Rockwell to .NewpOrt: We're staying!
• After being wooed by other
communities, company decides to
expand its local plant.
B)' Tina Borgatta. Staff Writer
NEWPORT BBACH -After weeks of keep-
ing Newport Beach officials dangliny in antic-
ipation, Rockwell officials announced Monday
that the company will move ahead with its
plan for expansion at its p lant on Jamboree
Road .·
The expansion will add 200,000-square-
feet onto its existing 400,000-square-feet of
production sp ace at the facility, which manu-
factures "waler" computer chips used in fax
machines and PC modems.
Rockwell officials had been scouting out
other locations for the project, most notably
Color ado Springs. The flurry of activity
prompted Newport Beach officials to jump
into action and send off an incentives package
to the company late last month.
Dwight Decker, Rockwell Telecommunica-
tions Division president, said the city's propos-
al to "fast-track" or speed up the permitting
process clinched the company's decision to
expand here.
"We have more demand than we have sup-
ply,• Decker said Monday. "So what we real-
ly want to do is get this up and running as
quickly as possible.
."We were looking at the fastest way to
reach new capacity, and the fastest way is to
do it here.•
The project will cost an estimated $200 mil-
' lion and will likely be in operation by next
summer.
"We will start tearing down offices in Sep-
tember, and we will have the first production
line of wafers out nine months after that,•
Decker said.
The company plans to hire between 100
and 150 workers to man the new addition.
The facility already employs some 1,600
workers and iS the city's 12th highest tax con-
tributor, generating more than $330,000 a
year. With the expansion, the city stands to
gain another $1 million in use tax. '-
But according to Decker, this may be just a
hint of what's yet to come.
It comes on the heels of a similar expansion
that was completed at the site earlier this year.
And within the next fe'w m onths, Rockwell

The Force
looking for
redemption
NEWPORT BEACH -The
Poree, a girls' t6~and-under APA
travel softball squad from New-
port Beach, will be hosting the
Orange Taggers in a double-
header at Bonita Creek Park at
noon and 2 p.m. Sunday, trying to
snap back from a double-slam
last weekelld when the San
Clemente Slammers posted 11-10
and 9-8 victories at San Clemente.
The Force didn't lose for lack
of firepower, as it jumped to an 8-
0 lead in the opener with the aid
of four walks and base hits by
Molly Mullen and Stephanie
Gosselin of Newport Harbor and
Linda Van Hook of Calvary
Chapel, as well as three San
Clemente errors.
After seeing that lead melt into
a 9-8 deficit, Mullen doubled and
scored to tie the game at 9-9 in
the fifth , only to see San
Clemente respond with two runs
to go up, 11 -9.
Controversy surfaced in the
sixth inning when two free pass-
es, a Slammer error and Mullen's
third hit of the game scored what
seemed to the tying aJ'\d go-
ahead runs.
However, on two consecutive
plays Force Players were called
out on close plays at home. .
Two runs were also called
back and the game ended on a
controversial interference play at
third base.
In the nightcap The Force
Jumped to another lead, 5-0, after
two innings, only to see San
Clemente bounce back for a 6-5
lead.
Sonia Correa of Costa Mesa
High had two singles, Denise
Love and Van Hook of Calvary
Chapel each had a single, Coro-
na del Mar's Erica Zolle singled
and Harbor Day School's Julia
Livingston had three singles to
lead The Force.
Corona del Mar freshman
Jacque Marsten gave up just two
earned runs in four innings: Liv-
ingston had eight assisted and
unassisted putouts; Gosselin
nailed a Slammer baserunner at
home plate on a throw on the fly
from deep center: and catchers
Wills and Love had inspired plays
keeping Slammer baserunners
from scoring on various occasions
by blocking home plate and
throwing out Slammer baserun-
ners attempting to steal.
