NEWPORT BEACH -In a
word, the summer so far has been
described by locals as "sporadic."
The weather, the waves and
the water have been madde$g·
ly unpredictable. Many days the
skies are cloudy and gray, the
water chilly, the fish letbar~c and
the beach crowds sparse. •
Fishermen, business people,
surfers and lifeguards have all
noticed the effects of nature's
fickleness this summer. But their
hope for a scorching, surf-soaring
summer hinges on August, tradi-
tionally the hottest and busiest
month of the season.
The oddity of the summer was
reeled in Saturday.·
"One of our boats caught a
king salmon," said Norris Tapp. a
captain at Davey's Locker. •I have
never seen a king salmon in
August -the word was nobody
had ever seen an~g like it. It
was unusu~. We don't know if he
was lost."
The catch was "phenomenal"
for August because usually
salmon, which thrive in cooler
water, are found here only in May
and June, Tapp said.
Tapp pinpoints the anival of
the reel tide in January -which
altered the oxygen levels in the
water -as the start of the "fluctu-
ations· in water temperature and
subsequently the inconsistencies
Ln the fishing industry.
"The species that are here
don't like the changes,· Tapp
said. "When the water tempera-
ture drops, they become lethar-

question, •Can there be life after
Gadd! R. Vasquez?" So let's fill
today's space with offerings and
observations of,a non-political
nature. There might even be
some items you didn't already
know, a.s follows:
-Accolades of the week must
be bestowed on plucky, perky
Barbara Aune, who's back at her
Grubb & Ellis realty office only
three months .after a harrowing
series of bone marrow trans-
plants. She dismisses her ordeal
of cancer treatments as though
they were merely symptoms of a
common cold. We should all be
so unsinkable.
-Equally admirable is the
remarkable Nora Hester, who
wears her 82 years proudly and
beautifully -the envy of women
half her age. With devoted hus-
band Charley, Nora visited my
cage the other day to deliver a
tape of Friday's "Regis & Kathie

They'll tie the knot Sept. 9 at her
parents' plantation in Kona.
Adding to the sweet scenario will
be the matron of honor, Aissa
Wayne, who was Luby's co-vic-
tim in that dastardly attack
directed by her ex-husband.
Thomas Glonl.s, seven years ago.
Best man will be Dr. Roy Hulse
of Palm Springs, who just aced
me out for the honor.
-Remember that Corona del
Mar fisherman who made a
small fortune (nearly $150) when
he snapped pictures last month
of a yacht burning at sea? Well,
he almost did it again over the
weekend. While motoring north
on the 405 Fearway. he wit·
nessed a five-car wreck. And
where was his camera? Neatly
tucked away in a back-seat bag.
Alas, he was told to keep mov-
ing. The good news: Everyone
survived the pile-up, and his
camera is now equipped with a
shoulder strap. They're_insepa-
rable. Our hero's name? Let's call
him Royal Disaster.
-It was triple-digit heat in the
desert Saturday, but a China
Cove couple (no names, please)
felt they had to attend a friend's
wedding in Sweaty Palm
Springs. They got there early.
Two weeks eaity to be exact.
Happy to report that the ride
home was much cooler. 1
-Suggestion of the week '•
comes from Martin Abramow-
ltch of Costa Mesa, who says he's
just trying to be helpful. His note:

He could carve out a whole

about that the other day, and a

Harbor View began the scrip

The PFO buys scrip certificates

sells them to parents who plan to

For example, the PFO might
buy a $iOO scrip certificate to
