Of salutes and
seniors at council
The Costa Mesa City Council
tonight will tackle two hotly
debated issues: the city's policy
on memorials and a proposal for
a senior-care home on Winter-
green Place.
The memorial policy review
was triggered by a resident's
controversial offer to donate
money to set up a grove of trees
dedicated to those "whose lives
naveoeen touChed by HIV and
AIDS."
The proposal fo r a 14-unit
senior home on Wintergreen
has triggered loud opposition
from neighbors.
The council is also slated to
hear a report Crom Police Chief
Dave Snowden responding to
resident Ernie Feeney's request
to ge! monthly crime reports.
The meeting begins at 6:30
p .m. in the City Hall council
chambers, 77 Fair Drive.

In 1969, 96 Newport surfers peti·
tioned the Newport City Council to
rescind the 4-year-old annual surfboard
fee 11t local beaches. The surfers also
asked for an area south of Newport Pier
to be opened up to full-ti.me surfing.
Since the lice1'\.5e law WdS passed in
1965, surfers pajd a totaJ of more than
$27,000 in $3 license fees and $10 fines.
The money was used by the city to help
pay for patrolling the surfing areas in
Newport Beach.
The petition from the Newport swfers
asserted that the license decals were
ugly and did not stay on the surfboards
very well. They also maintained that it
was unfair to tax surfers and not tax
swimmers using the same ocean.
Councilman Howard Rogers asked
the marine safety and police depart-

canceling the license fees for at lea st a

guards raised a black flag whenever
s urters grew too numerous. When the
signal was hoisted , the surfe rs had to
leave the a rea.
The surfers did beat the license fee -
it was banished by January of 1970-but

SURGE OF INTEREST
Automobiles that are
equipped with fuel injection
should not surge under any con-
dition. Surging is characterized
by a variation in engine power
while a car is at cruising speed
or under steady throttle. When
this problem does arise, it is
usually noticed as a pulsing
action While the accelerator ped-
al is only slightly depressed at a
steady speed. Cars that experi-
ence this symptom should be
brought in for a diagnostic test
to isolate its cause, which can
range from a partially clogged or
leaky fuel injector, to a defective
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sys-
tem (EGA) valve, a clogged
EGA filter, a vacuum leak, a
defective oxygen sensor, or ·a
defective engine coolant sensor.
Before taking this action, how-
ever, try using a different brand
of gas to see if the detergents
will clean a clogged Injector.
HINT: Try the above-mentioned
switch to a different gasoline
(with different detergent levels)
for three straight tank fulls.
GETI'ING IT STRAIGHT
If an automoblle pulls to either
side when braking on a straight
and level road, it Is time to have
the auto technician inspect the
brakes. Stepping on the brake
pedal causes the hydraulic system
to apply Increased pressure at all
four wheels. Becuase the front
brakes generally do most of the
braking. a defect In the front
brakes may be more noticeable.
For a smooth and even stop. the
disc-brake callper must squeeze
the rotors with the same amount
of pressure all around. If a rusted
or worn brake caliper were to
drag or not squeeze properly, the
result can be uneven braking fric-
tion that can produce uneven
braking power. Wom brake pads
can have the aame undesirable
effect. Thus, brake calipers
should be checked for leaks and
for binding any time the brakes
dlspfay uneven braldng power. In
the meantime, drtvera who detect
a pull to one aide while braking
should reduce their speed to make
oontrolllng the car easier.

Pirates run at will
•Orange Coast finds a
Homecoming patsy, beat
up on the Olympians
before 'crowd' of 1,200.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA-It was a tail-
back's dream. No Mission Con-
t erence team is more feeble
against the rush this season than
San Diego Mesa College.
"We knew we could run all
over them, that's why we
worked on it in practice," said
Orange Coast tailback Quincy
Wunbisb, who gained 108 yards
on 15 cames in a backup role, as
the Pirates treated their
dwarlisb homecoming crowd
(estimated 1,200) to a 42-21 con-
ference victory over the
Olympians Saturday, a night
when the school hosted a 20-
year reunion for its 1975 nation-
al championship team.
But while the turnstile count
was low, the OCC rushing fig-
ures soared, as the Pirates' start-
ing of1ensive line of Brian Smith,
Keith Gray, center Charlie
PeSCC\fOlo, Matt Meehan and
Donovan Casey cracked gaping
holes through Mesa's porous
defensive front, allowing
William League (178 yards in 17
carries), Wimbish, fourth-string
tailback Kai Balubar (51 yards in
seven rushes), and others, to
reap 386 team rushing yards in
51 canies.
"The game goes to the offen-
sive line, they put on the blocks
all night,• said League, who
carried for triple-digit yards in
his second consecutive game,
this one being the 14th best sin-
gle-game effort in OCC's 48-
year football history.
League, who bad touchdown
runs of SO. 16 and 6 yards, and
Wimbish became the first
Orange Coast pair to carry for
over 100 yards in the same
game since Jeff Clayton (134
yards) and Garrick Emry (107)
did it against San Diego Mesa in
1993.
The Olympians (0-5, 0-4 in
confe rence) came in ranked
d ead last in the conference in
rushing defense, allowing an
average of 227 ground yards per
contest.
"That was our plan in this
game, to run, because when you
do that, it can set up your pass,•
KATSUYA RAINONE I DAILY PILOT
OCC's Ape Tuato drags SD Mesa's 'Leonard Brown down.
Pescarolo said.
"I was surprised we threw as
little as we did, but the running
game was going well, so we
stayed with it,• OCC Coach Bill
Workman said.
Matt Sauk, OCC quarter-
back:, made a good hood orna-
ment for the Pirates' bulldoWig
offensive line that trucked its
way through enemy territory as
if it was filming a Battle of the
Bulge sequel.
Wimbish got most of the
backup calls, because second-
stringer Chet Walker still has a
gimpy ankle. "Coach gave me
an opportunity to get in there.
and it feels good,· Wimbish
said.
Balubar, whose parents were
in town from Hawaii, got the
green light in mop-up duty, then
floored it. In his first four carries,
all in OCC's final drive in the
fourth quarter, he bad gains of
19, 18 and 11 yards.
The school record for the
most team rushing yards in a
game is 446, set in 1950 against
LA Valley, in case you were
wondering.
Of Orange Coast's 20 first
downs, all but four came from
rushing.
The Pirates (2-3 overall and
in conference) on defense also
held their opponent to under
100 yards on the turf for the sec-
ond straight week, coming on
the heels of their 31-28 thriller
over district rival Golden West,
in which they held the Rustlers
to 44 rushing yards (26 carries).
San Diego Mesa, which has
lost to Orange Coast eight of the
past 10 years, was limited to 71
yards (24 carries) on the ground.

many times can television, as in

The Orange County-based

By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -It was a tail-

against the rush this season than
San Diego Mesa College.
·we knew we could run all

worked on it in practice," said
Orange Coast tailback Quincy

But while the turnstile cowit
was low, the OCC rushing fig-

Donovan Casey cracked gaping
holes through Mesa's porous
defensive front, allowing
William League (178 yards in 17
carries), Wunbish, fourth-string
tailback Kai Balubar (51 yards in
seven rushes). and others, to
reap 386 team rushing yards in
51 carries.
"The game goes to the offen-
