T be day Doris Allen
resigned her speakership. I
was supposed to have
lunch with two of her staff mem-
bers. At their invitation. lbe sub-
ject was "where thing$ stand

a.m. to contiiin our noon
appoinbnent, aide Steve Brody
said, "I think we'd better take a
rain check. How are things
going with you?"
Allen a~ated a few hours
later.
I didn't know the resignation
was in the works, but the cancel-
lation didn't surprise me. Noth-
mg Allen or her staffers can do
will ever surprise me. I've been
to their house, so to speak. I've
seen bow they do business.
And I'm still scratching my
head.
The looniness began with my
r~est for an interview with the
new speaker. The 67th Assembly
District doesn't cover Newport
Beach or Costa Mesa, so Doris
Allen and all of her juicy contro-
versy really aren't in the Daily
Pilot's playing field. However,
Ex-Speaker Allen had the good
sense to open up her Southern
California speaker's office in
Republican-heavy Newport .
Beach. Considering her relation-
ship with the GOP, that's a little
bit like a T-bone steak taking up
residence in a wolf colony.
But I digress. Allen had set up
camp in our area, and I wanted
to interview her in her new
office.
Days before her first extended
VlSit to Orange County, I called
the Allen camp and asked for an
interview. Her staff members
were very accommodating. They
promised to set me up. The
speaker would be busy, but they -.
would try really hard to make it
work.
And they were true to their
word. A few days later, I got a
call from an aide who scheduled
me an interview. Later that same
day, a second aide called to
scheduie a different interview,

COSTA MESA -Christmas
tree and fireworks vendors may
find it's too expensive to do busi-
ness lil the city if the City Council
approves a new public service fee
schedule.
The proposed list of fees
includes a $65 bike to the current
$150 charge for obtaining a fire-
works stand permit. And, it rec-
ommends more than doubling
the cost of Christmas tree lot per-
mits, boosting the fee from its
current $55 to $115.
Other proposed fee adjust-
ments include a new $3 charge
for certification of documents
from the City Clerk's Office and
an $80 hike to the current $125
Fire Department false alarm fee.
City staff is also suggesting the
council approve increases to sev-
eral youth sports and day-care
programs. Under the proposed
fee schedule, summer and winter
youth camp costs jump $10,
bnnging the fees up to $95 and
$85 per person per week, respec-
tively. Spring camp costs would
hop up to $95 per person per
week, representing a $20
increase.

Stereotypes overshadow
vit,aJ,, diverse populatiOO.
Old age ls not a nation-
ality. We have no nag
or national anthem by
Lawrence Welk. Still,
young people view us as a
separate race where wrinkles
and jowls distinguish us from
the rest of the population as
does our native dress: print
dresses and orthopedic shoes
for the ladies and golf hats
and bolo ties for gentlemen.
However, these stereo-
types only belong to a small
segment of the population.
It's difficult to dispel the myth
that all old people are the
same, but we're more diverse
in lifestyle and personality
than any other age group.
Visit any large. bustling
city like New York, and you'll
be astonished at the number
of older professionals still
working in key jobs and
enjoying stimulating and pro-
ductive careers. At cocktail
parties, generations mingle
casually with more interest in
discussing politics or busi-
ness than swapping ailments.
Also defying aging are
those creative kiddies who
regard growing old as a mere
nuisance and are still com-
posing, writing and painting
with the help of a kindly
muse. Talent endures longer
than your waistline.
Speaking of a young out-
look, let's not forget those
vigorous and adventurous
scientists like Jacques
Cousteau, who is still explor-
ing marine life in his 80s.
Even the political game
has its risk-takers, like Bob
Dole, who is seeking the
presidency at 70 when many
men are sacked out in a
hammock.
Retirement is a man-made
invention that doesn't work
for many. No other creature
on Earth spends about a third
of his life trying to find a
compelling interest outside C1f
swinging a golf club.
There's another flock of
rebels called the refuse-niks
who accept age but not the
restrictions. While our step
slows, hearing dims and
jowls droop. we believe it's
only a contrivance of Father
Time to make us accept our
years.
As president of the local
chapter, we hold weekly
meetings to explore the vari-
ous ways our members can
keep their youthful spirit.
One woman in her 60s was
the oldest woman to sail a
boat to Honolulu by herself,
Another grand.ma enrolled in
a law school at 75 to handle
her own legal affairs.
One word of warning,
however. Marrying a
younger man is no solution.
A gallon of hormone cream
and a sense of humor work
far better.

Schoolrooms
by the shore
I n 1894, the children of New-
port Beach had their first
schoolhouse, and the Newport
Beach Grammar School District
was founded. The town was built
around McFadden's Wharf, which
had changed the tiny fishing vil-
lage into a busy shipping port,
and newcomers began to settle.
The first schoolhouse was a
small one-room wooden cottage
at the comer of 19th Street 4nd
Court Avenue near the pier. It
was built at no cost to the commu-
nity. The McFadden brothers
donated the materials, and local
residents donated their labor.
Until it was finished. the 18 New-
port students and their teacher,
Miss Emma Moore, held classes
in a 20th Stree\ cottage donated
by the owners of Hill Hardware.
By 1905, enrollment had
increased to 43 students, and the
little school was too overcrowded
to continue. A $5,000 bond issue
was passed, and a new building
was constructed on the ocean
front near the pier, a block away
from the old school. This building
had two classrooms and accom-
modated students of the area until
1912, when the number of school-
age children reached 100.
In 1912, a $27,000 bond issue
was appro~ed bJ. a vote of 108-10,
and the present site of Newport I
Elementary School was acquired.

Bone-dry humorists take a cue from dumped fossils
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
For a pair of Orange Coast Col-
lege students, the 7th annual
Taste of Newport proved the ideal
setting to complete a class project.
After obtaining permission
from event sponsors, Scott Cain
and Brian Of<=4icek. both of Hunt-
ington Beach, set up their Beta·
cam and began polling anybody
who agreed to appear on camera.
"It's for our Electronic Field
Production class,• said Cain, 19.
"It's designed to get students into
the public, to feel more comfort-
able about approaching people. r
guess it takes a lot to go up and
ask a stranger for an interview.•
Cain and Ofcacek, 20, were
each assigned a question. The two
students would each poll 12 peo-
ple and record the answers on
film. Later, they would edit the
replies into a single "man·on-the-
street" sequence.
Other students in the class
were asked to poll respondents on
subjects ranging from life in
Orange County to community col-
lege tees to the United States' role
in Bosnia.
Cain and Ofcacek's questions:
What steps have you taken to pre-
pare for a major earthquake? and
What advice would you give Pres·
ident Clinton on ninning the
country?
And the answers were enlight-
ening, Cain said.
·On the earthquake question, a
lot of people said they've done
nothing," Cain 'said. ·Others have
their kits or their water stored up.
I'd say it's 50% prepared and 50%
unprepared."
-Whep,,~1pbout Clinton , responc:tenls 'fiee~e more wag-
gish. •"f•a;..
"So far we've gotten two
responses," Cain said. "People
either tell Clinton not to run again
in 1996 or else they say, 'I didn't
know Bill Clinton WAS running
the country.'"
Others bad more specific
advice. "Bill Clinton should stick
tb what he says a bout health
reform,• said one woman.
• 1nstead of always going about
things in a round-about way."
Another, who h eld a young
child while being interviewed ,
suggested that the President and
Hilary Clinton should "take care
of seniots.•
"We're all g oing to be there
eventually," she said. "Give them
the respect they deserve."

Most analysts agree
financial markets will be ,,.
characterized by significant
levels of volatility during the
months ahe.ad. How will this
affect the timing of your
investments?
According to Chicago's
Ibbotson Associates, your
asset allocation decision will
have a far greater impact on
returns than either market
timing or securities selection.
So, forget market timing and
focus on the long-term
picture instead.

investment ideas and

EGGING
YOUR CAR ON?
At one time or another. we all
probably have noticed the smell
of "rotten eggs·· from a passing
car or one in a parking garage
This sulfur odor emerges from
the tail pipe due to hydrqgen
sulfide in the car's exhaust gas-
es. This condition. in tum. is the
result of an overly ennched fuel
mixture Simply put. the engine
is receiving too much fuel 1n
proportion to the amount of air
that it is getting The problem
behind all this may be as easy
to isolate as insp~ct1ng for a
clogged air filter. Those who are
conscientious enough about
their car maintenance will be
rewarded with never having to
encounter this problem Those
who fall to correct it once it
occurs face the poss1b11ity that
their catalytic converters might
fail · an expensive oversight.
HINT: A car with a failed
catalytic converter 1s not likely to

Orange County in sooring aver-

to make it bard for the Corona del

Estancia is up
front over its
recent success
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
• 1hings are going right,
and Joe Flores figures to
be back in the hunt soon
after some good news.
COSTA MESA -Sure, the
Estancia High football team is 2-0
for the first time since 1991, com-
ing off a 28-0 thumping of La
Quinta, while making good on its
desire to complement a smash-
mouth running attack with e
quick-strike passing game. But
the Eagles have their problems
.too.
"Frough (Jahid, a two-time
All-Pacific Coast League safety)
was telling me Friday he feels
like he isn't contributing, because
he's not making enough tackles,"
Eagles Coach John Llebengood
said.
"I told him 'That's how it's sup-
posed to work. If he's making all
the tackles, then there's some-
thing wrong up front.• "
To be sure, little is wrong up
front, or anywhere else for the
Eagles, who also received good
news regarding injuries.
Junior outside linebacker and
backup fullback Taleni Tanielu,
who left the La Quinta game
before halftime with what was
thought to be broken nose. mere-
ly suffered a bruise. He'll return
this week.
. Furthermore, the right shoul-
der injury to starting fullback and
defensive end Joe Flores, who
has five sacks in two games. was
not a separation but a "stinger,"
according to Llebengood.
The Eagles, however, will be
without the services of junior
lineman Alfred Tanielu, who dis-
covered a broken metacarpal
bone in bis right hand between
the first two games. and might
miss another couple of weeks.
Week two, following a 12-7 tri-
umph over Cypress, brought the
offensive balance Llebengood
believes will come in handy
against future foes.
Alter misfiring on all three
pass attempts in the opener,
junior quarterback Jeff Perry
completed two of three, both for
touchdowns of 26 and 72 yards,
respectively, to Taleni Tanielu
and Chris Felix.
"With this type of offense,
defensive people are_~~~g to be
anxious to come up ~stop the
run.• Uebengood said. That is
going to aeate opportunittes for
~eivers to get open. Jeff
showed the other night be can
get them the ball, and they
showed they can catch it.•
But CdM Coach Mark Schus-
ter seems to have little difficulty,
and he's confident he can instill
this lack of complacency into his
players.
"I've always told the kids, 'If
you're ever satisfied, you're
dead,• • said Schuster, who
admitted there was little to be dis-
pleased with, particularly offen-
sively, in the dismantling of the
Argonauts.
"It's hard to be dissatisfied
when you complete 14 of 14 pass-
es, but there are plenty of areas
we can improve,• added Schus-
ter, who cited the Argos' lone
scoring march, which ate nearly
10 minutes off the clock, at the top
of such a list.
!W . . . . . f . ... ' ' '·' . ' .. • • • \ -• , • . )1
"It's hard to begrudge Garden
Grove, because it put the drive
together, but
from a coach·
ing standpoint,
that indicates
to me that our
kids let up,•
Schuster
explained.
"And we don't
want our kids
to have an atti-
tude that we're
ever so l1ood, B clan
we can let up. og
"That drive
(with the second-half kickoff) cost
us a shutout, and it cost us the
chance to give some kids an
Schaumburg
opportunity to
play more than
they did,"
Schuster said.
Offensively,
Schuster has to
be much more
selective in
pointing out
miscues.
"That was
the offense at
its best,• be
said. ·we did
about what
we'd hoped to do by rushing for
more than 200 yards · (206) and
throwing for another 250. ~e
offense has worked like this,
terms of taking what the defe
gave us, at Azusa. But (Azusa)
was never as polished as we were
the other night, because it didn't
have the type of athletes we have.
"The neat thing was, we had
two quarterbacks (starter Josh
Walz and Mike McClellan) have
success, we bad a couple three
tailbacks have success, a couple
fullbacks run the ball well, our
receivers were running good
routes, and our line did a great job
on protection," Schuster contin-
ued. "But when everyone bas
success like that, it means you're
not playing a team that's your
ailors feel they've returned to the family of past eras

COSTA MESA -Orange Coast
College's football team bas a
w.eek off after just two weeks into "'
the 1995 season, and it must be a
welcome notion for Pirates Coach
Bill Workman, who watched his
team absorb its second straight
loss Saturday night before some
1,700 in its home opener.
Cerritos College's Falcons
were the beneficiary of the
Pirates' gifts, and combined it
wlth their own efficiency to record
a 28-14 victory, ignited by a 28-0
halftime lead.
Jn the aftermath Workman
received his obligatory consola-
tion from Cerritos coaches after
the two teams bad virtually dead-
locked in terms of sheer yardage.
Oh, sixth-ranked Cerritos had
its problems, too, but the Pirates
appear to be head and shoulders
above the field in discovering
ways to deny themselves victory.
MWe fumble and we lose the
ball. Other teams fumble and they
recover the ball,• said Workman,
who at least on the surface
seemed to be able to swallow it.
Maybe that's because it's not
exactly something foreign.

Newport is one-up on rival CdM
II.That's the consolation for Sailors
after dropping out in semifinals of
Orange County Championships.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
HUNTINGTON BEACH -Equabty has
finally arrived for Orange County girls vol-
leyball.
Dominated the past three years by New-
port Harbor and Corona del Mar high
schools, the county is seeing light at the end
of the Back Bay tunnel.
Accord.mg to the coaches, any of seven
county teams could challenge for the ClF
Southern Section Division I title in Novem-
ber.
For an early-season appraisaJ of who's
who this autumn, the best teams came
together in the Orange County C hampi-
onships, with the semifinals and finals at
Edison High, where defending champion
Newport Harbor was knocked off by Mate r
Dei, 15-12, 15-7, in Saturday's semifinals.
Earlier, the Sailors defeated Corona del
Mar, 5-15, 15-5, 15-10, in the quarterfinals.
#That's somebody we don't want to play
in this tourname nt, because we see them in
league,• Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn
said of the Sea Kings. Mlt was a typical Coro-
na-Ne wport match. lp the first game, they
killed us, and in the second game, we killed
them. The third game wasn't that good, but
Corona sure looked good in the tourna-
ment."
CdM, which won a playoff in its pool
against Dana Hills on Friday, defeated Mari-
na in the first round Saturday in the Divtsion
I bracket, 15-8, 15-6, before faang Newport
Harbor, the defending CW State Division I
and USA Today national champions.
KATSUYA RAlNONE I DAILY P!LOT
Newport's Joanna Fielde r goes up.
"The first two games were basically com-
plete mirrors of each other," CdM Coach
Brian Chartier said. "We served tough and
took them out of the flow. then m the second
game, they did the same Uung to us. We had
some chances there in the second game to
convert some points, which would've
changed the momentwn, but we never took
advantage of the opportunity."
Huntington Beach defeated Dana Hills m
the other semifinal, then swept Mater Dei in
the btle match, 15-7, 15-2, sconng the last 11
points without a s1deout
Newport Harbor. which beat Bishop I
Montgomery m the first round Saturday, led
in the brst game, 12-4, against Mater Dei,
ranked No. 2 t.n the Ordnge County coaches'
preseason poll.
But the Monarchs, behind seruor outside
hitter Roberta Gehlke, one of five returning
starters for Mater Dei, came back and scored
11 unanswered points against a visibly tired
Sailor team
Gehlke had 11 of her match-high 19 kills
in the first game, whlle 6-foot-2 middle
blocker Nicole Noya had five kills.
Joanna Fielder, a 6-2 junior. led the Tars
with six kills m the game. Laura Wilson, who
had four kills and two blocks, teamed with
Julie Hecke r on a block to give the Sailors
their ~ight-point edge.
"We shouldn't have let that first game get
away,• said Glenn, whose squad will host
Mater Dei in a nonleague match on Tuesday
(6:15 p.m.).
In the second game, following a kill by
Melissa Snow, an ace by Wilson, an
unforced error on Mater Dei and a kill by
Fielder, Newport Harbor had a 5-2 lead.
But once again, Mater Dei came back, Uus
time behind Gehlke and 6-1 sophomore
Amy DeCinces (six kills 10 the match),
whose perfect set allowed Am1 Orr to give
Mater De1 its first lead, 7-6. on a kill.
DeCinces, of Corona deJ Mar, also served an
ace for mdtch point.
"I think we broke down with our passing,
but we've got some youngsters.· Glenn
said. ·we got tired and (Gehlke) stepped up
and played great.
"There are a lot of even teams Uus year, and
I think Mater Dei right now is a little better
than us. Corona and us are even, and Hunt-
10gton Beach is a little better.·
Chartier echoed Glenn's thoughts. "There
are several teams thdt could step up toward
the end of the year and win (CfF Division [)
and do really well,· he said "There are
about a half-dozen teams out there that are
pretty eve nly matched."
