• Their deaths still a mystery, the three tiny bodies found in
Newport Beach and other parts of the county will be laid to rest.
'
By <:arolyn Mlll~r. Daily Pilot
As they are laid to rest in tiny bl!!_e,
pink and white caskets at funeral ser-
vices later this week, the three Wliden-
tified infants whose corpses were found
within days of each other in March will
be named after angels.
Angelica, Ariel and Michael Will
replace the generic identities, "John
and Jane Doe" of the three infants.
The first tiny body -that of a little
girl -washed ashore in Newport
Beach; the second, another girl, was
found at Sunset Beach; and the third, a
boy, was found abandoned in a box in
South County.
Father Pabick Callahan, associate
pastor at Saint Matthew American
Catholic Church in Orange, will cele-
brate the inf ants' short life in funeral
and burial services scheduled Thurs-
day and Friday. .
"I just want to give everyone an
opportunity to come if they want and
celebrate these children's lives with
us," Callahan said. "We had notl')ing
but their sexes to go on, l\lld in the
Christian faith we believe children who
die are considered to be angels. w
Plans for the infants' burial come
after law enforcement officials exhaust-
ed all leads that might uncover the
idenlity of the infants' parents, accord-
ing to Deputy County Coroner Brian
Mitchell.
The first dead newborn was report-
edly found March 11 on the beach near
10th Street, by a Garden Grove woman
who was walking on the Balboa P~-
sula shore. ·
The second baby was found a day
later, washed up on the shore of SWlset
Beach. ·The third baby was found
March 14, in a box left in the parking
lot of a San Clemente apartment com-
plex, according to police.
All three babies were about the
same age -less than a week old -and
roughly the same size and weight -
between 6 and 8 pounds and 19 and.21
inches. The umbilical cords were st.ill
attached to all three, according to
Orange County Sheriff's and police
Jose DNesm Clmeros was stuck ID the stars for an hour on the Orange County Fair's Ejector Seal
reports.
When he read of the babies' deaths,
Callahan immediately wanted to help.
The clergyman happened to be in the
midst of starting a program, called
w Children of the Ark,• to provide
funeral services for deceased unidenti-
fied children and adults.
Callahan called the county coroner's
oCfice and offered to provide the chil-
dren a proper burial. Last week, when
the 'coroner's deputies concluded their
investigation, they called Callahan.
He sought the help of Memory Gar-
den Memorial Park and Mortuary in
Brea to provide a resting place for the
infants.
John Wines, general manager of the
mortuary, donated a.burial site and caskets.

A Pepperdine University doc-

20 years. Starting at age 12 car-
rying around a sweeper pan and

tions, 32-year-old Steven Beaz-
~ey has •grown up " with the fair.
FAIR DAYS
"Every year, I still feel a
renewed excitem ent about the
fair," says Beazley, sitting
amongst rows of com and pep-
pers in the Centennial Farm
area. "I still get that anticipation
of something coming, like the
week before Christmas Day .• I
think that more than anything
bas sustained me."
For eight summers since
1975, Beazley traveled to Costa
Mesa from Washin_gton state to
work at the fair. ·He progressed
from being a "cart boy" who
shuttled musicians around the
grounds to becoming a graphic
artist who designed several of
the signs aqd facades still in use
today. In 1984, he moved to Cos-
ta Mesa and-began working
year-round at the fairgrounds.
Now the self-proclaimed

Still, Beazley has been
adventurous enough to try his
hand at many things. He worked
as an actor with the South Coast
Repertory and sang in clubs
around Orange County.
"l think for the people who
catch the spirit, it's something
you have to keep doing," says
Beazley, his eyes lighting up
behind his glasses and his hands
gesturing toward the vegeta·
bles. "Once yo'1 get a taste, you
remember why you work here.•
But perhaps the most signifi·
cant fair experience for Beazley
was meeting his future wife,
Diane. The two fair workers
started as friends, who'd talk
whenever they ran into each
other around the fairgrounds.
After two or three years, some-
thing suddenly something
clicked, And following a series
of dates, the two are now bappi·
ly married.
•I've been allowed to grow
and mature here, and will forev·

that," says Beazley, the hot sun
darkening his face. •Now I'm

NeW dev~loper looks to put
;Emerald Village· back on track
• Las Vegas orthopedist says he wants to build the
same senior housing complex approved six years
ago -but with a new name.
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -After a
three-year absence, plans for a
derty careTaffiify bave
been re-submitted to the city and
will arrive at the city Planning
Commission Thursday.
Plans for Summer House -for-
merly called Emerald Village -
are unchanged from the propos-~ approved by the City Council
m .May 1~9. The city issued per-
Dllts to build the project in May
1991, but the> pemµts expired
one year later after Emerald Vtl-
lage ~sociates, Inc., was unable
to secure appropriate funding for
the $15 million project. •
Now the project is back with a
new applicant and, project offi-
cials claim, more reliable funding.
But . developer optimism
notwithstanding, homeowners in
Corona del Mar say the new
plans have stirred up old con-
cerns over elements of the build-
ing's design, parking and emer-
gency vehicle access.
Summer House, proposed at
the intersection of ·East Coast
Highway and Hazel Drive, is
designed as an up~cale personal
care facility for seruors who do
not require nursing assistance.
Seniors will pay an average of
$3,000 a month for rooms, meals
and transportation.
• Pormer Councibnan Phil San-
sone, writing on behalf of the
Corona del Mar Residents Asso-
ciation, asked the Planrung
<:;ommission to .postpone review
of the project for one month. The
residents want to meet with the
pr~ject's new owner-managing
director before a formal city
hearing takes place, according to
Sansone.
"The previous owner lived in
Corona del Mar and he held sev-
eral briefings to alleviate a lot of
the residents' concerns,· San-
sone said. "What we're asking
now is that you bnef us again so
that we can express our concerns
and you can tell us how you plan
to alleviate them.•
The new applicant is James
Thomas Jh_.a Las_ V~ Orth~
pedist. Local consultant David
Neish, who is representing
Tho~as. said Monday that he
had not heard of any request for
a continuance.
•At this point, Dr. Thomas just
wants to reinstitute the old
plans," Niesh said. "He wants to
do precisely what was approved
four years ago and it's his desire
to move as quickly ~ possible."
According to project consul-
tant Bill Todd, the need for a
facility like Summer House con-
tinues to be substantial. The for-
mer president of Emerald Village
Associates, Todd said h e has
been retained by Thomas to
"help put the project back
together."
·we once had a list of 400
people expressing interest in the
facility,· Todd said Monday.
"Back when Emerald Village
was still around, we bad a func-
tion at the Five Crowns Restau-
rant and people were trying to
give us deposit checks to get
their names on the list to move m.
"These people have contin-
ued to age and find places in the
community. There's probably a
greater demand today than there
was four years ago.·
Residents are likely to bring a
handful of concerns to the Plan-
ning Commission and, later to
the City Council. In the past,
concern from neighbors forced
developers to scale back the pro-
ject's size and number of units.
Residents have also ques-
tioned the amount of parking the
facility would need or use. The
project calls for 46 underground
parking places -18 for employ-
ees, two for shuttle vans and 26
for resident or guest parking.
Developers hope to have all
reqwred city permits and begm
construction by spring of next

The guide is scheduled to be
approved Aqg. 22 for the coming
school year. ,
The so-called ABC bill,
spurred on by poor fourth-grade
pelfonnances on the California
:Learning.Assessment System test
last year, would ensure that state-
approyed. textbooks and instruc-
tional materials include basic
instntction in phonic;s, spelling
an~ math computations.
Anderson said these basic .
skills have al~ays been a part of elementary lassTOoms in New-

despite the s ale's leanings m past
years. ·

While the bill woulcln 't change
instruction in Newport-Mesa's
classrootn.S, it would help with ~
funding of some tenboo.ks and
materials, Anderson said .
Since the stat& has not
approved speffing or phonks
books for its list of acceptable
textbooks, schools have had to
buy the books with other funds.
"But now we'd be able to use
state funds," Anderson said.
AB 170 is listed on the Senate's
consent calendar and should
make it to the governor's desk
shortly, according to Assembly·
man Mickey Conroy's (R·Orange)
office. Conroy is one of the bill's
three sponsors .

• NBCC wins battle with Coto de

PGA Senior Tout event's host for at
least the next two years.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
~WPORT BEACH -The Newport Beach
Country Club will host the Toshiba Senior
Classic the next two y~ars, event manage-
ment announced Monday, and NBCC vice
president and general manager Jerry Ander-
son exp~essed optimism th"at a long-term
agreement could be reached to make the
Senior Professional Golf Association Tour
event a local fixture Into the next century.
"We hope to have a long relationship with
Toshiba and the Senior PGA Tour," said
Anderson, after receiving word that NBCC
had won a battle with Coto de Caza Golf
Clu.P to host the event, inaugmated last
March at the Mesa Verde Country Club ID
Costa Mesa.
The 1996 Classic is scheduled March 11-
17, with a'pro-am, a junior clmic and a
shootout among the events slated before
some of the sport's legendary figures (players
age 50 and older) begin vying for the $1 mil-
lion prize purse, before national ~levision
coverage by ESPN.
·we've secured the event for two years
and, assuming Toshiba continues its relation-
ship with the Senior PGA Tour, we hope to be
the host facility for the tournament for many
years,• Anderson said.
Bob Neely, president of International
Sports and Event Marketing, which will
"Oversee operation of the event, said NBCC's
location and gallery-friendly course layou\
were the primary reasons it was selected
over Coto de Caza. _
"Newport Beach is such an U1lportant part
of Oran~e County.· we feel holding tbe event
there will let the people of Orange County
better padicipate in the tournament," !iaid
Neely, who dlso cited -locaJ support as a plus.
"We've either had meetings or spoken ·
with the Newport Beach Chamber of Com-
merce, the Econon'uc Development Council,
the Irvine Company and F'dshion Island
Merchant's Association,· Neely said. "We
feel the people of Newport Beach want to be
behind the event 100%. •
Anderson'4fld Neely said a site fee will be
paid to NBCC, but both dechn·ed to speclfy

An erson said the acquisition of d Senior
PGA Tour event is a reflection of a 10-year
rebuildmg effort at !'&cc. formerly known
as the Irvine Coast Country Club
"We've made a lot of improvements to the
golf course and we recently renovated our
clubhouse and dining rooms,· said Ander~
son; who believes a strong base of volunteers
who helped run the Newport Classic for
many years at the club, will ease the transi-
tion to NBCC's first-ever marquee tourna-
ment.
"(Volunteers) are d big deal, because
there are a lot of people who have to help for
an event like this to be successful," Anderson
explained. "I also feel our memb~rsQip will
get behind it and work hdrd to insur~ a suc-
cessful event."
Anderson also said dn open week in the
senior tour schedule .(the event prevtous to

quite a few players who spend the week

leaving Ojai Valley.
