L lke many antiques of my . generation, I find mysell growing increasingly mtolerant of today's culture -if that is the word -especially the deafening racket called music. The other day, my grandson almost blew me out of the car with his screaming tape deck. However, I've been brood- mg lately whether I was get- 1ting "set in my ways." The victim is always the last to know. W,hen I expressed my con- cern to my best frie nd, she rec- ommended the only chiroprac- tor in the world who sp ecial- izes in relieving "set ways" by manipuJation. "It's painful," she confessed, "to lose all your knee-jerk reactions and dog- matic beliefs, but it's worth it to be an independent thinker dgain ... f)uring my interview with Dr. Feelgood, I was amazed he practiced his own medicine. J le was at least 80 with the flexibility and tolerance of a kid. Heavy metal music was blaring on his tape deck. "Alter years or research," the doctor explained, "I locat- ed the source of 'Set Ways' in the neck muscles close to the brain. The more set they are, the harde r to manipulate. I would guess yours are still pli- able since you agreed to see me.· He promised, however, if his treatment didn't work, his part- ner, who is a remarkable brain surgeon, specializes in opening closed mmds, so they have a wider and more tolerant view. "Many politicians attribute their successful elections to his surgery," he added. "Some even change political parties." Since I didn't feel I required such a draconian treatment, we went ahead with Dr. Feelgo- od 's usual treatment. Once he began his manipulations, he announced my problem was more rigid than expected, and he would have to probe deep- er. Finally, he discovered the first tight knot of opirlions. As he started loosening them, it was terribly painful. You feel you're letting go of a vital part of you you've always chenshed as "value~." When it was over, I was more relaxed and carefree than I felt in years. I assured the doctor my only goal was showing my grand- sons theLT old granny was hdnging loose again and will- ing to put up with their God- awful music. "I'd leave out that last crack," the doctor added, "or they might urge you to come back for another treatment." • NANCY MclNTYRE'S column appears M onday. VOL 89, NO. 179 ntOMAS H. JOHNSON. J4- RETIRING THE BUOY 11fter four decadeS donning lifeguard swim trµnks and watching over the- beach, George Spangler says goodbye to the surfside job By Julie Ros/ Cannon, Daily Pilot Mer 40 years of surf, sand and sun, George Spangler calling it quits. The Monte VJSta High School teacher has donned lifeguard swim trunks every summer since he was 18 years old. But seeing a former student's child enrolled in the junior lifeguard program this year, Spangler decided to retire his own lifesaving buoy. "The guy who's the captain of the lifeguard station, I taught hin} how to drive," Spangler said. "That also got me thinking I'd been around bere long enough." Spangler, 58, bas watched six different lifeguard chiefs rule the roost at three different headquar- ter locations. When he joined the crew in 1955, Spangler was one of only 12 N~wport Beach lifeguards who met outside a cramped headquar- ters near the Fun Zone. The only two vehicles they owned were a World War II jeep and a Ford pick-up truck, Spangler said. But Spangler's favorite station was at 19th Street and Ocean Front, where he met bis wife of 25 yeQJs, Linda. "That was the best thirlg that happened with the job," he said. "It almost gives me goose bumps thinking about these things.". Back m the "old" days, life- guards ~ere assigned to one sta- tion for the entire summer. Now the lifeguards, who number more than 130, rotate from station to station. LOO ;,; ... G BA~K . ... - .-It's a fish tale just a · little one T he first inhabitants of our favored coast were blessed with a steady, unfailing food sJipply harvested from the sea. Abalone, mussels, tidepool shellfish and an abundance of fish. were caught by spear fishing and hand woven nets. So it was remarkable that one fish would actually come up on the beach for the taking. Native Americans called it "fish that dances on the beach at the full moon" and during summer nights, they could fill baskets with silvery fish riding in on the high tides. Later settlers called it "grunion run- ning." They built fires on the beach to keep warm and cook the fish as they grabbed them out of the water. California grunion (leuresthes tenuis) are small ocean dwelling tide experts. They know the highest tides occur just after the new moon and the full moon during their summer spawning season; and they also know the incubation time of their eggs is two weeks. So on the fullest high tide of the new moon or the full moon, the female gruruon rides the highest wave in to the shore, and with her tail digs a hole in the sand and deposits her eggs. She is immediately surrounded and sometimes embraced by a group of as many as eight males who release milt to fertilize the eggs, whkh are covered in sand and sate above the high water mark on the beach. In two weeks, on the highest tide of the next moon change, those hatchlings are \Vashed back out to sea . The gruruon are back for the taking on our beaches during the peak evening tides during the new and the full moon this month. You have to catch them with your hands, armed only wtth a fishing license. No nets allowed. My own reaction is to let them go . Any fish that can dance on its tail in the moonlight deserves more than tartar sauce. -Compiled by Anne Spinn and low douds with FnMn SUrfllne COSTA MESA afternoon dearlng. This is especially true in families with only one dedi~ated bookworm. Horgan It takes patience and planning to build your financial future. The investment ladder is an investment alternative for those frustrated by the climb toward financial independence. For investors. that means a portfolio that will perform well in unpredictable market environments. • By laddering maturities, an investor structures his or her portfolio with several different bonds which mature in consecutive years. This diversification helps reduce risk. improve yield potential. and ensure liquidity and reinvestment flexibility. As bonds mature, the original principal is returned to you. This principal can be put back into the ladder through the purchase of new bonds, enhancing the investment. It can also be used to fund a college education, buy a house or secure other financial goals. Fact by Paul Frech SERVICE & REPAIR GERMAN SWEDISH t JAPANESE AUTOMOBILES EXERTING CONTINUOUS PRESSURE Nearly half of the new auto- mobiles on American roads have antilock brakes. The popu- larity of this feature is due large- ly to the public's desire for safer cars. At the same time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (llHS) points out that many car owners do not know enough about how antilock brakes work to put them to their best use. Most drivers have been taught to gently pump their brakes on slick roads in order to prevent a skid. However. this is not the foot/pedal action required of antilock brakes, which automatically provide 1he pumping action for the driver. All that is needed to activate anti- lock brakes is continuous brake pressure. By pumping their brakes, drivers inadvertently cir· cumvent their antilock braking systems. · HINT: The presence of antilock brakes should not be taken as a signal to drive any less carefully than without them. THE PROPER ROTATION To get the most wear and val- ue out of a set of tires, car own- ers.are usually advised to rotate their tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. On front-wheel-drive cars, this means moving the front tires straight back and criss· crossing the back tires up to the front. On rear-wheel-drive auto- mobiles, move the back tires straight up to the front and move the front tires back to opposite wheels. On four-wheel- drtva vehicles that require a shift Into 4WD, the tires should be rotated In the same manner as with a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. If no shifting Is involved (all· wheel-drive), the tires should be rotated as If It were a front· wheel-drive vehicle. At the same time, have the tires checked for balance. .. . PO.P WARNER KICKS IT OFF • Costa Mesa's five teams begin conditioning dnI.ls at Te Winkle Park. By Dennis Brosterhous, Daily Pilot C osta Mesa Pop Warner Foot- ball kicked off the 1995 season at 5:30 p.m. last Tuesday at ieWinkJe Park when five teams began their conditioning drills. Cobra Coach Rick Erickson greeted 22 ~ven-to eight-year-olds weighing up to 80 pounds and any nine-year-old weighing 70 that had not played before. The 2 112-hour workout had the players in helmets, cleats and ~outhpieces, but no pads until this week. "(There's) no one-on-one contact µntil all players have completed 20 hours of conditioning," Erickson said. "We'll put the team in pads next week, but just so they will be used to them when the hitt:Lng starts m the third week." Condors are eight-, rune-and 10- year-olds that weigh between 55 and 90 pounds and 11-year-olds that weigh between 55 and 70. The 1995 prospects have gotten to know Coach Vic Larsen, who is still seeking a few more players. "We aren't looking for experience, that's not necessary since we have several first-year players already," said Larsen. The Colts are players nine, 10 and 11 that weigh between 70 and 105 pounds and any 12-year-old weighing between 70 and 85. Coach Ron · Ambuigey, who played football at Costa Mesa High, found 28 hopefuls ready to begin their season which runs through Thanksgwing. "We have better than 50% 'veterans,' but we'll be glad to see any new team member who wants to play," said Amburgey "ln Pop Warner, every pla~r plays in evety game, and we never cut a player." Coach Mike Schepens, who also played at Costa Mesa High, will bring a veteran Comanche team to the '95 season. Comanches are 10, 11 and 12, weighing 85-120 and any 13-year-old that weighs up to 100 pounds. "I looked at our roster and saw 2? names that have been with us in prior years," said Schepens. ·Our first practice was great -these guys had a , CASEY LUKSCH I DAll.Y PllOT Seven-year-old Tony Riva has his most important piece of equipment attended to by assistant coach Ephraim Barcelo. taste of playoffs in '94 and want to see .!what 'all the way' means." Costa Mesa's "big guys" -the Cowboys -are 11 -to 13-year-olds that weigh up to 140 and any 14-year-old that weighs 120 or less and will be coached by Gary Baume, another Costa Mesa High football alumnus. HWe're a little light in numbers right now, but that's usual at thls level," Baume said. MMost 14·year-olds are into high school ball and our veterans are still drifting m. We'll get a few players from the other levels because of weight, but we would like to see another ha.IJ-dozen sign up to give us a complete team. "There's still room for those with desire, dedication, disQpline and determination." President Lou Desandro said he's been pleased with the progress of the workouts ·we have several klds who are still on vacation or out of town for many reasons," he said. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot HUNTINGTON BEACH - Somehow in cyberspace, a com- ptunication breakdown led to the fall of Tricia Gill Saturday in the women's quarterfinals at the U.S. Open of Swfing. With five minutes remaining in a close beat between Gill and Australia's Neridah Falconer, the public-address announcer, who described wave-by-wave accounts of the prestigious con- test south of the Huntington Beach Pier and revealed updated scores of each heat to the com- petitors in the ocean, declared that Gill had a slim lead. But they were reading from a bogus computer program system. So Gill sat on Falconer, catch- ing her fourth and final wave with about 4:30. left, then doing . everything she could to prevent Falconer from connecting with a high-scoring wave by staying close to her. By the end of the heat, it was tied, each surfer with 22.23 points. Falc;oner advanced on the count-back rule, where the top three scoring waves are tallied, ·rather than the customary four ·1 was under the impression that I won the heat, but I didn't. because some guy upstairs made a mistake,• Gill, obviously dejected. said. "I sat on (Falcon- er) in the last five nunutes. I don't think it would bother me if they didn't announce it. You can't announce something and go back on what you said. I know it was an honest mistake, but when you're dealing with people at that crucial of a time, that's not right.· U.S. Open announcers could not be reached for comment. But Mano Ziul, ASP computer programmer, said these events normally use three or five judges. "ln the Op Pro (which ended eight days ago), when we split the competition zone (for simulta- neous beats) and used four judges. I had to quickly change the program, and I skipped some of the procedures. One of the pro- cedures I skipped was the be- breaking, so inside the computer program the result was nght, but on the screen (for the announc- ers), it was wrong ... the mistake was there, waiting to pop up." The announcement of erro· neous information changed Gill's strategy in Ole waning moments of a heat worth at least $600 extra. Losers in the quarterfinals earned $1,250: losers in the semi- finals $1,850. "I feel I probably would've done something different bad I been losing, or known I was los- ing, but I took the opportunity to sit right by my competitor," Gill said. •1 have a bad taste in my mouth ... 1 wish the outcome was better.
