NEWPORT BEACH -The
death of a 28-year-old Newport

acddent Wednesday shocked his
colleagues, who heralded him as
• an outstanding pilot.
The wreckage of the Bell 206L1
LongRanger helicopter and the
body of its pilot, 28-year-old
Hanspeter Karl Guggisberg, were
discovered by rescue workers
around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday
about one mile southeast of Loma

to an Orange County Fire Authori-

"It was a big shock to all of us
here because he's such a good

Lackey, who was Guggisberg's

City to regulat~

NEWPORT BEACH -The
future of hauling trash here may
get very expensive for small
haulers.
Those who want to continue
serving local businesses will have
to accept a new set of city-
imposed conditions. They will
also likely have to obta.m indem-

age of gross monthly receipts to
the city as pdrt of a new franchise
agreement.
Faced W1th nsmg landfill costs

pass increases on to its residents,
the City Council has authorized

lection.
The franchise' agreement
would basically place urulorm

haulers who currently do busi-

Mesa Unified School District offi-
cials have mailed out about 125
letters to East Side residents living
near Undbergh School, informing
them of current lease negotiations
for the site with the Orange Coun-
ty Department of Education.
•we want (the residents) to
know when they can visit the
county programs and when we'll
be scheduling meetings, so they
can participate,• Newport-Mesa
School Superintendent Mac
Bernd said. "Secondly, we want to
give as much factual infonnation
as we can to clear up any miscon-
ceptions they might have.•
Some East Side residents are
concerned over the pending
move, saying the programs that
currently run out of the Bear
Street School might not be com-
patible with the Lindbergh neigh-
borhood.
Residents worry such programs
as the Horizon alternative educa-
tion center for at-risk teens and
day-care and after-school centers
might create traffic, parking and
noise problems in the area. Other
programs housed at the Bear
Street site that are being consid-
ered for the move include admin-
istrative offices for outdoor educa-
tion and migrant worker educa-
tion programs.
In an effort to ease their con-
cerns about the programs, the dis-
trict and county have organized a
series of open houses at the Bear
Street site at 3100 Bear St.
The next and final open house
will be from 10 a.m. to noon Oct.
4. Later that day, at 7 p.m., the dis-
trict will hold a question-and-
answer session on the matter in
the multipurpose room at Kaiser
School. 2130 Santa Ana Ave.
On Thursday, Lindbergh
School area resident Ann Dunle-
vie said the information she
received from the district did
address many of the concerns
expressed by neighbors. But, she
said, she's still not convinced the
district has all the answers.
"They're trying to put them-
selves in the best possible light
without having to give real infor-
mation,• Dunlevie said. • .. .It
could be a fine thing that they're
putting in there. But we've
learned from our past experience
that we· need to find out as much
about the plans as we can in order
to help shape them."

When Davis started looking
for an appropriate act for the

Skiles now lives in Pt. Wayne,

Davis said the two were

agreeing to cut their "tee in

happy it's not going to be let

the council considered clo lng

the Thunderbird is frequently
the site of overcrowding, fights

"We'll contmue to m onl\or

N~wport Beach Sgt. And y

The mghtclub's predecessor,

revoke its permit. When new
ownership came in, the city
agreed to stay the revocation for
six months to let the new tenant
build a more favorable reputa-

City Attorney Bob Burnham
would not say whether the new
emphasis has caused the rau-

did say, however, the nig ht
club's new pldns meet the mod -

The council plans to take
final public testimony Monday
and will make its final decision

In the past. Mulholland has
complainl:!d his club's use permit
was overly restrictive and
accused the Police Department
of hounding his busmess.
Reached Thursday. hP changed
his tune, praising the city and
the police for their generosity.

power to revoke the individual's

• The district commences its

investigation warrants it, there is a
recommendation for termination,
and the employee is notified.

possession, and then drove to
first-and-goal at the 3 before turn-
ing the ball over on downs. A
short pass from quarterback
David Delany to Grant Estabrook
set up the Irish first-and -goal,
with Neil Poster, Andy Kalanz
and center Brandon Black provid-
ing strong blocking up front.
The failed drive set the tone as
South Bay jumped out to a 12-0
halftime lead and then capitalized
on five second-half Irish fumbles
to put the game away.
