Newport falls in eight innings~ 10-9
• Cohen's Bronco team must do it the
hard way with eliminatio!1 game today
at 5:15 against Del Obispp of Dana Hills.
By Roger Carlson, Sports Editor
COSTA MESA · They did just about all
one could ask for -from rallying·from a 5-
0,first inning deficit to actually putting the
winning touch Of\ Pow..e ~late in the bot-
tom of the sixth, only to see it shoved
aside by an umpire who was apparently
watching the tag and not the winning
touch. ·
.ln the end the Newport Harbor Base-
ball Association entry in the Bronco Divi-. .
sion of Pony League dropped a 10-9 Dis-
trict Ill decision in eight innings to Los
Alamitos Tuesday, afternoon at Kaiser
Elementary, sending Newport into
today's 5:15 elimination round game
against Del Ob.ispo of Dana Point at the
same site. The Dana Point entry dropped
a 4-3 decision to No. 1 seed Whittier in
Tuesday's opener.
•Tuey fought all the way through,~
said Newport Manager Paul Cohen in the
aftermath of the three how, 15-minute
contest.
Cohen is hopeful his team can shake
off the effects of the loss. which was a bit-
ter pill to swallow in light of a standou_t
rallying-effort after digging the big· hole
early.
He has three options on the mound -
Blake Tippett, Cody Forsythe or Garrett
Brant, but the big key may be 'the ability
of Newport to bounce back after seeing a
victory virtually snatched away by the
fates.
The umpire. however, ol11y saw the
catcher's tag and called him ouL All
Coh.en could do was wave h.ts arms. grab
his heacj and moon. The deed was done.
Moments later Lus Alan11tos pitcher
Eddie Wertenbroek got the Uurd out on a
strikeout and the game moved into the
seventh.
The re were many such ~rate mon1f'nts•
for ~e,vport, but the one which sticks out ·
like a sore thumb was the sixth-inning
play at the pldte when Chris Mande nno
lined a shot over third with runners at
second and Uurd and one out
Tippett, who had walked, breezed
home for the tying run (9-9). but Forsythe.
coming from second, was ruled out at the
plate despite spinning around the catcher
as he slid in, and tapping the plate with
his hand well ahead of the tag.
At the time 11 seemed JUSt one of sev-
eral tough breaks against the Newport
squad, but 1n the dftermaUi t.lus was the
play that Cohen found most dllfitult to
swallow. His team outhit Los Al. 12·8, and
every spot in lhe lineup had at least ·one
hit. •
