could avoid the rain.

It's not
eally such
a drag
getting old
D ear Mom and Dad,
I wrote th.is column for
your kids and grandkids,
so they'll understand you better
and appreciate the eccentricities
of aging. Cut it out dJld put it
somewhere where they're sure to
find it. like the freezer where you
keep your ice credl'Tl.
•on behaH of your parents
we'd like to clear up a few myths
about groWUlg old, since you'll
have to do it one day, like it or
not. It isn't all bad. In fact a lot of
it is downright enjoyable. For one,
you escape a lot ot those tiresome
frolics that require enormous
energy -like wall-to-wall stand-
up cocktdil parties.
RirtatJon is no longer an
option, and conversation between
generations is frequently guarded.
Going to bed with a sizding nov-
el, and a good husband by your
side is far more rewarding. You
can't believe that? Wait and see.
The conservation of energy
also applies to housework. You no
longer can see the dust and chaos
without your glasses. U you've
chosen the right near-sighted
mate, he won't nag you about lax
housekeeping until the re's a crisis
with dust balls as big as tumble-
weeds l.&Dder the bed.
Since you can't afford to be
chic on a linuted mcome, it's a
good bme to ¢luck your vanity.
So what that you wear comfort-
able clothes and flat shoes?
You've done your time in spike
heels and push-up bras. Now you
can relax as a retired sex symbol.
Losmg your looks is one of the
toughest adjustments, but once
-you get used to your weathered
facade, you accept your face as an
old friend.
Living on a fixed income, it'd
be a lot more difficult to discipline
spending if one had the energy to
make whoopee. But nature is
kind. She slows you down when
your mcome slows down. You no
longer hunger for expensive toys.
Well. maybe a tricyc;le or golf
club.
What about your health. you
ask? That's a bummer, I'm afraid.
Some thingmajig is always wear-
ing out, so ytu spend more time
with the mefl in white than you
care to, but that's the fee for
longevity. Pay it and don't whine.
While your body may not be
petfonning up to Olylhpic stan-
dards, the brain functions far
longer than the thighs. Be grateful
it isn't the reverse. Many people
accomplish remarkable achieve-
ments in their vintage years.
You're old one-third of your
life. While you ·can't live it up,
don't live it down. Nobody ever
died from an advanced case ot
wrinkles, so don't worry about
them, or you'll get frown lines."

GEORGE ZIMMERMAN I DAILY PILOT FILE
Duke Kabanamoku and hls longboard.
-T-H E SULTAN OF S-lJRF
Duke Kahanamoku made a huge splash when he first
hit the Newport waves with his long board in 1922
I n 1922, the Southern Cali-
fornia Yachting Assoaatlon
held a regatta in Newport
Bay. Vtsitors crowded the
hotels and guest rooms ol the
small town. Among those vis-
itors was a Hawailan, Olympic
swimming champion and
surfer Duke Kahanamoku.
He and his mahogany long
board became instant crowd
pleasers as be surfed the big
breakers created by the lone
harbor jetty. The Duke stayed
on, living in a tent on the
beach in Corona del Mar, and
soon organized a surfing club
with headquarters at a bath-
house there. He also joined
the Life S•ving Corps.
Deraga, a Russian-born
meteorologist, lived with his
wife, Martha, on the Coronll
del Mar bluffs. He organized
the Life Saving Corps after a
futile attempt at resrue when
three men drowned in the
treacherous bay em:~nce on
New Year's Day, 1923.
In the early morning hours
of June 14, 1925, heavy seas
pounded the harbor entrance.
Kahanamoku was about to
take a morning swim, and
saw Deraga trying to wave
back a launch, Thelma, wal-
lowing through the high surf
and sand bars.
The launch capsized and
17 men were thrown into the
water. K~anamoku took his
surfboard through the huge
waves and in three trips,
saved seven of the men.
Deraga and Charlie Plum-
mer raced down to the beach
and grabbed boards to rescue
five more, but five men
drowned before they could be
hauled across the surfboards.
Because of Kahanamoku's
heroic example, surfboards
were included in standard
lifesaving equipment in the
harbor for many yea.rs.

tournament championship
at San~ Ana Country Club.
NEWPORT BEACH -When it
came down to crunch time, Char-
µe Wi delivered with flying col-
ors, rolling in dutch birdie putts
on the 16th and 17th holes to win
the 96th Southern California Golf
Association Amateur Champi-
onship Sunday at Santa Ana
Country Club.
The ~~-year-old Wi, who lives
in North Hills and attends Cal-·
Berkeley; went birdie-birdie-par
over the three treacherous finish-
ing holes to finish with a one-
under-par 70 Sunday for a four-
round total of 280. ·
He was four shots in front of
Jim Lundstrom of Mission Hills
and Jorge Corral of Tijuana.
With his victory, Wi becomes
Just the 13th player to win both
the SCGA Amateur and Callior-
nia State Amateur Championship
(which he captured in 1990).
Earlier this year, he-won the
Pac-10 championship while play-
ing for the Golden Bears.
Wi also secured a title that has
proven elusive. In four previous
SCGA Amateur appearances, he
tied for eighth in 1990, was fourth
m '92, tied for 16th in '93 and was
third last year.
Corral, the 18-year-old Tijuana
resident who Saturday tied the
course record with a 63, closed to
within one shot of Wi when he
birdied the par-thr.ee 14th hole.
and Lundstrom, a 35-year-old -
school teai::her, got to within one
shot when he birdied the par-five
15th bole.
But Wi responded like a cham-
pion, rolling in a 12-foot downhill,
sliding birdie putt on the par-
thr.ee 17th ta lock up the.Jitle.
For good measure, he got up
and down from a greenside
bunker to par the 18th hole and
secure his four-shot margin.
Former two-time Pac-10
champion Jason Gore of Valencia
had the day's low round. 68, and
finished fourth with a total of 289.
Another shot baclt were Chad
Wright of Ventura, who dosed
with a 72 Sunday, and recently-
crowned Calif omia Amateur
champion Jeff Sanday. who had a
75 Sunday.
Kelly Schendler of Thousand
Oaks had the shot of the day
when he holed out a six iron on
the par-three 11th hole for a hole-
in-one.
Boyd Martin of SACC finished
at 314.
