COSTA MESA -A state health depart-
m ent official has expressed concern over
structural deficiencies that could lead to
contamination problems at Mesa Consoli-
dated Water District's Reservoir No. 2, a

In addition, Ha.mamura said the configu-
ration of the new $20-million reservoir does
not includ e any type of automatic circula-
tion pwnp to compensate for the single
pipeline system. And, he said, the district is
limited in its options to deal with the situa-
tion.
"We would like them to be able to over-
flow the top, because in a reservoir of this
size, if the water is not circulating efficient-
ly, then a film can collect at the top and har-
bor microorganisms and pathogens,"
Hamamura said.
"What we want them to ultimately be
able to do is overflow the reservoir on a reg-
ular basis.•

On Tuesday, as controversy
over his deosion enveloped the
community, Grant sent off a letter
to Jack Hammett, chairman of the
Newport Beach/Costa Mesa

Committee, suggesting the two
sides meet to discuss the matter.
~As we agreed many months

Grant said in the letter. " ... U leav-
ing the wording on the plaque as
it presently exists is the right thing
to do, then, as we agreed, let's sit
together and settle upon it before
it goes forward to the Board of

Grant could not be reached for
comment Tuesday.
But Hammett and other mem-
bers of the committee, wtuch
developed the plaque, said they
were flooded with calls Tuesday
supporting their-efforts.

"We've had offers from two other
places (willing to display the
plaque). But we're not going to do
anything until we talk to Orange

will meet with Grant and the
school's chancellor William Vega

By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
City tourism officials want to
insure that Newport Beach feels
tbs.heat when the Olympic Torch
Relay heads east toward Atlanta
in the summer of 1996.
Upon learning that Newport
~each was not listed as part of
the torch relay route in Southern
Calif ornia1 Rosalind Williams of
the 'ctty's Conference and Visi-
tors Bureau took to the phones.
How could a route which
includes Huntington Beach,
Laguna Beach, Dana Point and
San Juan Capistrano not include
Newport Beach , Williams won-
dered.
"I called up the Olympic Com-
mittee," Williams said. "I want
them to bring the torch through
here. I want maximum exposure
fo r Newport Beach."
David Emanuel, a spokesman
for the Atlanta Committee for the
Ol~pics Game, said TuesdAy
that, despite the f aet the clty was
not listed, the flame will probably
pass through Newport Beach.
"Our goal is to bring the fiame
to as many people as possible,"
said Emanuel. "So far, we've only
been able to announce 85 o/o of the
cities which we'll pass through.
There will be many more
between these points."
As part of the Olympic tradi-
tion, the torch will move across
the country, ultimately ti!Dding up
in metropolitan Atlanta for the
Olympics next July.
The torch will pass through the
hands of numerous carriers over
the course of the 15,000 mile
route. Many will run with the
torch; others will travel by bicycle
or by boat, Emanuel said.
The first day of the relay
begins in Los Angeles and ends in
Huntington Beach. Williams' first
question for Committee Opera-
tions Manager Rennie lh.litt: why
not finish the first day of the relay
in Newport Beach?
"Holiday Inn is a major spon-
sor of the Olympics, and (the run-
Newport tourlsm ottidals are hoping the Olympic Torch (pic-
tured above ln 1984) makes an appearance in Newport Beach.
ners) will be staying at the Holi-
day Inn," Williams said. "But (the
current route) works out even bet-
ter since they'll be starting out
from Huntington Bea ch in the
morning. It will be easier to draw
a crowd."
Williams plans to meet with
nuitt when the operations man-
ager visits Southern California in
a few weeks .. Sbe hopes to line up
torch carriers in Newport Beach,
or at least to gather a crowd to
cheer the runners along and gain
some media exposure.
"It would be great to line up
people from the city limits of
Huntington Beach all the way
down to Corona del Mar, "
Williams said. "That would be
fabulous and l think it could hap -
pen.• The following people were arrested
recently on suspicion of driving under

been arrested on suspicion of a crime
and, as with all such crimes, they are

Hamamura's concerns, saying the

"There's absolutely nothing to

As for the overflow system,
Kemp said the district plans to con-

couple of years.
"Our undemanding is that a
major storm drain is planned for
23rd Street, and that line will be

She scored a 4 .83 on her sec-
