Rosalind Williams, the staff of •
the Newport 'Beach Confer-

spent a busy Friday moving
into thek new office at 3300
W. Coast Highway.
The bureau is now open
for business in its highly visi-

the 14.ndmark Arches restau-

eatery, Chili's, which should
help visitors, conventioneers
and local follcs alike locate the
office quickly.
SPEAKING Of
NEWPORT BEACH ..•
It's interesting to learn
what othen think of you -
and the London Weekly Tele-

much of Newport Beach.
In an arti.de on actor Dud-
ley Moore in the London pub-
lication, writer William Cash
wrote that Moore is Mmoving
to Newport Beach, Orange
County-a faceless, white,
middle-class community
about 60 miles south of LA.

paragraph: ·Nobody moves to
Newport Beach, not wtless
they want to hide.·
Newport resident Granville

Daily Pilot, thinking, rightly
so, that'd we'd like to see it.

PINK UNCOLNS7 \.
QK, so you know there are
a million things to see and do
at the Orange County Fair,
which runs through July 23 at
the county fairgrounds, right
here in Costa-Mesa.
But if you're a Marilyn
Monroe fan, there's one must-
see attraction: the late actress'
1955 Uncoln Capri Convert-
ible is on disj:>lay at the fair.
The coral-pink Capri -
with a pink and white interior
-was one of only 1,200 Lin-
coln Capri Convertibles built
that year. But after the glam-
orous Monroe's death in 1962,
the car sat on the back. lot of
20th Century Fox studios for
years.
' So by the time the Imperial
Palace Antique and Classic
Auto Collection purchased
the vehicle in 1993, it still had
only 26,000 original 'miles on
it. .
Nonnally displayed and
kept at the Imperial Palace
hotel '8.I1d casino ln las Vegas,
the car is touring the country
dwing 1995.

Rev. Susan Kirlin-Hackett returns to Newport Harbor
Lutheran Church With sermon about her battle with cancer
By Tina Oamikolas, Staff Writer
Battling breast cancer may have cost
the Rev. Susan. Klrlli)·Hackett a part
OfDer bodf. But it has given her
back a little more soul.
Kirlin-Hackett, who's been away from
church for the past year undergoing
chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy and
reconstructive swgery, returned this Sun-
day with a sennon about her experiences.
•rm glad I got cancer: said the 46-
year-old reverend, who co-pasto~ the
Newport Harbor Lutheran Chwc:h with
her husband Bill. •tt was something really
big that got my attention.·
Kirlin-Hackett says living with cancer
over the last year helped her learn a
healthier, more productive way to minister
as well as to lead the rest of her_ life.

running to regain ber health.
It also reaffumed. her commitment to
the m)nistry.
At the time her cancer was diagnosed,
Kirlin-Hackett was going through a stress-
ful time as the members of her chwch
readjusted or decided to leave over the
transition from the old pastor, who was
more formal and authoritative, to the Kir·
lin-Hacketts, who had a more democratic

style.
She wondered if the strife going on
around her contributed to the contraction
of the illness and if ministering was really

But during her struggle with the dis-
ease, Kirlin-Hackett said she realized that
she roUid handle the sit\1ation by chang-
ing her attitude from being engulfed in
other people's problems to teaching th em
to help themselves.
Dealing with death on her own, for
instance, gave her confidence in her own
resiliency. ~Nobody can say anything as
bad as 'you're dying,'• she said.
But she also relied on the help of
parishioners, who for the first three
months deaned her home weekly and
brought food three times per week.

THE SMEU OF GAS
Fortunately, nearly all people
are concerned enough when
they smell gasoline in their cars
or -garages to make a prompt
call to the auto technician for a
diagnosis of the probfem. In a
great many cases, the cause of
the gas odor can be traced to
the charcoal canister, the char-
coal canister filter. or the vapor
hoses of the f uel·evaporation
system. Either the charcoal
canister or its filter are clogged
or a damaged fuel evaporation
emissions hose is allowing fuel
vapors to escape. It also may be
that a fuel line is leaking. In any
case, the smell of gas should
lead to a check of all lines run-
ning to and from the fuel tank
As for the fuel tank itself, it
should also be inspected for
leaks and replaced (not
repaired) if necessary.
HINT: Older fuel tanks are
prone to rusting, which can
result in rust particles being
deposited in the fuel filter and
a consequent restriction In
the flow of fuel.
INTERIOR COMFORT ANO EASE
When looking to purchase a
new car, buyers should turn their
attention as much to the interior
as to the car's ride, braking and han~ling characteristics. Erg<r
nom1c engineers have seen to it
in recent years that features
have been added to maxl.mlze
comfort and minimize dlstrao-tJ~: Power-adjusted, orthope-
dic seats assure correct posture
and firm suppo• to combat fatl·
gue Oller long hauls. Buttons anct
knobs on the dashboard and
center conSOfe are aJso easier to
find and are within easy reach.
Engineers have also made them
distinguishable from one another
by touch so that the dr~~
attention Is not diverted from the
road. In addition, adjustable
steering wheels, memory but·
tons for driver seating positions,
and height-ad;ustable seat belts
make drtving safer.

significantly ahead of inflation,
over the long term. The reason:
investing in stocks long term is a
superior way to build wealth,
especially when returns from
investments are compounded
through reinvestment.
Investment experts agree that
international financial stability,
control of inflation, increased
savings and expanded world
trade should have a positive
impact on the continued viability
of investing in equities.
It is a9reed people who invest
in equities, especially common
stocks, should focus on long-term
results when building diversified
portfolios. Not only will this help
minimize the impact of daily
price gyrations it will also

more regi tered voters had
turned out for the election.
"Only about 9,000 out of
48,000 registered voters voted in
favor of it,• Hedges said. ¥If it
were a general election with
greater turnout, it would have
failed in Newport."
Hedges said developers with a
financial stake in the county
might hdve had something to do
with the higher votes for Measure
R, but pointed out that local
developer Buck Johns was very
much agamst it.
By contrast, Costa Mesa resi-

the measure, a 32.3% turnout.
