This i's the only time of the day parents and kids have a chance to exchange complaints, griev- ances and even compliments. Moms and dads preside as judges, leaving their brood to plea-bargain their cases, an excellent training for trial lawyers and politicians. A notable example are the Kennedys, who remember with affection the long and lively discussions around the dinner table as part of their chHdhood education. Frequently, current events are included in the conversa- tional muc by Dad, who valiantly tries to interest his kids in w hat's going on in the world -besides the skate- boarding contest at the high school. 1100KING . BACK With the focus on family values today, you'd think din- mg with the kids would be a sacred ritual. but the recent architectural trend pomts in a diffe rent direction. In the new suburban ho mes being built, the living and dming room Meds have s hrunk to the size of a small lobby, while the Hfam1ly room H has e xpanded dramatically into the largest room m the house -big enough to accommodate a huge. wide-screen television set dnd a gaggle of hypno- tized mouth-breathers. Newport's first high school principal cultivated district's roots T he most-watched place in Newport Beach begin- ning June 16, 1930, was a 20-acre parcel of former Irvine Co. farmland at 15th and Irvine streets. There, after a nine-year struggle to establish a local high school district, Newport Harbor High School was becoming a reality. A bill passed by the slate legislature in 1929 allowed the area to withdraw from the San- ta Ana School District and become the Newport Harbor Union School District, serving the stud~ts of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. The first school board consisted of Leroy P. Anderson, Judge Donald J . Dodge, Dr. F.C. Ferry, Mrs. A.P. Nelson and Theodore Robins. Sydney H. Davidsqn, who was at the time vice prmcipal of Huntington Beach High School, became Newport's first high .school principal. He worked the first seven months without pay and is credited with the pdssage of a $410,000 bond measure in 1929 which made construction of the school possible in those Depression days. He also helped architect Herbert Powell design the dis- tinctive tower that is a nautical landmark. Davidson was principal and superintendent from ,1929 to 1958. The school's athletic field is named in his memory. He died at the age of 94 tn 1990. The school opened to 178 students in September 1930 and was formally dedicated in 1931. Today, the Newport-Mesa School District is served by four The nveting eye of televi- sion 11> transforming families into a passive and mute soci- ety. Couch potatoes are multi· plying faster than the length of the sofas. At least the din- ing room table provided Dad with a pulpit where he held forth over a captive audience and an adoring wife. From now on, kids will get their advice on the tube from Mr. Rogers and Big Bird. Was it a cover-upf Not really. Seems police were summoned in the early morning hours because of loud gunshots heard in the neighborhood. When they arrived, they found well-known saloon keeper Max Dillman still holding the smoking gun. . Also found was the body of the victim, a raccoon. Seems Dillman had grown weary of nocturnal marauders, such as the aforementioned marrunal, raiding the fishpond behind his home. So he lay in wait (ain't that premeditation?) and blasted away with a 20· gauge shotgun. The intruder was about to devour one of Dillman's pet koi when its protector uncorked the · salvo. The carp was still strug- gling, so Dillman uncorked a sec- ond blast. Accordmg to callers, there wasn't enough left of the preda· tor to make a coonskin cap. The fish, reportedly. !tlso failed to sur- vive the carnage. Schuster said the pregame focus was a stark contrast to last season. ·1n order to get the kind of inten- sity I'm after, the kids have to be willing to give of themselves and focus on their jobs," Schuster said. "They can't be involved with all the other stuff going on around them. "We didn't have that kind of focus last year. Those guys wanted loud music playing in the locker room before the game and they would be dancing, joking around, and even snapping each other with towels when they should have been getting ready for the game. As much as I tried to explain, they didn't undt>r- stand that those things were distract- ing them from preparing for their job. The only way you gel any better, is to focus on what you need to do. "Now, I think the kids have seen an example of what intensity can do for you. We just have to keep bwld- ing week-to-week. H The Sea Kings, with their first debut victory since 1992, opened construction on solid offensive foun- dation, ripping through Marina's defense so effectively on the ground, Schuster found it difficult to fuUill his intention to show off an improved aerial attack. because we just needed to see some things from our kids." What he saw was a 6-for-13 pass- ing performance from senior quar- terback Josh Walz and three catches for 49 '{1i rds t?y untested senior receiver 1)'ler Stonebreaker. "Josh really did a good job of staying within the framework of the offense,· Schuster said. •He did his job, dilected the offense, and made sure everything flowed. He allowed the rest of the team to play around him, which made him more effec- tive." The much-heralded offensive line also lived up to its billing, with junior Tate Luesebrink starting his first var- sity game, before veteran Kevin Stu- art took over at right tackle for most of the second half. Schuster also praised the block- ing of fullback Scott Shimer for help- ing contribute to O'Meara's impres- sive starting debut. Defensively, praise was also plen- 1.lf ul from Schuster, who singled out Conway, a senior tackle, end Jeff Bogdan, linebackers Richy Nichols and Ryan Crogan. and secondary members Ryan Bums, Trevor Pdvone, Chris Wills and Ryan Coop- er. r---------------------------~ I I I I I I I I I I I OPENERS + 1962 -CdM 0, Aviation 24 • 1963.
