BECKY'S BACK
Becky the buffalo rehJlned
to the Orange County Fair-
grounds last week, sent home
from a breeding farm where
she apparently refused to
cooperate. .
The media darling of a
bison, as you recall, was pw-
chased by the Orange County
Fair in February 1994. Fair
officials saved her as she
faced eviction from her prior
-home -land that was need-
ed for the San Joaquin Hills
toll road construction.
Becky went on to give
birth to an BO-pound calf last
year, on May 11, 1994. This
past February, fair officials
thought she was ready for
pregnancy again and sent her
to a Paso Robles.ranch to try
to mate her.
• But the 8-year-olcj Becky
repeatedly rebuffed male 'suit·
ors at the breedin'g ranch. So
she returned home to the fair-
grounds last Thursday, in time
to greet visitors to this year's
fair, which begins Friday.
Becky's slngle days may
still be numbered. Fair offi-
cials report that after the fair's
17-day nm. they'll try breed-
ing her again.

are reveling beneath sunny skies

reporting a virtual absence of

Dieting takes sugar
spice out of life
~
at happens when a man on a salt-
free diet falls desperately in love
with a woman on a sugar-free diet?
Can their passion survive their dietary
restrictions? While a male is capable of
devouring a woman with his eyes, it still
doesn't sati.Sfy his craving for sweets. As for
the lady, an unseasoned, salt-free love affair
is too bland to last.
As we age. diets control our Westyles.
Salt-free militants will lecture anyone close
enough to shake a salt shaker that sodium
will raise your blood pressure ~rd kill you
quicker than liquor. Sugar-free dieters will
list the sins of while sugar and the high mor-
tality of candy bar munchers.
After 60 everyone is subjected to their
doctor's dietary lut list. No fat, no alcohol, no
desserts, sex or spicy foods. One has to bar-.
gain with their doctor for every pleasure,
swapping dry martinis for sex and spicy
foods fot'desserts.
George Washington with his peers on the sand ln a Corona del Mar Mount Rushnu~re ln 1976. J
Vegetarians dfe probably the most rnilitftnt
dieters. It's always my luck to be sitting next
to a pious veggie muncher al a dlnner party
when I'm relishing something as barbanc
and delicious as spare ribs.
They grimace as if being a carnivore was
contagious. However, I grant you vegetarians
are less beastly.
liie most populdT diet in America is count-
ing calories. There dre more weight loss pro-
grams for losing your hips than all the diets
put together. The simplest and least popular
diet is to stop gorgmg.
Aside from the usual restrictions of aging,
there are dozens of special diets for a variety
of ailments and allergies. One woman I know
breaks out in a rash when she eats ice cream.
Why couldn't it been turnips? Another fnend
has nugraines whenever he eats hamburgers.
Dinner parties are a challenge inilllgenu-
ity. One has to remember who can't tolerate
chicken, who has an allergy to broccoll, and
whose liv.er is still good enough for a high-
ball. One diet we could all use is food for
thought, or brain supplements.
I wish they came m time-released cdp-
sules George Washington with his troops on the East Coast ln 1776.

Celebrating from sea to shining sea
I n 1776~l~e founding fathers bad their hands full with
the unnlly, un-united and unorganized 13 colonies
they were trying to mold into a united nation. They
were certainly unaware that also in 1776, the Fr~ciscan
fathers of the San Juan Capistrano mission began to visit
the area around Newport Bay, to convert to Christianity
the native Am~ricans living in 'small villages around the
bay, and to graze cattle by the sprawling bed of the San-
ta Ana River.
In 1876, the United States was still rebuilding after a
bitter Civil War. Pioneers were coming west in great
numbers, some had made it all the way to the California
coast to a place newly named "Newport," and to fertile
farmlands inland near the adobe way staticm the Francis-
can fathers had built near an ancient native American
village site.
In 1976, the land was lit by fireworks, celebrated with
American flags by the thousands, parades, wagon trams.
even fire hydrants painted to look like soldiers. On the
beaches of southern California, a whote._settled continent
away from the 13 upstart colonies that started the whole
thing, Americans celebrated.

Other pitching candidates include
Bcett Via and Adam Beltran, the son or
the manager, each or'which have the"
potential to finish games.
"When we were there picking the kids
(for the all-star team), I kttew we would-
n't be in trouble pitching-wise," said Bel-
tran. "All of them know where the strike
zone is."
0ffenshfely, Costa Mesa bas some

"We have a lot of kids who play con-

my strategy. We want to make contact
and move the runners around."
One of the smallest players on the

"He's a very good hitter, and poten-

Among the candidates .for the middle
of the order are Matt Cachola from the
Dodgers, J onathan Clements from the
Cubs and Alex Scurr from the Major
Giants.
Behind the plate, Clements and Rizal
McGee from the Dodgers will vie for
playing time.
"Both have good arms, and Jonathari
has impressed me with his beads-up
knowledge of the game," said Beltran.
"Rizal has pol!;mtial, as well. ff
Defensively, Beltran says he is blessed
"with a bunch of vacuum cleaners."
