The well-known cosmetics

to stop violence against women.
Over the next two weeks, stores
will devote window and mer-

Store officials will also
encourage customers to sign

The Body Shop actually start-

MONDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1995
From the middle of nowhere
to the middle of everything
I n 1961, George Buccola completed con-
struction on Newport's first quality hotel
known as the Newporter Inn, in an emp-
ty field behind the Newport Dunes recre-
ational area and next to a little-traveled
road called Jamboree. He hired Don Daley,
general manager of the Balboa Bay Club, to
run his new business ventw'e.
At first, its out of the way location was
puzzling to residents and visitors alike, but
the hotel became a part of the rapidly
expanding Newport Beach "atmosphere•
and was known later as the Newport
Resort. Across the road, the towers of New-
port Center began to rise behind the now
lushly landscaped golf course at the Irvine
Coast Country Club.
The Newporter enjoyed a political hey-
day during the Nixon administration when
Newport Beach became an "in" destination
for those seeking favor at the designated
Western White House at the Newporter
Resort. The luxurious Newporter villas
were occupied by such luminaries as Hen-
ry Kissinger and Leonid Breshrtev. And as
the Watergate wave began to break,
Martha Mitchell was held incommunicado
from the press in a Newporter Resort villa
as her husband, John Mitchell, bead of
Nixon's campaign for re-election, was
involved in plans that put the coverup in
motion only hours after the Watergate
break-in.
Ownership of the inn bas changed sev-
eral times. For many years, it was known as
Del Webb's Newporter Inn. In 1986, Colum-
bia Savings Westgroup completed a $25
million renovation, which added another
100 rooms, bringing the total to 410 rooms,
three swimming pools and three spas.
Today, the handsome Mission-style inn
sits in a prune Newport Beach location,
enjoying the status of Newport's first luxury
hotel.

Sullens -who considers the

Brad Long worked five months to put Orange Coast College and its programs on video tape -
and he finished the project $400 under the projected $5,000 budget.
Harbor Court has seen a
nurn~r of criminals gomg to
prison for longer periods of time
because of the new law, he said,
but it is still too early to see
whether the offenders will
repeat.
Costa Mesa police Sgt. Tom
Winter, an officer for 20 years,
believes the Jaw bas a signifi-
cant impact on deterring repeat
offender criminals and is, there-
fore. a big help to law enforce-

Sakai said while many crimi-
nals are aware of the three-
strikes law, it isn't a deterrent
because there are many compli-
cated factors and reasons a per-
son repeatedly commits crimes.

SANTAANA -
It is a game of fan·
tasy, this 48·
minute span of
blood, sweat and
tears that every
high school football
player partidpates in.
Oh, the aches and pains, the
joy and frustrations are real
enough.
But it's still a fantasy which
every player entertains, playing
for No. 1, playing for team and
coach, playing for the pride it
instills in mom and dad.
That's what Costa Mesa High
quarterback Chris Mokede was
doing Saturday night. He was
playing for mom and dad.
And, with his teammates, he
came out a 22-0 winner over the
Saints of Santa Ana at the Santa
Ana Bowl in a nonleague game.
Victory improved the Mus-
tangs' record to 3-2 as they gird
for Pacific Coast League play this
week, and all cylinders appear in
order after junior tailback Ray
Ohrel ran for 166 yards, scoring
twice from 1 yards out, as well as
hauling in a pass from Mokede
at the 4-yard line, then slipping
into the end zone to complete a
40-yard scoring play with 10 sec-
onds left in the half. ·
For Mokede, however, the
realization of the fantasy will
never be more in focus than it
was Saturday night.
·It was for my mom," said the
5-foot-11, 175-pound junior with
a shaking voice, hls uniform
soaked with the sweat of the fan·
tasy, his face covered with tears
as he surrendered to reality.
He had completed 5 of 11
passes for 72 yards in the first
half as Mesa moved out to a
dominating 20-0 lead.
He had averaged 10 yards per
carry on the ground -30 yards on
three scrambles.
He had found Ohrel at the 4
with the deep
pass and sec-
onds fading
from the sec-
ond -quarter
clock.
He had
through the
night as the end
of a three•year
fight came to a
conclusion.
Mike Mokede,
Chris' dad, moved the .__._ ....... ..._ ______________ ...,.. missed the offense from
one end of the field to the other
with the efficiency one expects
from a starter. And be had kept
his bead in the game.
But when it was over, reality
overtook him and tears were
floWing as he buried his head
into the crevice of a sympathiz-
ing shoulder.
His teammates were slowly
leaving the turf, moments which
are usually known for their slap-
happy. winning attitude. It's part
of the ritual which comes with
winning.
Chris Mokede didn't take tha t

Coach Jerry Howell's Mus-

the game from start to finish,

defensive lineman
Morin, 6-foot-3 and 245
pounds, was tangled up
with 5-foot-6, 145-pound
offensive guard
Emmanuel Avina.
Both were ejected.
Steve Herzog, Jeremy
Jebangiri, Jeremy
Lefever, Kurtis Van
Hom and the entire
defense were dominat-
ing factozs. The Saints
were 0-for-everything
in the passing game, in
Morin to his ultimate
frustration, Avina to a
hero's welcome on the
Cbris Mokede Santa Ana sidelines,
addition to two interceptions.
And Ob.rel. who had runs of 12.
14, 12, 18. 12, 15, 9, 9, 9 and 8
yards among his relentless
attack, gave the Saints no rl!lief
at all.
0
Santa Ana was ineffective in
every department but one.
The Saints eliminated Mus·
tangs lineman Jason Morin in
the first quarter in a scene remi-
niscent of the film M ·A· S • H.
Santa Ana's Robinson burst
loose for a 15-yard gain at the
start of the Saints' second posses-
sion, trailing 7-0.
But some five yards behind
where he happily dis·
played to his teammates how it
was done.
Showing two "shadow upper-
cuts," than motioning a headlock
"grip," the sequence showed
how he was able to get the for-
midable Mustang out of the
game. The refs, seeing Morin at
the end of the scene, decided to
eject both players.
0
In terms of the overall result,
however, it meant little as Mesa
showed just what happens when
you have size, strength, sheer
talent ... and heart, on your side.
Toni Mokede died Sunday
morning, just after daybreak.

COSTA MESA -
With a name like

why he can play
football in a league
of his own.
In a Mission Con-

Saturday night, with plenty of
firsts for Orange Coast College,
freshman tailback William
League accentuated the host
Pirates' initial victory of the sea-
son, a 31-28 nail-biter over district
rival Golden West.
Going from worst to first in one
night, the Bucs are 1-0 in Central

first three games, and yes, there
was even chatter about playing in
a postseason bowl game.

What do you bid now?
A • This question is similar to the
first. North has shown a slam.going
hand and a selr-suslaining spade
suit. With an attractive collection of
prime cards and a heart awl that
could be a source of tricks, the obvi-
ous move is to show your club
strength. Bid four clubs.

Whet do you bid now?
A • South's 17 high-card point.a do
not nccurat.ely renect the strength
of the hand -those four points in
the red suits might be worthless!
Under the circum"tltanoea, do not
feel it incumbent to bid any more
than three clubs now.
