Room 27 at Ensign Middle

charged with suspense just
before 10 a.m. Tuesday as
the seventh-grade students
leaned forward, eyes glued
to the large television set,
and waited for the verdict.
Amid the circus-like
atmosphere that has sur-
rounded the trial of The
People vs. 0.J. Simpson,
school Principal Scott
Parlsen wanted the stu-
dents in the language arts
class to remember the hor-
rible crimes, not the
hoopla.
"You don't cheer, you
don't shout," Parlsen
warned. "This is a murder
case -it's not a football

At 10:02 a.m., Los Ange-

Judge Lance Ito asked
Simpson to face the jury.
Then the words ·not

Students' mouths
dropped, eyebrows raised.
Wide-eyed looks were
exchanged -but silence
prevailed until teacher
Sandy Asper told them it
was OK to talk.

While all eyes remained

Up to the moment the

Then, seconds after the

: NEWPORT BEACH -Tues-
day morning when Ron and Kurt
Jl,scherman's building contractor
excavated a decayed fragment
o'f. a h_wnan jawbone, the father
and son struggled for an hour to
~ecide whether they should call
police.
: ·1 thought maybe it was
someone's grandpa,· Kurt
-1scherman said. "I felt bad. Or
}'OU see these shows where
$others are looking for their
kids -you feel sorry for them."
: Ascherman's argument to dis-
cover the unknown finally won
qver his father, who agreed that
Newport Beach police sh ould
C,ome and check out the bone.
• u I should have 'stuck it in a
t1ole, because nothing will come
of this,• said Ron Ascherman,
51taking his head as he looked at
the unfinished parking lot where
~onstruction is now halted. "It
will just delay our building.•
; At 10 a.m. Tuesday. while
oontractors were digging a new
narking lot behind the pair's
aqua-phonics business at 2537 W. Coast Highway, they uncov-

notified of the finding and
reportedly has 48 hours to send
representatives to survey the
site where the bone was discov-
ered. Until they arrive, the bone
is in the care of the Newport
Beach Police Department.
U the bone is found to be
insignificant, the construction of
the parking lot can con\i.riue, the
deputy coroner said. If it is
deemed important, the Ameri-
can Indians have the right to
take the bone and bury it on
holy ground and summon an
archaeologist to look for more
remains, she added.
Walter Jorgensen, who has
owned the land that faces the
bay since 1950, said the dirt
where the bone was found is fill
dirt brought to the site between
1933 and 1940, possibly from a
hillside where it had been for "a
1,000 years before that."
Until the origin of the bone is
known, plans for a new parking
lot at Aqua-Ponies Brew and
Grow -a business that sells
water systems that also allow
homemade beer brewing -are
on hold.
"It really is fouling us up.·
said Jorgensen. "We ran into a
boar's nest.

Cashing in on Simpson Verdict
G ueu who elH bu culled
In on the Simpson trial -
Just before The Verdict
was rendered Tuesday, my book-
ie, who will be unnamed here
(for tax reasons) offered to wager
$5 against my $2 that O.J. Simp-
son would be found guilty.
Wow, an investment opportu-
nity like this comes only once in
a lifetime. I mean, it's not the
money, it's the action.
Well, as some of you may
have heard by now, my usually
shrewd oddsmaker lost the bet.
even though we shared disbelief
over the fast verdict. Not guilty is
not guilty, and I can use the five
bucks.
And now the really bad news.
It's generally recognized that
grisly murder has been perpe-
trated upon Nicole Brown Slmp·
son and Ron Goldman. Which
means we're still wondering
whodunit.
There must be a monstrous
killer still lurking out there some-
where.

"I'm too old to participate in such

"Now I don't have to have my

Reflecting back on the whole

said. "But because it's O.J ., he

taxpayers' money and time.·
Given the nature of the defense,
how could anybody reach another
conclusion, Morgan said .
"There were nine black jurors.

racial issue rather than a trial of

Added Med.hat, "I can't help

How could anyone overcome
such a thing? Yet, they are set-
tled, they have ·a home, they
have love and care. What I
dread most ls for their lives to
be disrupted.
"The positive slde -there is
a great deal of love, and care
and involvement. They are
doing OK. They know what's
going on, and they are OK.•
Simpson's older children -
Arnelle and Jason -have
stayed in the lives of the Brown
family as well, despite their
outspoken belief in their
father's innocence. "We are all
friends, we are still family,"
Brown said.
In recent months, however,
the visits have been fewer.
•Jason loves bis father very
much, yet he is very angry with
him,• said Brown, who believes
the anger flows from the over-
whelming emotions of the trial.
"Guilty or innocent, how can
one not be angry, especially a
child who has idolized a father
as a national hero."
One of Brown's closest confi-
dants during the trial has been
Judy Manto, a 20-year friend
who turned to Brown whe n
tragedy struck h er own family.
Manto lost her own son in an
auto dccident, and Brown was
al her side. And now the roles
are reversed. '
"My husband, Carmelo, was
10 the study when we got the
news dbout Nicole last year,"
Manto recalled. "He picked up
a photo of O.J_ and Nicole that
was on d table. and he flung it
dcroi.s the room.·
Moments later, she said, he
suffered a massive cerebral
hemorrhage and wa ru bed to
Hoag Hospital, where he clung
to life. Carmelo Manto sur-
vived, and the experience
cemented the Brown-Manto
friendship. Manto bas held
Brown's arm from arrest to ver-
dict, at home and in Judge Ito's
courtroom.
"We take We one day at a
time," Brown said.
The two will join forces
again Oct. 15 when Carmelo's

A little more than a year ago,
the Estancia High football team
was growing weary of reading
about a losing streak that
extended to nine games after a
season-opening l~ Cypress.
The skein was the
third-longest in Orange County
at the ti.me, before a victory over
La Quinta knocked the
ill-humored monkey off the
Eagles' collective back.
Currently riding a four-game
winning streak, the school's first
4-0 start since 1989, the Eagles
may take pleasure in knowing
only two county teams (Mater
Dei and Santa Margarita) have
won more consecutive games. a
The Newport-Mesa Dtstrlct
record for consecutive varsity
football wins is 16 by Newport
Harbor, which rolled the table
last season en route to a ClF
Southern Section Division V title.
The excitement created by the
1994 dream season has spawned
an unusually high turnout on this
year's freshmen team. which saw
· its typical 30-player roster more
than double.
The subsequent equipment
demand created a financial strain
on the program. but a recent
corporate donation will go a long
way toward allowing the newest
members of the long gray line to
"strap it on~ in style.

fake punt by the lnsh gamed 20
yards lo the Ram 45-yard line,
before moving the ball to the S
and being stopped.
The Irish struggled in the red
zone throughout.
The Irish defense held the Ram
ground game to limited yardage,
but gave up big pass plays that
made the difference.
Defensive tackles Brandon
Black and Joe Kallab ·kept the
pressure on for four quarters.
The lnsb made a last-minute
attempt to get on the scoreboard,
when linebacker Todd Duddridge
mdde a funous hit on a Ram run-
rung back on fourth down, giving
the lnsh possession.
With time runrung out, a balf-
bdck pdss to Scott Tippett in the
end zone was batted away.
The Irish travel to Orange this
Saturday at 7 p.m.

You wouldn't know it from the
score, but the Newport-Mesa
Buffaloes played one of their best
games of the season Saturday
agamst a superior Norwalk-Santa
Fe Spnngs team in a losing effort
(25-0).
Blocking from offensive line-
me n Chad Smith, Brad Rothwell.
Allen Saenz and Travis Trimble
opened large holes ·in the Nor-
Wdlk-Sanla Fe Springs Saints
de fense, allowing Dayne Pfaff,
Chns Mandenno, Matt Moore,
Drew Hoeven and Nick Stroffe to
scrdmble for large gains from
scnmmage.
The Buffaloes, however, were
unable to sustain their drives
because of turnovers and penal-
tie~.
Buffalo pass coverage by
Stroffe and Moore was outstand-
ing, llmiting the Saints to only one
complebon. Pfaff intercepted a
swing pass behind the line of
scrimmage wtth nothing but day-
light between himself and the
goal line, but the speedy Saints
w ere able to catch bun before be
reached paydlrt
Moore played well at free safe-
ty, while filling m for Greg Stam-
pley, who broke his wrist in the
first half. Andy Rankin and Man-
derino bad their best perfor-
mances of the season on defense.
Inside hnebacker Saenz deliv-
ered some hard tuts on the Saint
running bdCks.
On speaal teams, Manderino
blocked a Saints punt that was
recovered by Stroffe, while punt
re turn special.tst Eric Snell did a
good JOb of getting positive
yardage on the few punts the
Sdints were forced to make.
