.Water employee ·arrested while driving agency truck
•Off-duty worker was head ed to company picnic when DUI arrest was made.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -A Mesa
Consolidated Water District
employee was arrested on sus-
picion of driving under the
influe nce while heading to a
company picnic in Huntington
Beach in one of the agency's
trucks.
The employee, whose name
was withheld by water district
officials, was pulled over Sept.
30 by a Huntington Beach
police officer. He and another
employee who was a passenger
in the truck have been placed
on p aid administrative leave
pending the outcome of a dis-
trict investigation, Mesa
spokeswoman Mary Urashima
said.
The district did not say
whether alcohol or drugs were
suspected in the arrest. A copy
of the arrest report was not
immedia tely available.
•District policy does not
allow or condone the consump-.
lion of alcohol or controlled sub-
stances in the work place,"
Urashima said, adding that nei-
ther man was on duty at the
time the truck "{dS pulled over.
Urashima said the two men
had been #delivering supp~es
and things• to the picnic, which
was at Edison Park.
"' lt was an. agency event,"
Urashima said. "But I want to
make it clear that alcoh ol was
not consumed or served at the
event."
Urashima said the district is
investigating the matter and
will be contacting the Hunting-
ton Beach Police Department to
obtain copies of the officer's
report on the mc1dent. Once the
matter hds been reviewed,
Urashima said district officials
will decide what, if any, discipli-
nary action should be taken.
Meanwhile, district board
President Trudy Ohlig on Mon-
day expressed concern over this
latest blow to the embattled
agency In recent months, the
r district bas fallen under harsh
criticism from residents who say
they're concerned about. man-
agement practices and spend-
ing, among other things.
"11 never just rains, it pours,•
Ohllg said. "I'm very disap-
pointed about this, but we do
have to go through due process.
"We have to wall to bear the
outcome of the investigation
and review the reports and then
deode what to do next."

Simpson trial .asks whos
playing with q, fall deck
TOBY WEISSMANN
--
Dedicated to helping those with extra challenges ·
L et me see lf I remember this
correctly. Robert Shapiro said
Johnnie Cochran played the
•race cant· Cochran said he was
really playing the •credibility
card" but discouraged Simpson
from taking the stand because he
feared Marcia Oark would play
the ·domestic discord card." What
have these guys been doing for
the last nine months? Playing
cards? No wonder the trial took so
long.
And, yet, I can't quite put my
finger on the game. It sounds a lit·
tle bit like Fish. You know, where
one player asks the other player if
he has a card in a given suit. For
example, maybe Barry Scheck
would ask Chris Darden if he had
any "DNA cards" and Darden
would respond by saying, "No,
Barry, go fish." Or words to that
effect. Then, the player who ftnaJJy
scores a pair, like Cochran's "TWin
Demons of Deception,· wins.
Our family loves rutitless card
games, so I tried to find out more
about 1l in our official book of
Hoyle's Rules for Card Games,
Second Revised Edition.The d os·
est description r could find wds a
game called "I Doubt It" Here's
what the book said about it:
"After each play, any player
may say "I doubt it." If several
players call "I doubt it," the fol-
lowing rules should be strictly
enforced: 1) The first to doubt
takes precedence when his lead
over the second doubter is clear. 2)
When none bas a clear lead in
being the first lo doubt, the
doubter nearest the player's left in
rotation has precedence. 3) The
one who first gets rid of all his
cards wins the game He (the win·
ner) always puts his last batch of
cards face up. because everybody
is bound to doubt him. Plan to be
#honest• in your last five or six
turns, and, therefore. do all your
"cheating" early "
Sound familiar? And that's
accord.mg to Hoyle.
But. then, I was thinking,
ma ybe these are actuaJJy d unique
brand of trading cards. My boys
are nuts about speoalty trading
cards, so I started domg a little
phone research to locate a set I
caJJed one of our local comic book
retailers.
"Do you carry these new tn-
bunal trading cards?" l asked.
(
-'·· .. -
peggy
normandin
"I don't follow you," the voice
on the other end said.
"You know, these are the cards
all those Simpson attorneys were
swapping between trial testimony.
Each one features a character flaw
that might be held against some-
one in a court of law. We're talking
'domestic discord,' 'race discrimi-
nation,' 'the seven deadly sins,'
'the seven faces of Eve.' You know
what I mean.•
"You've lost me."
"I'll bet they even list interest-
ing stats on the back of the card.
For instance, famous defendants
acquitted or convicted of a crime
related to, let's say, 'fraud.' I reaJJy
hope there's one on 'gambling' in
the starter se"t because my boys
would Jove to have some sports
celebrities in their collection.·
"Lady, get yottrself some help."
Click.
OK, so maybe what we have
here are courtroom credit cards
used to acquire a given attitude or
attribute that might further your
case. Can't you picture one of the
attorneys saying, "Your honor, I
find myself in need of some public
trust. Can you put it on my
'integrity card?"'
"I'm sorry. barrister, but your
credit in that department is over-
drawn at the moment."
l don't want these cards hang-
mg around our home. They might
give our boys the wrong impres-
sion about jurisprudence. After aJJ,
the American justice system does
deserve to be treated Wlth more
respect than a house of cards.

AN EAST COAST TRANSPlANT
Weissmann, 44, was born and
raised in the Bronx, N.Y. She
attended the Ugbt House nurs-
ery school and the New York
Institute for the Blind.
Much of Weissmann's educa-
tion was focused on music. She
took. classes in piano, music the-
ory, music appreciation, compos-
ing and violin, among others.
. In the mid-1970s, Weissmann
and her late father moved from
New York to La Habra.
uwe decided to move here
because QI better services for the
disabled and the blind and
because of a better climate,"
Weissmann said.
She moved from La Habra to
Costa Mesa in 1979, then to
Huntington Beach, and finally
back to Costa Mesa and into her
current apartment in Harbor Vil-
lage in 1987.
Weissmann's home is close to
Orange Coast College, where
she has taken computer classes
and other general education
classes during the last couple of
years. Earlier, she was a student
at the Braille Institute for the
Blind in Anaheim for about four
years, taking classes in poetry,
typing, handwriting, home man-
agement and other subjects for
independence.
Weissmann has also worked
at sever~ jobs.
"Most of the~ have involved

"I've sold light bulbs, llash-

As·the program chairwoman for
the group, Weissmann arranges
for camps for'the d:i5a})led.
And as a member of the Jew-

Steffensen: A city pioneer with
a magical grasp on Lady Luck
Les Steffensen ls a remark-
able man. He has made
many contributions to the
community. He is a witty, delight-
ful companion and a good friend.
However, be has certain powers
only I know of. Those powers are
nothing less than supernatural.
Probably Les' outstanding con-
tribution to our community was
helping give Newport Beach its
City Charter.
Dora Hill, one of the great lead-
ers of this community and the
city's first woman mayor, called for
an election of a Board of Freehold-
ers to draft a City Charter, and
Les was chairman of that group. It
had two primary goals, to do away
with the possibility of one small
group from one part of town run-
ning the town -which had been
our history up until that time -and
to provide for a city manager.
Under Les' leadership, the
boa.rd drafted a City Charter that
provided for seven rather than five
City Council members and that
while the whole city would vote
for each candidate, they had to
come from various geographicdl
parts of town.
Thus a small group from one
part of town could no longer elect
council members all from one pdrt
of town. The charter also provided
for a city manager type of govern-
ment, thus dragging the oty into
confomuty with other progress1Vl',
well-run oties. Micromanaging

the city by individual council
members was a thing of the past.
So, too, was maclune politics.
Les did much the same thing,
or at least tned to do the same
thing. for the county of Orange. I
appointed Les to be chairman of
one of my grand Jwies Under bis
leadership, the grand Jury recom-
mended to the Board of Supervi-
sors that it hirt a county manager.
Thus, Les followed the lead of a
prior grand jury Jed by Braden
Finch that had made the same
recommendation. Unfortunately._
the board wouldn't follow either
Jury's advtce. They we nt dS far as
hinng a county adrrurustratJve offi-
cer but not a county manager.
They wouldn't gwe up their pow-
er to nucromanage county d.ff~.
Had the board hired a real
county manager, the flnanaal
debacle of 199-&-1995 would
undoubtedJy have been avoaded.
Those are just two of Les Stet-
fensen's many contributions to the
con:ununity. However, there is a
side to Les that only I know.
For many years, Les and I
played goU at the old C~ Coun-
try Club, now the Newport Beach
Country Club.
After each game, we followed
the usual practice of ddJourning to
the locker room to. shdke dice for
drinks. And there Ll was that I saw
Les Steffensen's supernatural
powers m action.
I would be ahead in whatever
game it was. slup. cdptain and
crew or aces. Les would need a
certain number lo beat me.
"Judge, you don't believe aoy-
one can control the dice, do you?"
Les would SdY
Me, crossly "Of course nol
When you roll the dice out of that
cup. it's a matter of blind tuck how
they come up "
Les would then pick up the
dice cup, wlusper something into
it, put the cup to his ear as though
liste~g to an dDSwer. then roll
out exactly the number to wm.
U this had happened only a few
times, I would have thought he

According to Dale Nichols, prin-

"There WdS really no turmng point in the
season,• Gdlf satd. •All year long. we had
confidence m each other and the desire to
win as a tedll\. What happened was that we
had the nght combination of players from
Orange County . a few guys out of Los
Angeles County high schools ... and we all
got together in those years and it just
happened. It was kind of magical"
It was, indeed, like magic.
There was talent on that team. White, "now
1 the head football coach at Edison, was an
outstanding quarterback, th.rowing four
touchdown passes of 58 yards or more, two to
Steve Adams (Estancia). He led the South
Coast Conference in passing yards (1,495}
and total offense (1 ,588).
Accomando established several offensive
school records that held for years, including
single-season and career scoring and
rushing standards.
2 behind Eric Washington (1991-92) for the
highest per-carry average at 5.9.
Accomando n~ver spiked the ball, never
dld the shuffle. It was only class when he
scored one lus record 29 touchdowns.
Accomando that season led the South
Coast Conference in rushing yards (1 ,087),
the only conference player to gain more than
1.000. and rushing touchdowns (20).
H is nearest competitor had five rushing
touchdowns.
Kicker Woody Tressler and offensive
tackle Jack Clark also earned All-American
honors that season.
"It was one of those teams where you
couldn't find any we~esses, • Tucker said.
"Our kicker averaged only 34 yards a kick,
but he kicked so high, the balls were hard to
handle, then they dropped a bunch of them .
Those balls were hard to catch. Woody
'Ifessler really had a great year. H games
were closer, he would've had more
opportunities for field goals. He might have
been the best kicker we've ever had here.
Probably every bit as good as Benny
Ricardo (former OCC and NFL kicker)."
•
A 6-foot-3,
215-pound
junior outside
linebacker, he
was in on eight
tackles,
continuing his
growth as a
first-year varsity
performer. • ·we never really had a test,· Gair said.
"We never had a close game. As a defensive
player, you were usually in for only three
plays and the punt team would come in. It
was a luxury. Then the second team would
come in during the second hall.•
Defensive end Mark Link (Newport
Harbor), left tackle Ross Malinowski,
linebacker T.A. Brown, comerback Tim
Hicks and safeties Dave Bienek and Mark
Modes were also primary starters on defense.
"l can't think ol any inclividual superstar
on defense, except we bad a couple of
defensive backs who were really good,"
Parsons said.
J ack Fair, OCC's defensive coordinator at
the time, was always a step ahead of the
competition .

"I Uunk we were also good because of the
fact we had so much depth, the regulars
clidn 't have to pound m there for four
quarters," Tucker said. "You look at the size
of Accomando (5-foot-9, 167 pounds), and
he's playmg only half, or two-thirds, of the
games, so he's not getting h.it as much. We
practtcally had nobody hurt. Because he
didn't carry as much, that's probably why
he's not the (OCC) leadmg ground-gainer

would predict what play they would call on

How could there be? Defense and special
teams were as much a part of the Pirates'
game as their vaunted offense.
"I remember saying to the guys that there
are very few teams that can ever go
undefeated, and this could be a lifetime
memory for you," Tucker said . "For the rest
of your lives, you'll be able to say you played
