Estancia hits.

Corona del Mar High senior
distance sensation Tracy Clark
blew away two fields with her
titles in the 1600 and 3200
meters, Newport Harbor's

places, and Sailor high jumper
Tina Bowman won her third
career league title in four years,
as area girls made a huge state-
ment in the Sea View track and
fi eld finals Thursday night at
Irvine High.
Not winning individual titles
but making big impressions were
Newport Harbor freshman Jamie
Swarberg and Sailor sophomore
M.E. Clayton. the latter of whom
had a personal best in three
events, qualifying for the ClP
Southern Section Division Il pre-
liminaries (May 13 at UC River-

Swarberg had runner-up fin-
ishes in the 800 (2:23.3) and 1600
(5:19.88), then anchored Newport
Ha1bor's third-place 1600 relel¥

Oayton qualified No. 2 in the
long jwnp (17-13/4) and 100 high

· in the triple jump (34-81/2), but
did not qualify.
Newport • Harbor senior
Mandy Clayton, who hadn,'t
practiced this week because of

biple jwnp (35-7112).
NShe should be a lot healthier

Sophomore Colleen Eadie of
Newport Harbor had a big run in
the 800 (2:23.43) to qualify No. 3,
while CdM's 400 relay team
(Ch ristina Walden. Jennifer
Gardner, Margaret Hauk and
Nicole Albano) finished third in
52.4.
Newport Harbor's Cara
Heads, Lia Roussel and Laura
Wilson, however, captured most
of the attention.
Heads recorded a personal
best to win the discus (140-7) by
nearly 22 feet on her final throw,
while Wilson's personal-record
38-9 in the shot put gave the
Sailors two champions in the
weights.
Roussel was second in the shot
put (PR 38-5), third in the discus
(115-6).
Heads qualified third in the
shot put (35-111/2), wblle Wilson
was second in the discus (118-9).
•1 was hoping if I won (the dis-

After her victory in the shot

the ring, hitting 40 feet consis-

win, but it's frustrating knowing I
can hlt over 40 feet on a bunch o1
