What better way to spark interest in a local event than to invite a celebrity guest? And nobody can accuse the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce of aiming low. Chamber President Toni Van Schultze fired off a letter to the White House request- ing that President Clinton "fire the starting gun" to kick off the Corona del Mar Scenic SK race on June 3. "He's a runner," chamber board member Charlie Gab~ bard said of the President. "We figured that after Wash- ington D.C., Corona del Mar would be a piece of cake for him." White House staff told Gabbard that Clinton takes every opportunity to mix with members of the public, but they would not give a yay 01:.a nay to the chamber's invite. U Clinton chooses, he'll simply show up, entourage and secret service in tow. Should make for interest- ing parking tie-ups. DON'T WEIGHT FOR THE WEDDING The Bri~e in Newport Cen- ter was in a flurry of television activity Thursday when the Oprah Winfrey show came to film a segment in the bridal shop. The Chicago-based talk show chose a Mission Viejo bride, Heidi Stumbaugh, to follow as she prepares for h er upcoming wedding -and her preparations include try- ing to lose some weight. So Thursday morning, before the shop's usual 11 a.m . opening time, the three- person crew (a producer, a sound technician and a cam· era operator) came in and filmed Stumbaugh being fit- ted in her wedding gown. "They were so nice," said Carolyn Young, co-owner of The Bride with Gwen Jordan. "The bride is adorable. She 's got a terrific sense of humor. "It was easy." And the national exposure sure won't hurt the store. The show, which will also feature other brides in a "spring training" exercise program with Oprah. airs Wednesday. "We sell a lot of them - it's a popular bridal shower gift," said Karen Stephen, the store manager. But men actually buy them too, says Stephen, who claims "lots" of male customers have come into her store for the $9.99 item. By the way, the Wonder Jock is available in two prints and four colors. By Julie Ross Cannon. Staff Writer W. en Brad Bogart and his family moved into an older home in Canyon Park, he knew he had bought a "fixer-lipper." But the price was right and the neighborhood was quiet, so he grabbed a paintbrush and went to work. Four years later, Bogart is · helping clean up his west-side neighborhood and hoping lo change its image. More than 40 concer:ned community members pitched in Saturday to renovate the exterior of four highly visible neighborhood homes that had fallen into neglect. The work- ers spent eight hours painting. building fences, cleaning debris and replacing glass windows. H Just looking at what we accomplished -turning four homes which were basically eyesores into beautiful homes -it's obviously worth it,~ Bogart said. Bogart was part of an eight- member committee that met once a week for five months planning Saturday's outing. The committee selected four homes it believed needed the most work. "It helps motivate other people," Bogart said. He hopes the work will motivate other homeowners to take bet- ter care of the neighborhood. "They'll see these make- overs, and they'll want to clean up their own homes.· "The little things we can do to demonstrate our enthusi- asm with the neighborhood might encourage others to take more }¥ide m their homes," said neighbor Jeff Williams, who also worked with the project. "The neighborhood is headed in the right direction. Young couples are moving in and care about the neighbor- hood's appearance,· Williams said. "We hope we can create a better image for the west side of Costa Mesa." Williams said he was pleased with the group's fund- raisrng efforts. The neighbor- hood raised $2,500 for the pro- ject from ticket sales to a home and garden tour last year. Bank of Amenca and Uruon Bank chipped in anoth- er $200, raising their cash totdl to $2,700. Local businesses donated many of the clearung items, including pcllilt. lumber dumpsters. plants dnd shrub Williams said the day will become an annual event. John Forstrom, Staff Writer I f you are still fuming about the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City and you can't seem to rid yourself of the anger, Paul Dunn thinks he has the answer. Dunn -a former police offi- cer in San Diego who boasts a doctorate in human behavior from Newport University, a cor· respondence institute -has designed an audience partici· patory program he has titled "Sociodrarna: The Oklahoma Federal Building Bombing.• In his free, two-hour role- playing session scheduled Sat- urday at Jorgensen Center in Newport Beach. audience members will act out a series of events -including the imagi- nary bombing of the Federal Building dnd execution of the convicted terrorists -in an attempt to release any negative feelings that they might have suppressed. .. "It's fantasy representation. it's fiction and factual," said the 66-yeM-old rellred socio-and· lyst who lives in Santa Ana. "Everybody has been affect- ed in one way or another. ' WATER CONTINUED FROM 1 1985, the agency that oversees the groundwater supply contends it is dropping rates this year. The Orange County Water District board of directors recent- ly approved a water fee for next year that is 3.5% less than last year's cost, according to that agency's Qffidals. The drop is due in part to increased storm waters captured this year along the San- ta Ana River, according to an OCWD press release. Costa Mesa resident Heather Somers, doesn't see why the dis- trict doesn't go shopping for a cheaper, smaller imported water supplier that doesn't have all the costs inherent in a large company such as Metropolitan. "Don't we have a choice of who we purchase fromr said Somers, who attended Thursday's public hearing and has been studying the issue. "It's totally infuriating because theoretically we have a board (of directors) to buy the best water possible at the lowest rates." According to the budget, the district plans to buy less from Coastal Wate'r District and 800 acre feet more .from Metropolitan in 1995-96. ~ Somers is incensed that the district is not seizing an opportu- nity to buy water from a cheaper supplier such as Coastal -who she said is not "top heavy" with administration and lobbying costs like Metropolitan. • But' Urashima said there a.re lunitations in the district's physi- cal connections, and Metropolitan offers more accessible connec- tions, plus seasonal money-sav- ing incentives. She said the dis- trict welcomes residents' ques-· t10ns and comments on rate increase issues. By Richard Dunn, Staff Writer NORWALK -Jumping for rebounds, or taking an outside shot, requires an entirely differ- ent spring. Some weeks, even months, are mandatory for senior Mandy Clayton of Newport Harbor High to successfully make the transition from bas- ketball to track and field, in which the triple jump has become her best sport. Clayton, an AJJ-CIF second- team selection last season on Coach Shannon Jakosky's cele- brated girls basketball team, advanced to the CIF Masters Meet in the triple jump, after setting ye t another personal and school standard . "lt's the weirdest sport," Clayton said of the triple jump, "it goes against all logic. But for some reason, I just clicked with it." Clayton indeed clicked on Saturday in tbe CIF Southern the regular season in 'the long jwnp and hurdles. "1 w~n't going to run track. I was gomg to play softball.• As soon as Sailor .hurdles and trip.h! jump coach Nowell Kay saw what Clayton could do, it put a quick end to the softball thinking. Last year, Clayton, beaded for Stanford, did not get out of the CIF Division ll preliminar- ies. Basketball season had last· ed until late March, as Clayton helped lead the Sailors to berths in the CIF and Southern California Regional finals. Mlt takes me a long time to get in shape for the triple jump alter basketball," she said. "Usually; it's a month or so. But this year 1 also came out late (after Newport Harbor reached the CIF semifinals), then I got bronchitis, then I got over that. I always knew I could do it. I'm really excited." ln her first attempt Saturday, Clayton broke the school record for the fifth time in her career. She broke it a sixth time in her second bound. Late in the track season as a sophomore, including two Sea View League dual meets, Clay- ton established school triple· jump records three weeks in a row. Section Division Il finals at Cerri- tos ·college, where the New- port Harbor school record- holder entered with a personal best of 36-41/2. "It's the weirdest sport ... it goes against all logic. " But to do it all in one meet, espe- cially in one with such s ignifi- cance, must rank among I -MANDY CLAYTON Each time, of course, Clayton reaches a pe rsonal record, it's also anothe r school record. In four jumps, she topped her meet-entering best four times, going 36-103/4, 37-9 (current school record). 36-63/4 and 36-61/2. She finished third in Division U, and qualified No. 6 for Fri- day's Masters Meet at Cerritos College, a Southern Section combined (state-qualifying) meet, where the top five places in each event advance to the stale meet. For Clayton. who was fifth in the triple jump in "the CIF Di vi· sion II finals as a sop~omore, it's her inaugural trip to the Mas- ters. "They started me in the triple jump during the middle of my freshman year,• said Clay- ton, who also competes during the all-time greatest track and field efforts in Newport Harbor's history. .;I didn't expect her to go 37- 9, • Kay said. "I thought maybe she could go 37 feet. Now, I think she can go 38 feet next (Friday); that'll get her into state. It's great to see that for such a great pe rson." . "I guess there's another goal to be set,· Clayton said. Clayton and Kay worke'd out throughout the week at UC Irvine to try and improve her approach. "Ra ther than just stand and take a step backward (before sprinting <:town the run- way), I take three jog steps,· she said. Clayton now hopes lo jog he r way into the CIF State Championships, which begin June 2. Vanguards third in softball at NAIA National tourney COLUMBIA, Mo. ·The South- ern California College softball team made a strong bid for the NAIA national title last weekend, but bad to settle for a third·place finish on Saturday. sec won its first three games of the rain-del{lyed tournament . ~n Friday, but beg1tn Saturday with a 4-0 losS'lo Oklahoma City, the eventual champion. Then, in an elimination game against Puget Sound, sec came out on the short end of a 4-3 ver- dict. sec, which had defeated Puget Sound 3-1 in a late game Friday, took a 1-0 lead on Satur· day against the Loggers on Jen Caruso's sacrifice fly in the top or the first inning. But Puget Sound (30-11), scored three runs in the bottom of ~e inning against three different sec hurlers. The Vanguards, who finished the season at 44-22, managed to get even at 3-3 in the fourth, but Puget Sound scored the go-ahead run on Heather Paulsen's RBI-sin· gle. For SCC, Shannon O'Rourke, Amy Lewis, Gretchen Brandt and pitcher Shannon Saylor earned all-tournament honors. ,, Clark wraps up . • • nnpress1ve career • Nine area athletes fall short of qualifying for Masters Meet. By Richard Dunn, Staff Wdter NORWALK -For six laps, Corot\a del Mar High senior lra- cy Clark ran with the best in any division in the CIF Southern Sec- tion But a funny thing happened on the way to the finish line: Nothing was left in the fuel tank. "She had to gamble and be real aggressive," Cd.M track and field coach BW Sumner said. "She had to go out and ·try to break 11 minutes (in the 3,200 meters) to qualify for the Masters Meet.• Clark ended a sensational prep career Saturday in the CIF Division Il finals at Cerritos Col- lege, posting a time of 11:15.16, finishing fifth in the division's 3,200 final. She was among nine area ath- letes who competed in the divi- sional finals, but came up short in qualifying £or the Masters Meet. Clark's first five splits were 1:20, 2:40, 4:04, 5:25 and 6:48. She led the rdce until the last tum in the sixth lap, when Temescal Canyon's Ellen Muench (10:58.36) caught her, eventually passing Clark beginrung the sev- enth lap. "(Clark) was on a pace to break 11 minutes for the first six laps, then boom, she just lost it,· Sumner said. "She doesn't have the great leg speed and big kick like some of the other girls, but SUNDAY'S COUNTS she did a good job.· Clark, 6eaded for UCLA, could one day become ao excellent marathon or lOk runner. Other area girls who competed include Newport Harbor fresh - man Jamie Swarberg, seventh in the Division ll 1,600 (5:23.13)1 Sailor s.ophomore M.E. Clayton, eighth in the 100 high hurdles (personal-best 15.97); and junior Laura Wilson, third ln the shot put (37-10) for Newport Harbor, who missed qualifying by one place. Newport Harbor junior Lia Roussel finished the discus with a 114-4 throw. In boys competition, Mater Dei junior Matt Wickersham, a Coro- na del Mar resident, was second in the Division Il 3,200 (personal- best 9:29.53) and fourth in the 1,600 (4 :25.58). "Running with the top guys in the state, it forces you to go faster," Wickersham said . Also in the 1,600, Newport Harbor senior Shahram DeZahd was eighth in 4:29.26. In the Division UI 3,200, Estancia senior Johann Appell finished fourth in 9:30.93. In the Division lI1 100 , Estancia's Chris Felix was ninth (11.08). "That was a tough race, H Felix said. ~u was the best I've been in all year. I had a good start, and I thought I did prelty well. But it was really hard, man. MONDAY, MAY 21, 1995 Heads finishes Second in discus By Richard Dunn, Staff Wflter NORWALK -Newport Harbor High throwing and weight-condi- tioning coach Tony Ciarelli sees it as a high-wire act with hungry lions waiting below. Senior Cara Heads sees it as another opportunity to reach 140 feet in the girls discus. Either way, it's the old postsea- son track and field cliche; it's bet- ter to qualify with a lower mark, than not advance with a personal record. Heads, whose personal-best of 140-7 is the top mark in Orange County this season, finished sec- ond in the discus (129-8) Saturday in the CIF Southern Sect.Jon Divi- sion ll finals at Cerritos College, qualifying sixth for the Masters Meet on Friday. Heads reached 140 feet on her second attempt, but fouled while falling out of the nng. "l just kept going," she said. "I guess I didn't block enough, and I we nt past 1t." Heads entered the finals with a qualifying mark of 130-0, dfter reachin~ 140-7 in the Sea View League finals. The ninth and final quaillymg mark for the Masters was 128-5 The No. 5 mark was 129-10. The top five finishers rn edch event will advance to the state meet June 2. "I'm pretty sure I can make (135 feet)," Heads said, "unless I forget bow to throw or something, and that won't happe'Q. • Ciarelli, 4 veteran of postsea- son disc~ and shot put competi- tions, realizes that most throwers reach their personal best late in the year. "lt's the big show,• Ciarelli sald of the Masters Meet, "but it's like those dance marathons you see ... toward the end, there aren't too many couples standing. Cara bas got to do what she's capable of doing to advance." Though it wasn't her personal best, Heads wasn't complaining. "I'll take 1t, • she said of advancing. "I want to keep going to the state meet. I'd say 140 feet would do it. "(Advancing) was easier than I thought, because I bad envi- sioned the CIF finals being so tough. I guess I didn't believe what Coach CiareW kept telling me, that I would be right there.• Each discus thrower in the Maste rs Meet will get four attempts.
