O.J. hoineco~ing photos: The run is on
• While some customers plead for removal of Star magazin~ers buy out
Simpson edition; one pharmacy keeps it hidden under the counter.
By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot
U the phone calls at local stores
this week are any indication. the
gap between O.J . fans and O.J.
foes hasn't narrowed.
Customers called supermar-
kets and convenience stores
Monday and Tuesday to see if this
week's issue of Star magazine,
featuring the world exclusive of
O.J . Simpson's homecoming. was
on the racks. Others pleaded that
the tabloid be banned from news-
stands.
In some stores, such as Ralph's
supermarket in 1'rlangle Square
Costa Mesa and Hughes Market
in Newport Beach , the $1.29 mag-
azine -with a cover portrait of
Simpson smiling and hugging his
beaming family after he returned
to his Rockingham estate last
week -is sold out and will not be
replenished.
No more issues will be distrib-
uted in H ughes Markets, and
none were sold at stores in the
cities where the victims' families
live, according to a Hughes
spokeswoman.
But while some view the
"exclusive" as a collectors' item,
others find the publication offen-
sive because O.J. was reportedly
paid $1 million by Star for the
homecoming photos.
Customers called the Via Lldo
Drug store in Newport Beach and
asked them not to sell the tabloid,
store co-manager Kartn
Younghusband said. One caller
said she represented eight
women who were telephoning
the various local stores where
they shop to request they not sell
the tabloid.
ffThey felt strongly that O.J .
shouldn't be profiting from this.·
Young husband said . • ... I always

Water employee cited for possession of marijuana
• Citizen calls police
while following water dis-
trict employees from Cos-

Beach.
By Ttna Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -A Mesa Con-
solidated Water District employee
who was pulled over on suspicion
of drunken driving while hauling
supplies in a district vehicle to a
company picnic was also cited for
posses.ion of marijuana.
The 35-year-old employee, ·
whom police identified as Daniel
Valdez, was taken into custody at
9:30 d.m. Sept. 30 and booked
into the Huntington Beach jail on
allegations that he was driving
while under the influence of alco-
hol and drugs. He was released
with a citation later in the day and
is scheduled to appear in court
Nov. 3, Huntington Beach police
Lt. Dan Johnson said.
Johnson said the department
gave Valdez a breath test and
took a urine sample. However, be
declined to release the breath test
results and said the department is
"1t1ll awaiting the resldts of the
urine analysis.
Another employee, 39-year-old
Michael Nevill, a passenger in the
water district car, was cited at the
scene for aJlegedly having an
open container or alcohol, John-
son said.
·A citizen l\ad been following
the vehicle and called us up on
the (cellular) phone to report a
possible drunk driver." Johnson
said. "The citizen was in Costa
Mesa when they first noticed the
vehicle, and then they followed it
into Huntington Beach.•
Police pulled over the car, a
1989 Ford Escort o\Ylled by the
water district.. at the intersection
of Adams Avenue and Rathert
Lane, Johnson said. The car was
released to a Mesa Consolidated
officidl at the scene.
A spokeswoman from the
agency Monday said the two men
were "delivering supplies and
things" to· a water district compa-
ny picnic at Edison Park in Hunt-
ington Beach. However, she said,
neither man was on duty at the
time, and alcohol was not served
at the event.
Both men have been placed on
paid administrative leave wh.tle
district officials investigate the
matter.

Participants will parade down
al use permit, requiring Empire
management to arrange on-site
provisions for taxi cabs to pick up
and drop off patrons.
Costa Mesa Planning Manager
Perry Valantine said some resi-
dents had complained taxi cabs
were dropping patrons off across
the street, creating a lot of foot
traffic in the area.
The commissioners also added
a condition that prorubits music
from being audible outside the
dub.
An Empire Ballroom spokes-
woman could not be reached for
comment Tuesday. However,
Valantine said the club's man-
agers voiced some dissatisfaction
with the latter request.
"The managers of the club
were a little concerned about the
noise condition,• Valantine said
Tuesday. "They said they'EI. never
had any complaints about the
music and thought that condition
might be a little excessive.•
And last month, the Redevel-

sions to a plan that had been
approved earlier in September by
the Planning Commission, doing
away with a requirement that the
club's management link Empire's
parking lot with an ad1acent lot at
Staples.
The Planning Commission had

Bodysurfers feel efforts were sunk, too
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
BALBOA PENINSULA -While
hard-board surfel"I got the limelight
dwing the anti-blackball campaign,
bodyswfers found themselves
caught up in the debate as well.
And. like many board surfers. the
bodysurfers believe the City Coun-
cil made the wrong decision.
Immediately alter preserving
eiusting reguJalions of summer
hard-board surfing, the City Council
voted to continue prohibiting surf·
bodrds and body boards at the
Wedge between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
from May through October.
Members of the Wedge Preser-
Vdlion Society had lobbied the
counctl to extend the board-free
hours to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m .. thereby
indlcaung the Wedge 1S pnmanly a

·The society's proposal won the
approval of the city's Parks, Beaches
and Reaeation Com.mission. At the
direction of Mayor John Hedges,
recreation subcommittees have
studied the summer blackball regu-
lations since the begiruung of the
summer.
Neither the council members nor
bodysurfing advocates said they
expected the Wedge regulations to
become part of the blackball discus-
sion. However, a handful of Wedge
Society members said their interests
were just as important as the hard-
board surfers' concerns.
Bodysurfing is ·a dying art,•
Wade maintains. By further restrict-
ing hard-board and body board
hours, bodysurfers can work toward
making the Wedge a bodyswfing-
only beach. The society bas been
working toward this goaJ for more
than two years, Wade said.
"Bodysurfers can't compete for
waves with people on flotation
devices,· Wade said. •It's an unfair
situation. And the Wedge has histor-
said Sharp, formerly a professionaJ
kneeboarder and editor of Suiting
Magazine. "Hopefully, we'll all
work together in good faith and get
the surf when conditions warrant.·
Surfers say their goaJ has always
been to obtain all-day summer surf-
ing beaches in Newport Beach, the
only coastal city in CaWomia with-
out a blackball-free beach. Since
the beginning of summer, the New-
port Surf Council has lobbied the
city to change its regulations and
set aside surfing beaches. Industry
representatives even opened a
bank account and contributed more
than $17,000 to help meet the
staffing and sign costs of blackball-
free beaches.
A subcommittee of the city's
Parks, Beaches and Recreation
Commission crafted a proposal dnd
sent it to the City Council with a
recommendation that the council
lift the blackball. But lhe proposal
met with cons1derdble opposibon
from West Newport homeowne rs
who wom ed that lifting the black-
ball would put swimmers at nsk
and cause the com.muruty to be
overrun by rowdy surfers dunng
the summer.
Although the proposal would
have allowed surfers and non-
surfers to share the blackball-free
beaches, residents on both sides of
the issue acknowledged surfers and
non-surfers generally don't mix. In

In casting their votes, council
members decided the current
restrictions were adequate. Coundl-
woDlAD Nonna Glover, who offered
the motion, said fairness was her
primary consideration.
"We keep forgetting that the
Wedge doesn't belong to anybody, it
belongs to everybody,• Glover said.
"We need to remind ourselves of
that." .~
Ed Madigan, a Costa Mesa resi-
dent, put the argument in slightly
different terms.
"The' bard-core bodysurfers are
basically saying. 'I've got mine, and
you don't get any. Not in my back-
yard,'• Madigan said.
Uke most of his colleagues,
Cound.lman Tom Edwards could

sion.
"(The bodysurfers) seemed to
glob on to the concerns the board
surfers had,• Edwards said. "That's
all 1 can figure.•
Jan Debay cited· safety of non-
surfers as one of the key reasons
she supported existing regulations.
By preserving the blackball,
surfers said the council discounted
hours of study contributed by the
recreation sub-committee. Black·
ball opponents were particularly
upset by Debay's remarks, which,
they claimed, indicated she bad
made up her mind before the hear-
ing.
Robin Sinclair, a member of the
surl council, called Debay's remcvks
"scnpted ." "Even if new issues

said "She didn't even ad lib."

Peninsula resident Dayna Pettit
felt the council made the correct
decision. With increasing numbers
of people visiting the beaches dur-

injuries and liability was too great
to ignore, Pettit said.

COSTA MESA -Understandably, there was
concern on Estancia Higb's girls volleyball
team entering Tuesday's Pacific Coast League
match against cross-town rival Costa Mesa.
~The girls were starting to look at each oth-

Estancia Coach Dave Castle said.
Before their 15-6, 15-13, 15-7 victory over
the visiting Mustangs, the Eagles (3-5, 1-2 in
PCL) had dropped five consecutive matches,
inducting a four-game loss against Laguna Hills
and a five-game setback against Univeruty in
PCL action.
"We needed it." Castle said. "It's been a
long time since we've won. Those losses
(against Laguna Hills and Uni) were dose. We
could take either of those two teams in the sec-
ond round.•
Estancia was led by Jill Black's 19 kills, five
service aces and five digs, while sophomore
Amy DeMing added 10 .digs, seven kills and
two aces, and Jennifer McCartin four kills alld
a pair of stuff blocks.
"It's difficult to convince them wbat it takes
to win, when they've never won before,· said
Dave Sorrells, Costa Mesa's first-year coach .
"But they played harder in this match than any
other match, before."

lead. For the game-winning s*-nt. Black lOlted
a two-fisted volley from the waist on a sUnpJe
return that landed untouched on Mesa's side.
Collett added seven kills and five blocks for
Mesa, while Harber and Taline Seikeldpan had
nine digs each.
Harber was playing with a jammed index
finger on her right hand. "Her finger was
killing her, and she played by far her best
match of the year," Sorrells said.
ln the third game, Mesa led quickly, 4-0,
behind Evelyn Powers' two aces, but Blade took
over from there, recordmg 11 ot her kills in the
game as the Mustangs scored only three more
points. Ellie Thompson's serving got Estancia
back on top, 5-4.

The Eagles do a lot of blitzing
on defense, about 60% of the

the linebackers and the safeties.
"Our linebackers (Thompson

fast," Laudenback said. •1 believe
they Me just as fast, or taster, than

The Eagle have stressed fun·

season.
"Our guys have had to step up
on defense and do the job," Lau-

that our blitzing player will put
them on the ground, before they
find any vulnerability deep."
The offense is the perfect com-
