NEWPORT BEACH -For 1,808 area teen-agers, this
was a short, short summer.
Just six days after the 1994-95 school year ended, sum-

books, sharpened their pencils and filed back into the
classrooms at Newport Harbor High School last week.

COSTA tvfESA -One year after
getting the green light, the Auto Club
is ready to roll with the first phase of
an expansion plan that could, in time,
nearly double the size of its Costa
Mesa processing center.
Auto Club officials turned over the
first shovel of dirt on Thursday
'evening during a groundbreaking
ceremony, kicking off a construction
project that will add 250,000 square
feet to its existing facility at 3333
Fairview Road.
The new four-story addition will
continue with the same architectural
style as the existing 460,000-square-
foot processing center, with a mirrored
glass and concrete exterior. !
Inside, the company plans to show
off a small collection of antique cars.
·There will be an entry pavilllon
with Coor-to-ceiling glass, and m 1t
will be some mterestmg things,• said
Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.
"We'll be displaying some of our Vlil-
tage cars, mdudmg a 1928 Dodge and
d 1929 Ford And we have a Harley-
Davidson three-wheel motorcycle."
Construction should be completed
some time in the fall of next year.
The expanded facility will serve as
the headqudrters for the company's
administrative operations, Spring said.
"Rigtlt n'ow, we've got administra-
tive functions that are geographically -
dispersed,· Spring said "So we will
consolidate those functions once tlus

reduce our operations costs And ulti-
mately, those savings will be pdSSed

• Newport East Majors run into a
firestorm, come out a 15-2 loser in
just 3 1/2 innings Thursday.
By Dennis Brosterhous, Staff Writer
ALISO VIEJO -It's not easy to paint a
pretty picture when you're team nas just-
absorbed a 13-run defeat.
But that's what Newport East Little
league Majors All-Stars Manager Teny
Hackett attempted to do after a 15-2 loss to
Laguna Niguel in the first round of the Dis-.
trict 55 Tournament at Woodfield Park.
#We got beat by a pretty good ballclub,"
he said after the game, which was short-
ened to 3 1/2 innings by the mercy rule. "I
really thought we played great defensively
. and we had no physical errors."
N~wport East will try to bounce back on
Saturday in a 1 p.m. elimination bracket
game against the loser of tonight's Rancho
Niguel-San Clemente game.
Newport East was also victimized offen-
sively by solid Laguna Niguel defense. In
the four innings at the plate, only two NELL
players struck out, with a number of the hit-
ters making solid contact.
The most solid of that contact came in the
top of the third innlng when Josh Yelsey
connected for a solo homer which carried
well over the left-field fence.
But that only seived to make the score
11-1, as Laguna Niguel piled up three runs
in the first and blew it wide open with eight
in the second.
What made things more frustrating for
Newport East was the fact that Laguna
Niguel's first 11 runs all scored with two
outs.
"We came to play and I thought we real-
ly hustled, " said Hackett, •and we hit the
ball hard. We were turning on their pitcher
and pulling just about everything in the first
couple of innings. I'm proud of eve1 y one or
our kids."

COSTA MESA -Matt and
Joe Broesamle, two brothers
with strong roots to Costa
Mesa baseball, are taking
charge of the Costa Mesa
Americari Little League
Senior (14-16) All-Stars this
season.
And the two believe that
pitching and defense will be
critical items if the squdd t">
to enjoy an~tife of suc-
cess in the upcoml:hg Distnct
62 Tournament.
Costa Mesa Amenca n
opens with Robinwood at
noon Saturday in a game at
Johnson Junior High in
Westminster.
"We're hoping to do 1t
with pitching." said Matt
. Broesamle, who 'is lending
his expertise after -t>emg
recently selected the New-
port-Mesa District .Player of
the Year.
Al Lambert will carry
much of the load as the
team's primary starting
pitcher.
·Al has been real consis-
tent around the plate," said
BroesamJe. "He's got a great
change."
Lambert will be backed
up by Troy Thomas and Tom
DeTemple. Behind the plate
figures to be Ryan Gallach-
er, who is also one qi. the
team's backup pitchers
"Thomas pitched well m
a recent scrimmage we had
against the Juniors," said
Broesam.le. "He was throw-
ing strikes."
Broesarnle admits that
offensively Costa ·Mesa
American will have to utilize
its speed to try to make
things happen.
"We have a very fast
team, starting with Ben Fel-
ter at the top of the lineup,"
he said. •tte's the center
fielder for us and we need
bim to generate the
offense.·
Brandon Davidson, the
second baseman, is expect-
ed to hit second, while the
rest of the order is to be
dete-rmined.
Othe r team .member
indude Sean Baume, Scott
