Allen accepts· role as underdog
• Embattled speaker defends her record, plans fight against recall.
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Several weeks
ago, upon learning Dons Allen had
established her speakership office in
Newport Beach, I phoned directory assis-
tance and asked for the new office's num-
ber.
The name "Doris Allen• sparked the
interest of the Pacific Bell operator, who
asked me a question before giving me
the phone number.
·oh, do you like her?• the operator
asked. "I'm reading so much horrible
stuff that l can't help rooting for her. Sbe
seems like such ~ underdog."
When I related this anecdote to Allen,
the Assembly speaker laughed and
threw her hands in front of her face. •An
operator!" she says. "That's unreal.
"You know, I wish everybody reacted
that way because (the recall) is happen-
ing in my district. That's where it's all

Her weeklong stay in Orange County
is coming to an end, and the new speak-
er of the Assembly says she has barely
had time to wash her hair. During her
first week back since winning the speak-
ership, Allen bas met with constituents
and made several television appear-
ances.
She is also strategizing over how best
to combat a mounting recall effort gener-
ated from within her party.
Allen won the speakership by a one-
vote margin, gaining votes from every
Democratic legislator in a deal engi-

Brown. Allen cast the only GOP vote in
her favor.
Now Republican legislators m Orange
County are engineer:ing her recall, an

Aspiring teachers help kids tum over new leaf briefly in the news
• UCI teams up with latch-key program to open the
world of books to disadvantaged youth.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Piiot
COSTA MESA -Ten Costa
Mesa children are spending theiI'
summer at the library, honing
their reading skills, instead of rid-
ing their bikes, or playing at the
beach.
With a little help from a group
of UCl education students, the
youths are learning there's more
to reading than just schoolwork.
And some of them are just plain
learning to read.
"The kids l"ck a lot of
resources at home,• said Debbie
Gelfand, one of the five UCI stu-
dents working with the kids two
days a week at the Costa Mesa
Branch Llbrary. •A lot of them
don't have books at home.·
The children, who are all
between 5 and 10 years old, were
selected for the program through
Child's Pace, a latch-key program
for elementary and junior high
school youngsters.
"When (the UCI students)
came to me and asked me if there
was ~omething they could do, J
thought it was great," said J ohn
Levere, who heads Cb.ild's Pace .
But when they get to high school,
that's when it hits them -when
they can't get involved in sports
because their grades aren't high
enough."
The children began meeting
with the fU'St wave of UCI stu-
dents in July. The second group of
aspiring teachers took over two
weeks ago.
"They seem to be responding
to us,· Cammie Foley said. •As
they get to know us better, I think
their trust level improves, and
some sort of bonding or relation-
ship is formed.•
And library manager Marian-
na Hof said she sees a difference
in the children's attitudes.
"They seem very happy,• Hof
said. •They're enthusiastic about
learning and about the special
attention they're getting.•
"So many times with school-
age children, reading is associat-
ed with homework and studies,•
Hof said. "They haven't been
exposed to the real fun part of
reading -the joy of reading an
adventure book, a mystery or a
science fiction journey.•

Intrepid kayakers save beach from fiery doom
'f his is the tale of two
lawyers and~ newspaper
reporter and how we saved
Newport Beach.
Jt aU started one Sunday after-
noon when three friends, Rob,
Vladimir and Yours Truly an1ved
at the Newport Aquatics Center.
Although we had planned a
peaceful paddling adventure, I
was beginning to have my
doubts.
Rob -a lawyer involved in a
major trial -had spent the
weekend visiting my husband
and me, bemoaning the follow-
ing:
1. The stress involved in liti-
gation.
2. The death of Jerry Garda.
3. The lack of attractive, sin·
gle women in Porterville, where
he practices law.
Rob, admittedly one of my
best friends, was driving me crazy.
And when he wanted to bring
bis flip phone into the kayak
("Just in case my client needs to
reach me"), I rolled my eyes,
which he noticed.
Sighing, Rob left the flip
phone in the Audi.
Our afternoon adventure was
not getting off to a good start.
Rob, Vladimir (a lawyer from
Newport Beach) and I picked up
some kayaks, which cost $10 per
hour, and carried them to the
-water.
Rob and Vladimir, kayak vir·
gins, moved their paddles, awk-
wardly at first, then with increas-
ing confidence.
And although I had gone on a
prior kayak adventure, I could
not stop splashing gallons of
water into my lap.
Vladimir and Rob led the way
toward Coast Highway. I trailed.
Strenuous exercise, lapping
water and pretty scenery began
to have an effect on us. We
exchanged gOoct-natured taunts,
shared our bottled water and
adnu.red the finely crafted motor-
boats as they passed.
Suddenly, Rob shouted,
"Fire!" and paddled frantically
toward a lonely stretch of beach.
Vladimir and I followed,
beldtedly noticing flames ema·
nating from a burning telephone
book.
Rob leapt out of his kayak,
grabbed the water bottle and
doused the flames.
While Vladimir pointed out
burning embers, I flagged down
a motorboat and asked the peo·
ple on board to call the Harbor
Patrol.
They said their phone wasn't
working but promised to stop by
the stat.ton and alert the
deputies. (As an aside: the peo-
pie on board the motorboat
apparently failed to contact the
Harbor Patrol. Therefore, there is
no official record of a fire in the
Upper Bay on Sunday.)
I paddled back to the beach,
Rob sifted th.rough the remclll\S, ·
discovering a fish skeleton.
At that moment, l felt l.Jke a
darn good citizen. Thanks to
Rob's alertness, we prevented a
fire. More likely than not, the
names would have simply d.Jed
out without causing any ma1or
damage, but you never know rt
~ould have been the fire that
burned down Newport Beclch
I patted Rob on the back He

EventuaUy, the bird found a

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Minney has a particular
fondness fnr schooners. His
father, local legend George Min·
ney, owned a 65-foot dark green
schooner Kelpie.
George Minney took his wife
and five children on many sailing
ventures, including a yearlong
venture to the Marquesses, Tahlb
and Hawaii. Minney has good
memories of those days.
So be decided to buy another
schooner upon which his family
could play, so about eight years
ago, Minney took ownership of
the Samarang.
Minney and brothers Owen
and Joe often sail aboard the
Samarang together.
"~still ti:ivin~ oor child-
hood out," Owen Minney said.
The family especially e njoys
the Samarang's cozy deck and
leak interior.
"She's got a timeless style,"
said Owen Minney, 52. •And a

Whittier, but the connection between
alumni was strong. Their paths would
cross later in a rather peculiar way.
Workman, who considered himself
"an average player,• coached at
California High for one year following
his graduation from Whittier.
After leaving Cal High , where
Workman did his student teaching, be
returned to Whittier College, taking
over as head coach of the freshmen
Poets, while studying in a masters
program there.
Eventually, he worked his way up to
the varsity as the backfield coach,
finishing his masters in education,
before movmg on to East LA College,
where Workman was the secondary
coach in 1970.
Fate struck in 1971, when "Willie"
was seeking a change.
"I was having my truces done, and I
ran into (Asaro), who was the head
coach a{ Edison,• Workman said. "He
was a little older, but I knew him. He
came out of the tax office as I was going
in. He asked, 'Hey, what are you doing?'
"I said I was kind of looking around,
and he said that he might have an
offensive coordinator's job. and would I
be interested in coming down to
H untington Beach. I said, 'Heck, yeah.'"
gave me a scholarship out of high
school, then he left (for the NFL), then
my sophomore year Don Coryell was
the coach,• said Vince Asaro, the fomier
Edison High coach, who would later be
replaced by Workman in 1973. "There
must have been 15 or so guys off that
team whb started coaching in Orange
County.•
The late Allen was Whittier's coach
•John Godfrey and Don Coryell
knew Bill and recommended him," said
Asaro, who stepped down to become
Edison's defensive coordinator in 1973,
