treabnent.
When doctors Michael

Hoag will become the first
Orange County hospital to
offer this innovative knee car-
tilage transplant, which a
Hoag press release promises
will alleviate pain and restore
function to knees with carti-

The transpla.nt begins with
the collection of a small slice
of cartilage cells from a
healthy part of the patient's
knee. The cells are cultivated.
in: a lab for up to three weeks,
producing millions of new
cells, which are injected
directly into the injured area.
The technique, called Car-

high marks in several medical
journals.

At the urging of the Corona del

The Irvine Co. bas agreed to
rename its future 100,000-square-

identified as "Newport Pavilion·

·decided Friday. .
Stores in the new center will
contribute to Corona del Mar's
business improvement district, in
which merchants will charge
themselves to fun~ marketing
and promotion efforts. Chamber
officials are also hoping the stores
will bear the Corona del Mar zip
code.
Since June, chamber members
had lobbied to. name the center
atte r Corona del Mar and not
Newport Beach. Merchants have
also expressed concern that the
retail stores would fit in with
stores a1ong the Corona del Mar
strip.
The .Corona del Mar chamber
called an emergency meeting Fri-

need for a new name. Later Fri-
day they learned th!'lt their wish

"It makes a difference,• cham-

think anybody will contest it.·
Officials from The Irvine c:;o.
said the change was made out of
the company's desire to be 'a good
neighbor. Company officials
briefly debated whether it wouJd
be more difficuJt to market a
shopping center to retailer.; with
"Corona de! Mar" -a less wide-
ly recognizable name than "New-
port" -in the center's name.
Ultimately, that fear was dis-

Irvine Co. vice president of retail
operations.
"This will be more of a com

said. ~People who come here

Commodores Club updates its image with new neckwear
By Steve Marble, Daily Pilot
RT BEACH -The influential

past.
Actually, it's cut about 90 of them.
The long-fluttering gold, bllle and maroon
striped neckties that have been the official
neckwear for club members have been officially
shelved in favor of a more trendy dark blue tie
that sports a virtual color stew ol. unall sail·

•They were rotten, nasty and ugly to the
core,• club membet Danny Marcbeano said of the discarded neckties.
Still, the old standards have held up well
over the years. All 90 members of the club --;-a
businessmen's divisJpn of the Newport Harbor

we~ the ties at regular meetings, as well a.s at
the events they sponsor, such as the annual Cit-
1.zen ol the Year dinner and the yee,.:ly scholar-
ship breakfasts for top students.and athletes.
But as time passed, the old ties sort of lost
the& sparkle, Marcheano said.
Another problem was that club members
somettmei squabbled over whether the blue,
gold and maroon tn the tie was closer to the
USC or UCLA school colon.
•Also, they really showed off the dirt,• dub .

In a summary judgment

SHOCKING CHANGE IN ELECTRIC ISLAN D • There are so many controver-
sies today, it's difficult to know
what qualifies for dil ulcer or
merely a migraine.

The district and the

The BUDGET is the most per-
sonal and worrisome news. The
proposed cuts in Medicare make
me feel 1 should huny up and
get sick while the government
will still foot the bill. lt would be
just my luck to get an uninsured
ulcer.
As the Social Security debate

All these entitlement cuts are
In the McFadden era of New-
port Beach development, plans
were made to challenge the
shipping ports of San Pedro Bay
in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Mighty wharves were erivi-
sioned along the shores and in
the harbor. Electric Island; north
of Balboa Island, was first
planned as a SJte for docks and
warehouses.
By 1902. the McFaddens real-
ized that Newport would never
become a major shipping port
• and sold out their holdings. Elec-
tric Island remained undevel-
oped as it passed through the
hands of several owners.
In 1927 a Swiss architect,
Franz Herding, was hirea to plan
a residential development for the
island. Herding, familiar with the
French and Italian Rivieras, bit a
dlord that would be repeated
many times in Newport Beach
development -red tile roofs,
Mediterranean architecture.
He named the streets in Span-
ish, Italian and French, and cre-
ated a drive that encircled the
island. It was a beautiful plan for
vacation homes, but during the
Great Depression, no one was
really shopping for those luxu-
ries.
P.A. "Pappy" Palmer was
appointed sales agent for Udo
Isle by the Griffith Company in
1935. He recruited an able assis-
tant, Agnes Blomquist.
They not only made Udo Isle
a prestigfous address, they were
a part e>f the change from a
sleepy little town to a booming
city that occurred from 1936 to
1956.
Today, crossing the bridge that
connects Lido Isle to the Lido
Peninsula, a visitor finds a Euro-
pean ambiance in Franz Herd-
ing's vision, but the flavor of the
island is Newport Beach's best,
the dazzling harbor view, the
comfortable homes, the sailboats
pushed through the streets by
young sailors.
Pretty good for what was to b~
Electric Island, a jumble of ware-
houses and wharves.

KATSUYA RAINONE I DAILY PILOT
There's a lot more to Bill Workman's job than standing on the sidelines on game day. Workman ls ready to enter his 10th season as OCC's head football coach. •
• Orange Coast football coach, entering his 10th season at
the college, does a lot more than show up on game day.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
First in a senes
I t's a stop along the way to further
education, perhaps even football.
But more importantly, it's a
steppingstone across the stream to
adulthood and becoming civilized
members of society.
Bill Workman's greatest victories do
not show up in box scores and are
rarely printed m newspapers.
Those triumphs are achieved when
former Orange Coast College football
players, college degree in hand and
efficient m the real world, walk back
into his office and say thanks.
Workman, entenng his milestone
10th season as OCC's head coach, does
more away from the hash marks than
most realize.
Case in point. Keve Love, a talented
comerback from two seasons ago, came
back recently looking for help. When
the 1993 season had ended agamst
Antelope Valley, a fight broke out, and
Love was in the middle of it, apparently
an initiator. Workman was furious.
Nearly two years later, Love returned
to the warm confines of Orange Coast,
desiring to finish college and play
football somewhe re. He knocked on
Workman's door. Love is now back in
college ... and playing football this year
for Portland State.
•(Workman) doesn't hold any
grudges," said Mike Taylor, OCC
defensive coordinator, who has coached
under Workman for more yedI'S (12)
than any other assistant. "Bill had gone
out of tu.sway to talk to schools (about
Love). He does that as well as anybody.
He doesn't shortchange any players.•
There are times when even
Workman's assistan~ raise an eyebrow.
Taylor, who coached under Workman at
Edison High for three years (1977-79),
before arriving at OCC with him in
1986, has watched Workman take care
of tu.s players for a decade.
"There are kids sometimes when
people, or other coaches, have said
things like, ·1 wouldn't waste my time
with that . .guy,'" Taylor said. "But he'll
try to make amends and help
somebody, and it's all the way down the
board, not just starters. He's always
talking kids up. Nol that other coaches.
don't, but I think he does as good a job
as anybody. He's real persistent."
From tu.s rookie season in 1986 to
1994, Workman sent 155 players to
four-year schools to continue their
football careers, including 25 from 1993.
Only 21 of OCC's 98-man roster
were sophomores last y~df, led by
tailback Jeff Clayton, now in the first
huddle for the University of Texas.
"He goes out of his way to help kids
go on to four-year schools,• said George
Mattias, an OCC football assistant for
31 years, including eight with Workman
as an offensive line coach, before
retiring. "Some kids have gotten
overlooked some way, and I think kids
realize that, but he tries to help out all
he can, including getting them jobs if
he can. If you come to Orange Coast

and you're a decent football player -I
don't care if it's Division I. D1vis1on n or
Division ill -he's going to get them a
place to play.and continue their
education."
Workman reportedly has even
helped non-Orange Coast players get
scholarships through his vast spectrum
of four-year school connections.
Fans in the ~owd and those in the
press box rarely see the compassionate

"He's got a way with kids, or young
men, that makes people feel
comfortable," said Bruce Belcher,
current defensive coordinator for Edison

program for eight years, including two
on the varsity level in 1979 and 1980.
