The death of Me~e R at the

NEWPORT BEACH -Environ-

the preservation of an offshore oil

Since a congressional appro-

said Newport Beach City Manag-

its Superior Avenue plant nearly
in half this summer, with 300 lay-
offs planned for its microelectron-

About 295 employees will be

laid off from a Hughes operation

The second and final round of
notices will go out to those direct-

the end of July.

Even though the layoffs will
drasticdlly reduce the employee
population m Newport Beach ,
Dore said it is unlikely that the
company will close the plant.
He said the Superior Avenue
site will focus its attention on the
newer and more efficient multi-

used in newer radar systems.

By Tina Borgatta, Staff W11ter
COSTA MESA -When offi-
cials from the Toshiba Senior
PGA Goll Classic announced last
year that the Mesa Verde Country
Club would be the site for its
inaugural tournament held this
past March, city officials and the
local business community were
hoping it would be the start of a
long and happy relationship.
So when the news hit the street
that the tournament may hit the .
road next year, disappointment
set in.
This year's event captured
widespread support from d ty offi-
cials, residents and members of
the local business community
who said the tournament could
put Costa Mesa on the map as a
destination. And, they said the
many spectators coming through
the aty -eating in restaurants,
staying in hotels and shopping at

ly drop a hefty sum in sales tax

However, according to
sources, concerns about parking
arrangements and site fees were
among the reasons tournament
officials decided to scout alterna-

DUI ARRESTS
Local women have earned $37 ,000 ,in the six Y8&rfi

By Jennif er D' Andrea,
Special to the Daily Pilot
L ooking for a way lo make your
money grow without heading out
to Vegas to risk it all in a card
game with h,igh stakes?
That's exactly what a group of loca..l
women were looking for when they
founded their own investrnenl club as a
fun way to keep in touch with friends
while making money.
The founder of the club, Costa Mesa
resident Camille Politte, gathered 12 of
her comrades together in 1987, after
she read an article in Working Woman
magazine titled "The Club That Makes
Money." The story piqued her curiosity
about investing a pool of money to buy
stock, without a broker's help.
Politte obtained information from the
National Association of Investment
Clubs, a Detroit-based organization that
offers guides and manuals to both
experienced and inexperienced ,
investors and step -by-step advice on
how to successfully organize and run
an investment club.
Armed with this information. Politte
and her best friend and co-founder
Cathie Murphy teamed up with their
friends and spent one year learning and
practicing their skills without actually
buying any stocks.
After that initial year, the group of
friends named itself the Orange County
Investment Oub and began collecting $25
from each member every month to invest.
"Our membership's been really con-
stant, with only about a one-person-a-
year turnover. Most of the core group is
involved and that helps."
As a result of their prudent invest-
ment choices, the club has currently
accumulated $37 ,000 in stocks and cash
after investing for only six years, Politte
said.
Group membership is loosely limited
to 13 members, so that efficiency can
be maintained, Politte said.
According to Politte, each of the 13
members has a different area of knowl-
edge and experience that is an impor-
tant contribution to the group's deci-
sion-making efforts. Even the m embers'
ages, ranging from 30 to 65, helps con-
tribute to the greup's pool of ever-
important knowledge about An}erican
companies and the world economy.
"We try to find people with different
backgrounds because_ it's really useful
to have people from all different walks
of life," Politte said. "We have some
who are professionals, some who are
retired, and so{lle who have kids.
"But all of us share the desire to
invest our savings as wisely as possible The following people were arrested
recently on suspicion of driving under the
influence. These people have only been
arrested on suspicion of a crime and, as
with all such crimes. they are innocent
until proven guilty.

"None of us knew anything (about
investing) when we first started the
club," said founding member Linda
Sirnos. "We started at ground zero. H
The women, most or whom balance
a career with family life, are involved
with the club to make a little extra
money with the added bonus of enjoy-
and as intelligently as we•can so we
can earn money for ourselves in the
future."
I n order to ensure that each club
member contributes equally to the
group's goals and to eliminate the
possibility of having •freeloaders," each
person is in charge of monitoring the
fluctuations of a particular company in
which the group owns stock .

A couple cooking breakfast in the

ly Tuesday morning.
Costa Mesa firefighters received a call
at 7:18 a.m. from Scott Garmon. who told
them he and his wife smelled smoke in
their one-story home at 3220 Iowa St.,
according to Costa Mesa Fire Battalion
Chief Ken Soltis.
When the electricity went out. Garmon
told firefighters he went outside to the cir-

which immediately "popped off" again,
Soltis said. lt was then that the couple
noticed a burning smell.
When the 17 firefighters anived at the
resid~nce, smoke was billowing out of the
attic, but there were no flames, Soltis said.
He added that it took firefighters nearly 20
minutes to pin down the actual source of
the smoke.
"U it was actually bwning we would
have found it sooner,· he said.
After dousing the smoke, firefighters
were able to determine a short in the electri-

Around $7,000 in damage was done to
the propert1, according to Soltis. Firefight-
ers had to cut a hole in the attic and in the
side of the house to finally reach the source
of the fire and extinguish it. he said.

On Monday, several of Perrier's

Tuesday, as Ferrier began his

the 1979 rape.
According to Femer's testimo-
ny, he never raped the woman.
He testified that he visited her
home twice to lie on her bed and
watch her; then, on a third visit,
he walked into her room naked,
to
have sex with him. But the
woman woke up and screamed
and he baeked off, scared, and
fled, Ferner testified.
Later, after he was arrested, bis
attorney at the time told him to
plead •gunty• to tbe ·rape in order
to get treatment for his sexual
addiction problem at a state hos-
pital, Perrier said.
Robert Flores De Apodaca,
who has a doctorate in psycholo-
gy and is a tenured professor at
Cal State Long Beach, testified as
an expert witness for the defense
Tuesday morning. ~
Flores said there is "little to no
doubt" Ferrier is classified as a
voyeur or •peeping Tom• -a
behavior which can escalate over
time. Flores said Fenier's history
does not fit the characteristics of a
rapist who is motivated by •dom-
inance, resentment or rage."
The motivation of a voyeur is
"seeking affection, approval, and
even love" from women, Flores
said.
But under cross-examination
by the prosecuting attorney,
Deputy District Attorney William
Peccia, Flores also said voyeurs'
behavior can escalate to commit-
ting rape.

NEWPORT BEACH · Sam
Olson, who created one of the top
junior tennis programs in South-
ern California at the Balboa Bay
Club Racquet Club, has been
named the club's general manag-
er, following confirmation Tues-
day.
Olson, who has been at BBC
Racquet Club for seven years,
replaces Henry Hitchcock as the
tennis club's chief. Hitchcock was
reassigned within the BBC
framework in April.
Sarah Fletcher, who has assist-
ed Olson in the club's highly suc-
cessful junior program and acted
as interim director of tennis for
the past six months, will assume
the role of tennis director.
Among the immediate
changes for the club under Olson,
34, will be to promote BBC Rac-
quet Club, assist its members m a
more exclusive manner, attempt
to build a stronger membersh.Jp
base, orchestrate better matches,
create more activities and devel-
op more programs for adults.
"We're going to really work
hard on maJcjng this successful
for adults, as well as Juniors,•
Olson said. "One of my goals for
this club is to mdke 1t the most
active club in Southern Cah.for-

after Palisades Tennis Club mag-
