At the Newport Beach City

Sl\JDENTS TEACHING
These young women have only
recently become teachers of the
sport they hiive participated in for .
more than 15 yeais.
·This is the first year that I've
had an opportunity because you
have to take a lot of classes and
my coach from high school asked
if I wanted the job here," Ciridy '
said. •Also, I've taken swimming
lessons here before and so I'm
kind of giving back to the com-
munity.•
Teaching swimming is an ide-
al summer job for Cindy, who
loves water and believes drown-
ing is preventable if everyone is
water-safe. •1 enjoy the w{lter
whether it's the pool. or beach.
or shower, and I fike kids to
experience thai. lt's a job I've
always wanted: outside, work-
ing with little kids.•
Stephanie was surprised to
learn that not everyone knows
hwnans cannot breathe underwa-
ter. •A Jot of people don't know
that; these kids think they can,•
she saJd. •J didn't even realize it
until I started teaching.•
Both instructors agree the most
rewarding part of teaching is
watching the students progress.
Stephartie noted that some of Uie
kids cry on the first day, but soon
theY are showing off and saying,
"Teacher, watch!"
BUILDING TRUST
U there's one thing Cindy and
Stephartie have learned as swim·
mers, It is to have confidence and
build trust
Stephanie says when the chi.1-
dren are crying and she asks,
MAAC MARTN I DAILY PllOT
Swim instructors Cindy Harrigan (left) and Stephanie Mutz.are helping to make people Water safe.
"'Are you scared of the water?'
Most of them say no, they just
want their mom. You have to get
them to trust you.•
Cindy cites the story of one stu-
dent who has become comfort-
able in the water. "It's making the
water something fun instead of
something scary -she trusts me
and she sees that the other kids
aren't afraid.· Cindy said.
"Also, 1 tried not to force her to
do anything. She practiced blow-
ing bubbles in the bathtub and
the next day came (and said),
·watch me do this!'
·At the beginning it's just
these little inches. The first day in
level one, some kids, all they do is
cry. And today, they not only trust
you, but they trust themselves."
MAKING THE BEST Of rT
"'Cindy was the team captain of
the frosh-soph swim team at
Mater Oei when Stephanie came
on board as a freshman three
years ago, and after three years of
dedication to the sport, they've
become friends.
"You're in the water at 5:30 in
the morning and you get out at
6:30 at night, and the weekends,
so you have to like them. It's total
team commradery," Stephanie
said. .
Cindy credits their coaches,
Richard and George Blanc, with
nurturing the friendly atmos·
phere. "Rich Blanc jwt really
made it fun and family in high
school," she said.
The team spirit carries over out
of the water. Sitting on the deck of
the OCC pool between lessons.
Cindy and Stephanie recall a time
when the bus didn't arrive after
one meet. The swimmers dnd the
Blanc coaches ("because they're
the ones that stick with us ~) found
U1emselves stranded in a college
parking lot.
"We found some balls and we
Were playing kickball,~
Stephanie said . "We had tons of
homework, but everyone's like,
'We're he re, so let's make the best
of it."'

towed back to Newport Harbor,
the good ship Bounder resumed
tts voyage to Catalina Island.
There was no fwther incident.
Even the fish kept their distance.
All we brought home were a
some token calico bass and sand
dabs -hardly enough to serve on
a Crdcker.
Even my friend of the previ·
ous Saturday, the baby sbovel-
head shark, was nowhere to be
seen. And so I was forced to
spend most of my time at the
card table, primed to skin any-
thing dropping into the net.
Card shark? Hey, we can't all

Uh, maybe they should name
their next boat something else -
Students of American naval his-
tory are familiar with the vessel
known as Bonhomme Richard. It
was the RevoluOOnary War flag·
ship commanded by heroic Joba
Pa.ul Jones. ·
In an epic battle off the coast
of England. the Bonhomme
Richard, badly blasted and bat-
tered, managed to emerge victo-
i:tous over the vaunted Serapis.
Instead of surrendering, as the
enemy suggested; Jones shouted,
• 1 have not yet bequn to fight!•
Whereupon he. boarded.and
captured the British prize.
That's the good news. The bad
news is that, in the fierce
engagement, the Bonhomme
lticharo was-destroyed by fire.
Owners of the burned-out
namesake vessel, as we now can
joke.about it, had not yet begun
to fish .

The academy is an educa-

serves, according to Costa

propelled the idea of an acad·

months ago.
"It's mainly an education
format where we put methods
we use in police enforcement
to do our job in the field into
training seminars,· Kent said.
"We want to form a partner·
ship with the coninlunity so
they know how we go about
our business.·
The department also
expects the students of the
academy session to offer feed-

they think the departtnent
should serve the city's public
safety needs .• The police
department ls funding the
academy, Kent said. who
added that he did not have the
total cost of the progyam.
Kent said the academy stu-
dents consist of a variety of
people who live in all parts or
the city, including clergy
members and City Council
member Gary Mon~.
The academy session,
which lasts 10 weeks, will be
held at the Costa Mesa Police

the Coastal lnn on Newport
Boulevard, two properties which
accumulated long lists of building
code violations and crime prob-
lems in recent years.
They have also been success-ful in persuading the owners of
the Tuhiti·Inn on Victoria Avenue
~o complete a number of manda-
tory repairs. The teams closed the
motel down for a short time late
last year, until the owner com-
pleted mandatory repairs.
, Meanwhile, city officials have
be9n working to improvq rela-
Uonsbips with motel owners and
are developing a •network• of
Wormation that can be shared
among the owners and local
authorities.
·we already have a number of
the owners' names and te~pbone
numbers in the computer~o that
we know who to contact in the
early morning hours when prob-
lems arise." said Costa Mesa
Police Lt. Alan Kent, who bas
been a driving force behind
enforcement efforts at the motels.
"We're also beginning to have
the owners call us to let the city
know about areas of problems.•
Of the city's 35 lodging opera-
tions, six have been identified as
•very high• pnority cases. The
ran.kings are based on building
conditions and public safety
• records.
The Coast Motel on Newport
Boulevard tops the list. Last year,
police respond••d to 118 calls for
service at the 11-unit property.
That averages out to nearly 11
calls for each room. The Costa Mesa Motor Inn on
Harbor and the Sea Breeze, Tern
Inn and Sea Lark motels, all on
Newport, follow next in line.
The Costa Mesa Motor Inn.
which has 236 rooms, bad a total
of 346 calls for police last year.
The 73-unit Sea Breeze Apart· •
ment Hotel elicited 86 calls. The
Sea Lark, with 40 units, generat-
ed 78; and the 13-unit Tern Inn
had 48.
However, city officials cau·
tioned against putting too much
weight on the number of police
visits at each motel.
•Since the Police Department
encourages motel (and) hotel
owners and managers to call to
report problems or suspicious
activities, some calls are just the
result ot attentive management
practices,• according to a staff
report given to the coundl on
Monday.

Defensive Player of the Year,
remembers exactly how he felt upon
lqaming his prep football career would be
e)Ctended one game, by virtue of being
nhmed to the South squad for Friday night's Jfth Orange county All-Star football game
a Orange Coast. College.
• · •1 was scared,• recalled the Newport
Harbor High product, who though only
S~foot-9 and 195 pounds, had injected fear
il:jto the hearts of opposing offensive linemen
eftch of his last two standout seasons.
"Then, when I foilnd out about making
the all-star team, I started to wonder a little
about proving myself again to a whole new
group of guys," J ohns continued.
H At Newport, I'd earned a certain
reputation as a guy who could do things right
and, when the t>all was snapped, would go
hit people. But I knew I'd have to start from
scratch with these guys, who are all huge."
"He looked right at me and said: 'No son,
I didn't say free safety,' •Johns recalled. "He
didn't even know who I was."
Apprehension, however, began to ease
rather quickly for Job,ns, who follnd his blend .
of strength, detennination, quickness and
technique, was just as effective against his
all-star peers as it bad been ~gainst a string
of helmet-scratching Division V foes.
·rd say by the second practice, I was
comfortable again,• said Johns, who now
thinks be may give the gridiron one more
shot as a walk on at the University of
Arizona.
"I'm not going to go out next year,
because I think I need to get a little bigger
(add weight)," Johns sai·d. "But after talking
to (former Newport teammate) Beau Ralphs
(who transferred to Arizona last fall from
Villanova}, I think (may be able to play there
after all."
Johns has certa, inly made a believer of
South Coach Jim Barne tt, who said the
noseguard/tackle has had little trouble
ma.king flD impact in South scrimmages,
despite battling trench rivals up to 10 inches
taller and 100 pounds heavier.
"He spent most of (Monday's) practice in
, "I thought when we won the CIF (Division
\I,) championship against Servite, it would
s~riously be my last football game,• said
J(>hns, whose relatively diminutive stature
didn't exactly captivate four-year college
reauiters.
Johns' anxiety grew at the opening
workout, when he raised his hand in
response to a South assistant coach's request
for a volunteer at offensive guard.

Moreover, he's likely to
see the ball airborne in his

he did during his
distinguished varsity

•Mike's excited," said
South Coach Jim Barnett,
who guided a diversified _ Bony Pnlbet
nabuco Hills offense the
past 10 seasons, •because
he knows I like to use the tight end a lot. As good as
he was, he didn't get the chance to catch the ball
much at Newport."
Freeman did in fact haul in 73 receptions for 855
yards for Newport Coach Jeff Brinkley. But that took
three seasons as a starter, spanning 39 games.
Freeman's final patteqi last fall the game-winning
38-yard sideline streak for a touchdown in the CIF
Division V championship game against Servile, was
one of only a handful of chances be had to -in the
parlance of a receiver -stretch the field.
•The patterns I'm running (for the South) are a lot

In addition to his pass
