BREW PlENTY Of COfffE FOR THIS ONE Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustees may break their self-imposed 11 p .m. curfew Tuesday night as they meet to consider a new investment policy, among oth- er items on a heavy agenda. The board will also: • Hear about plans for a three-way agreement involv- ing the district , the city of Costa Mesa and the Orange County Fairgrounds to build a sports complex al the former Costa Mesa High School farm. • Possibly Issue lay-off notices to 12 classified employees because of budget cuts or lack of work available. • Consider six district prop- erties to determine which should be declared surplus. • Consider a districtwide dress code policy. The Newport-Mesa board of trustees meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th Street, Costa Mesa. For more information, call the dis- trict at 760-3497. BICYCLE BANTER We understand Newport Beach Public Works Director Don Webb received a lot of ribbing around City Hall due to an error in a photo caption on the front page of Friday's Daily Ptlot. The photograph showed Newport Beach city employees riding their bicy- cles down by the beach in honor of Bike to Work Day. For the record, Webb wasn't in the picture. The man pictured, and identified as Webb, was associate civil engineer Jim Brahler. The biggest laugh around Oty Hall, though, stemmed from the fact that HWebb " -the department head who encouraged many employees to cycle-commute to work -was Npictured" sans bicycle helmet while riding. CONGRATS Attorney and television/ ' radio host Hugh Hewitt has been named to the South st Air Quality Manage- m nt District board. Gov. P~e Wilson appointro ttie 39-year-old Newport Beach resident to the non-paying position. The Friday press release announc- ing Hewitt's appoinbnent touts his nearly six years as a • member of the Reagan Administration's legal team; his stint as founding director of the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Lin· da; and his "extensive experi- ence in air quality law and regulation." Oh, and of course Hewitt's media credits -he co-hosts the PBS show "Life and Tunes" and a weekly KFI radio show on politics and free-market econolIJ.ics -are also duly noted. One minor catch: Hewitt's appointment still needs the state Senate's con· rtrmation.
