Let's build a memorial
for Officf!r Bob Henry
There are a number of
things that need to be tak-
en care of while I'm gone
on vacation (Conway, Ark. -
don't ask). In no particular order:
• We need a local memorial
for Ottlcer 'Bob Henry and other
fallen police and heroes. I think
that some where on the Cast-
aways bluff overlooking New-
port Harbor would be appropri-
ate. It's an inspiring place and
near whe re Bob He nry was slain
earlier this year. The memorial
would contain a short, inspiring
message and then list the police
officers and firefighters from
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
who have been killed in the line
of duty. 1 And hopefully, we would nev-
er have to add anyone to the list
after Bob Henry's name.
Only three things are needed
to get the memorial in place:
Money. I talked with police
supporter Bill Voit who said he
would he lp raise the money for
the memorial, I imagine this
community could raise enough
money for 20 memorials. So no
problem there.
fermJaion. The city of New-
port Beach would have to grant
permission for such a memorial
on the blufftop and also deter-
mine the exact location. This
should be put on the...nut pos11i-
ble City Council agenda. I bet
Mayor John Hedges would do
this.
Dest!Jll. Hold a nationwide
contest. Offer a free trip to New-
port Beach to the winner. Ros-
alind Williams, executive direc-
tor of the Newport Beach Con-
ference and Visitors Bureau, is
pretty good at this sort of thing.
Sbe could wot.k something out.
And if we raise more money
than needed for the memorial,
then the rest can go as prize
money for the design wilµl er.
~ with many people in the
community, Officer Henry's
death touched me with unex-
pected depth. Maybe because
Newport-Mesa seems immune to
~ kind of tragedy. Perhaps
because he was a young father,
too. Or possibly because the
whole episode seemed so utterly
senseless.
Whatever the case, I find
myself thihking about Officer
Henry and his family quite a bit.
. This memorial. high atop the
Castaways, would be a nice
place to visit, to mourn, to pay
tribute.

Coun~il to vote on dogs on beach ban
• Local pet owners hope their dogged campaign to
allow Fido op the sands will prove successful tonight.
By Evan Hener.son, Daify Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Dog
lovers are hoping tonight will be
liberation day for their beach-lov-
ing bow-wows.
The City Council will consider
a proposal to lift a summer beach
ban and permit dogs on city
beaches before 9 a.m. and after 5
p.~. from June 15 to Sept. 15.
Currently, dogs are not allowed
on the beaches at any time during
the summer months, but they can
be on the beaches before 9 and
after 5 p .m. during the rest of the
year.
Earlier this' summer, several
residents petitioned the city~
Parks, Beaches -and Recreation
Commission to change the regu-
lations. The beaches belong to the
residents as well as the tourists,
dog owners argued, and home-
owners should be peqnitted to
walk their dogs on beaches dur-
ing the summer.
Marine department and ani-
mal control officers countered
that the ordinance is designed to
keep the beaches dean during
the busy tourist season. Too many
dog owners do not dean up after
their dogs, city officials main-
tained.

•Newport and Costa Mesa businesses plug into the
Internet hoping to find a whole new line of customers.
By Bob Page, Daify Pilot
Many Costa Mesa and New-

you. and many others, will begin
shopping on the Internet within
the next few years. ~
They have erected storefronts -I
along the Information Superhigh· i
way in recent months, trying to
entice some of the tens oJi millions
of consumers worldwide who are
online to buy their products.
While they admit the number
of purchases they've received
from the Internet is small, busi-
ness ·owners would rather talk
about the great opportunities Ute
future holds.
~It's the wave of the future,"
said Shane Coderre, who owns
Anabolic Chem Labs in Newport

people it reaclies for the amount
of money it costs was reason-
able.·
Coderre said Ute response to
his company's three-week-old
World Wide Web site has been
OK. He has received eight to 10
orders for Boron Stero Complex.
which he calls a safe. affordable
steroid alternative and sells for
about $20 for an eight-week sup·
ply. Coderre pays $100 a month to
a friend , who recently started an
Internet-support business, to
maintain and advertise his Web
site.
For Cbcierre, Drew Hibbert's
Costa Mesa company lnter-
Sphere created a simple World

Family, sinking boat
saved by Harbor Patrol
By Bob Page, Daify Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -For a
Trabuco Canyon family. two
Orange County Sheriff's Harbor
Patrol deputies were in the right
place at the right time Saturday
afternoon.
James Molter, his wife Betty,
brother Jeff and 1-year-old son
Slava had been cruising off the
Newport coast about fow hours
when the wake of a passing ves-
sel broke over the bow of their 16-
foot boat, causing it to start sink·
ing.
Patrolling 9ff the beach at
Corona Del Mar, deputies George
Patterson and Mike Millard heard
the family's distress call -Betty
Molter was laying on Ute horn -
and spotted them waving their
anns.
The deputies pulled up along
side the Molte r's boat near the
mouth of the harbor just as it cap·
sized. They plucked the family
from the sea without injury and
saved the small boat as well,
tying a line to it shortly after 2
p.m.
~It really was amazing," Betty
Molter said Sunday. "We weren't
in the water very long.~
She added that the family sus-
pected a leak in their boat was
responsible for the accident. She.
said they were already riding low
in the water when the wake!
crashed over the front of the boat.

t'OSl of televising the Newport-

of 'IhlJtees' meetingii has finally
been calculated: $165 per meeting

Small price for democracy.
Three quick points.
No. 1: Parents, teachers and

No. 2: Though its natural incli-

And No. 3: The price -$165 per

argue cost is an issue. If anyone
does. just point out that last year
the district spent hundreds more

Newport, girls volleyball team loses • 10 players from national ti.tie squad
---
t - -- -....._
•After winning
everything in sight last
season, Newport girls
volleyball team won't be
counted out this year,
despite losing 10 players.
By Richard Dunn. Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The
last Newport Harbor High girls
volleyball sighting was Dec. 3 at
Cal State Fullerton in the CIF
State Division I final.
Along with a state champi-
onship, the USA Today national
title was on.the line.
It was a clean-and-jerk lift.'
Only a trace of St. Mary's was
remained, after Newport Harbor
shredded the Stockton-based
Ra.ID$ in a three-game sweep for
the State Division I banner, the
school's second state title in three
years (the Sailors won a Division
llI championship in 1992).
The Sailors bad also been to
the Stale Division I title match in
1993, losing to cross-town rival
Corona del Mar in a memorable
season finale, the fourth time
that year CdM and Newport
Harbor me.t.
Last year was the climax.
But the highly decorated
Sc1ilors, using Misty May, Melis-
sa Schutz and Sara Fal;Fbom in
those championship years, enter
a brand new era in 1995, the
PMP, or Post-May Period.
