NEWPORT BEACH -Despite
extensive research and e nvtron-

Irvine Ranch Water DlStrict will
have a difficult time selling a con·
troversial wetlands imgation pro·
ject to residents here.
A team of water distnct consul·

The district's proposaJ. to imgate

reclaimed waste water, would
cause five million gallons d day of
treated waste water to dlsch drge
into the San Diego Creek and
uJtunately mto Newport Bay.
While the water district's envi·

'says the project would neither
increase the bay's nutrient level
nor pose any health threat to bay
users, Newport Beach residents
remain unconvinced. Anything
less than 100% assurance puts
the city's most valuable resource

No acrounting for taste
in the world <if musi.c
I ~e;
kept
pace with
my peers in
terms of
music.
Many of the
troubadours
of my youth,
like Bob
Dylan, Jimi
Hendrix and
Janis Joplin,
left me feel-
ing sort of
melancholy
peggy
normandin
and out of step with my generation. But I
never told anybody.
I'll bet I even looked like I was having
fun dancing in the eighth grade to those
intolerably long sets of "Llght My Fire:· the
song that never ended; the song that had
no rhythm; the song that made my skin
itch; the song that nearly drove me to the
nearest polka parlor. Man, I bated that
s(mg. But I never told anybody. U!ttil now.
: Now, I'm a grown woman and feel no
sbame or embarrassment in admitting my
musical idiosyncrasies. Today. when peo-
ple come to my house, they axe forced to
~ten to the music I like; collections from
tl)e Kingston Trio, Frank Sinatra, Bobby
Damn. Paul Simon and Smokey Robinson.
I memorize the words to country western
songs and hum along to commercial jin-
gles. I love the sound of a marching band
playing fight songs and enjoy almost any
kind of ethnic music: Hawaiian, African,
Irish and Cre!lJe. Sometimes, I even tune
to one of the Mexican radio stations and
turn it up really loud because I like the
rhythm. But I wouldn't tell anybody.
It should come as no surprise, then, that
my three sons gravitate toward the uncon-
ventional when it comes to music. One of
the first CD's they claimed for their own
was a gem at our local library: "16 Tons of
F)m, Tennessee Ernie Ford's Greatest Hits."
Tpey were drawn to the cover art which
sh.Owed a photograph of the singer's head
Pii;sted atop a dwarfed cartoon drawing of a
hillbilly body. "This bas gotta be great,"
Frankie and Nick agreed smiling at the
illustration.
They played it day and night for one sol-
id week and anyone who walked through
our doors got an earful of "Shotgun
Boogey" and "Mr. and Mississippi." The
melodies suited their raucous dispositions
but when I found the behavior getting a lit-
Oe too back woods, I suggested we return it
and check out a new musical attitude.
The next CD we came home with was
I lenry Mancini's "Pink Panther" anthology.
It was fun, but the y returned it for Ten-
11essee Ernie Ford. We sampled "TV
Theme Songs," "The Best of the Village
People" and "West Side Story." But. still,
• 16 Tons of Fun" became our family sound-
track for 1994.
My sister Mary Lynne who has what I
would describe as near perfect musical
instincts (except for the time she took my
mother to a Manhattan Transfer concert)
changed the tide when she gave the boys a
CD of "Harry Belafonte Pure Gold " for
Christmas. This magical collection of
Calypso beat folk songs including his con-
tagious "Banana Boat" won the boys over
instantly. Even my husband Jim who rarely
strays from Dick Dale found himself jump-
ing in our afternoon conga line. But, of
course, he wouldn't admit that to anybody.
I suppose it won't be long now before
Ol!f sons are answering to the musical dic-
ta~ of their generation and disregarding
{be rhythms they were drawn to as chil-
~en. We'll try to keep an open mind.
Wben I hear the modem options available ~:teen-agers today, I actually start to get
~gic about the sounds of Van Morrison
iQld Jerry Garcia. Maybe it's because I'm
~yond adolescent peer pressure or maybe
l~t because I don't have to dance to it any-
more.
Nevertheless, I find myself becoming a
latent Rolling Stones fan. Their song,
"Start Me Up" which underscores
Mlcrosoft's latest commercial for Windows
'95 has me running to the TV and cranking
up the volume. Yeah, but you'll never
catch me admitting that to anybody.

Avoid customs problemS, tuck a smoked salmon under your arm
I am not a acofllaw. I am not
an up-to-date Fagin. Never-
theless, if anyone wishes to
avold a hassle with customs offi-
dals, l have a three-word sug-.
gestion -smoked lrish salmon.
Several yea.rs ago, my wi!e
and I were returning home from
a trip to Europe. Our plane land-
ed in Shannon, Ireland. Now, if
you've been there, you know
that the Shannon aiJport is one
great big shopping center. So,
naturally, all the other passen-
gers were buying Irish lace or
Irish linen or whatev~r one buys
in Ireland.
Not being a shopper but wish-
ing to gel into the swing of
things, I went to the bar and
began to drink Irish coffee.
After a couple of hours, it
came time to board the plane. I
decided to become a conformist
and buy something Irish. I
bought a loaf of Irish bread and a
very large slab of smelly smoked
Irish salmon ~apped in a news-
paper.
1Tansporting a large smelly
piece of smoked Irish salmon on
a plane presents difficulties. The
stewardess won't take it. Also, it's
too large lo put under the seal or
robert
gardner
in the overhead compartment. So
1 simply held it on my lap, much
to the distress of my wife and
surrounding passengers.
Our port of entry was Detroit,
which had an ominous reputa-
tion as having the toughest crew
of customs inspectors in the
country. They lived up to their
reputations. As we went through
the ~toms inspection lines, they
did everything but strip search
my fellow passengers.
As I stood in line, I was having
trouble with my belongings. It's
hard to carry a loal of Irish bread,
a slab of smoked Irish salmon, a
handbag and a suitcase all at the
same time. So I put the bag and
suitcase on the ground and was
just ldcking them along in the
line to the customs inspectors.
l had been watching my par·
ticular inspector. He was obvi-
ously the meanest of the bunch.
When I reached his counter, I
slapped my smoked Irish salmon
down together with my loaf of
Irish bread and reached down to
pick up my bag and suitcase to
put them on the counter.
The customs inspector looked
at my smoked Irish salmon and
leaped back as though I had put
a hooded cobra in front of him.
"What the hell is this?• be
screamed, at the same time hold-
ing his nose. That's hard to do,
scream and hold your nose at the
same time. He did it.
"It's a piece of smoked Irish
salmon," I responded cheerily
while breathing Irish coffee on
him. "I've declared it. See?
Mere." I waved my customs dec-
laration at him.
•Gel out of here," he yelled.
I started to pick up my bag
and suitcase to put them on the
counter.
District cleared of bias against
special education students
• Federal government
finds in Newport-Mesa's
favor in 1994 complaint
by parent.
By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Piiot
NEWPORT-MESA -School
district officials have been cleared
of allegedly discriminating
against special education stu-
dents by segregating some at
Marion Parsons Special Educa-
tion Center or by allotting them a
shorter class schedule than regu-
lar students, according to the U.S.
Department of Educdtion.
In June 1994, aa unnamed
Newport-Mesa parent filed a
complaint with the department's
Office for Civil Rights, alleging
the school district placed students
with disabilities at Parsons with-
out adequate individual justifica-
tion and the students at Parsons
ettend a shorter day than students
at regular district schools without
adequate justification.
The complaint also alleged the
Orange County Office of Educa-
tion, which instructs some severe-
ly disabled Newport-Mesa stu-
dents, did the same. 1
"ln this case, it was a matter of
the Office of Civil Rights coming
down to look·into a complaint and
finding we were in compliance,•
Newport-Mesa Superintendent
Mac Bernd said.
While the civil nghts office
found the district 1ustified in plac-
ing students at Parsons and in
shortening the school day by
about 30 mmutes, 1t stressed the
need for Newport-Mesa to take a
more active role in the education
of its students enrolled in the
county's special education class-
es.
"The district will need to con-
tinue to work together with the
(Orange County Office of Educa·
tion) to ensure that e'ach child is
educated with students without
disabilities to the maxunum
extent appropriate to his or her
individual needs," the report said.
The district signed an agree-

ment last month pronusmg to
clean up some of its special edu-
cation procedures and sent a copy
of the revised procedures to the
civil rights office last month.
The district agreed to review
all school day schedules for New-
port-Mesa students in Orange
County of Education classes and
to make sure each length is suit-
able for each individual special
education student.
By February 1996, the district
will report on its progress to the
civil rights office.

Believe it or not,· Bethel College

ooE~N. •
Bethel, an NAlA school in McKen-
zie, Tenn., with an enrollment of only
470 students, got more air time than
Deion Sanders that catastrophic night.
It was a slow night in sports ... a
Thursday, when virtually nobody else
played in college or pro football . It was
the night after Cal Ripken Jr. broke
Lou Gehrig's consecutive
games-played record.
It was a "money game," according
to Bethel Coach Ralph Ferguson. "Our
program got $12,000 to go play it." he
said, •and (Tennessee-Martin) is only
20 miles up the
road."
Final score:
Tennessee-Martin
97, Bethel 7.
·By the end of the
first quarter, when it
was 28-0, then I
knew it was going to
be a long night for
them,• said
Tennessee-Martin
quarterback Todd
Mather, one of four
Orange Coast
College products
who played for the
Skyhawks in their
record-setting
performance.
"I've had all kinds
of radio talk-show
people calling," lIT
Martin Coach Don
Mc Leary said. "I got
roasted in several talk shows for
running the score up. It's hard
playing (Bethel), because everybody
expects you to beat them, and if you
don't beat them soundly, you're not
very gooa, and if they win, then that's
real bad for you. So you really can't
win."
M ather completed his first 11
passes, finishing the first half 11
of 12 for 182 passing yards and two
touchdowns.
on the 1-yard line. Field position
killed them, and they hurt themselves
d lot. It was totally unbellevable. It
seemed like every time we got the
ball, it was boom, boom, in the end
zone.·
Bethel's ·wlldcats scored therr only
touchdown on a kickoff return. They
actually won the game's
time-of-possession battle, 30:28 to
29:32.
But in-a nonco.n.fer.enc~ game that
induced statisticians to research the
most lopsided college football game in
history (Georgia Tech defeated
Cumberland, 222-0, in 1916), you cdn
bet that Ferguson and his program
would someday love to get revenge
"They were definitely (running up
the score),· Ferguson said. "They ,
throw a 30-ya.rd touchdown pa.ss when
it was 83-7 with their first unit dt1d hvc
minutes left 10 the game.
"But we're going to get this
program off the ground. Give us three
years. We're going to tackle them
again, and we're going to be pretty
good in another year. We'll be good m
our league
(Mid-South
Conference), and 10
three years, I'll tackle
those suckers
again."
O f Bethel's 65

traveled to Martin

"The same team that scored the

Ferguson said. "It was just men

lIT Martin won the pregame coin
flip and deferred to the second half,
but Bethel elected to kick off to start
the game, rather than receive, giving
the Skyhawks the ball to start both
halves.
