"I thlnk there is a real need in this
community for this facility," said
Hillary Mayfield, a nationally known
rider and horse trainer at the center. Nit
just needs some proper management."
This year's projections show the cen·
ter will adually make a little money,
said Jill Lloyd, the fair's spokeswoman,
but those estimates don't include many
security and administrative overhead
costs.
MMC MARTIN I DAILY PILOT
Hillary Mayfield, a trainer for 37 horses at the Fairgrounds, would be greatly affected by a shut-
down. Mayfield ls shown here working with student Lauren lndvlk. 8, of Newport Beach.
"Of course. dunng conslru(t10n, I'm gomg to

The center houses 140 horses at a
cost of $350 per month though it has
room for 240.
Mayfield said the shows sometimes
cause problems with the boarders when
center workers take down the jumping
equipment days before a show, leaving
the borders and trainers to ride in an
empty ring.
"It's kind of a conflict with us horse
trainers because (the shows) take over

rental doors.
Indvik began boarding her daugh-
ter's pony, Moonshine, at the fair-
grounds in February after running into
problems at a crowded facility in San
Juan Capistrano. lndvik bought anoth-
er horse, Merlot, last 'week and is also
boarding him at the fairgrounds.
"When we were at San Juan. Lauren
was scared to walk the pony without
me holding onto it,• she said. "It was so
dangerous with all the other riders. As
a mother, I didn't feel she was safe."
Now Lauren shows no fear taking
the reins and riding to the corral alone
because the fairgrounds are less crowd·
ed.
Indvik said another reason she
moved Moonshine to Costa Mesa was
to have the pony closer to home.
Pair officials will meet with boarders
and trainers at 6:30 p.m . today in the
fairgrounds' Memorial Gardens to dis·
cuss turning the Equestrian Center into
a sell-supporting year-round show

tioned and detained by Costa
Mesa police officers until they dis·
covered she was not the woman
who allegedly passed counterfeit
checks at a store in the mall.
Slater reportedly claimed she
did not match the description of
the suspect police were looking for
as far as her weight and other
details about her attue. Slater
called the incident an example of
the racism in Orange County.
Slater was ordering food at the
~ounter of the Wolfgang Puck
restaurant with her two children
when Costa Mesa police officers
asked her to step outside with
them for questioning about the
counterleit incident, according to
police reports.
Police received a call at 7:30
p.m. Friday that a black woman in
her 30s, wearing a black and white
dress, 5-feet-11, 160 pounds and
accompanied by two children
attempted to use a counterfeit
traveler's check at the Saruio Gift
Gate store, accQrding to Costa
Mesa police reports. The checlc
was reportedly denied, and the
woman left tJie store, ac<:ording to
police.
South Coast Plaza security
reportedly spotted Slater, who
matched the suspect's descnption,
and summoned police, who
stopped Slater for questioning,
according to police reports.
After 12 minutes of being inter-
rogated by the officers, Slater was
reportedly released when the
~ore's assistant manager looked at
Slater and told police she was not
the woman who tried to use the
bogus checks.
Costa Mesa police Capt. Tom
Lazar said field interrogations are
a common practice when police
are looking for a criminal suspect
and going by a physical descrip-
tion from witnesses.
"We do field line-ups all the
time,• Lazar said. uThe reason we
do is so we don't have to go
through unnecessary procedures
and inconvenience people -it is a
common practice.· .
Police are still investigating the
counterfeit case in which no one
has been arrested.
According to the-police report,
South Coast Plaza security aided
police in the incident. However, a
mall spokeswoman who refused to
give her name said security had no
report of the incident.
Slater is a fr~quent shopper at
South Coast Plaza, and security is
usually alerted when well-known
people or celebrities are at the
shopping center, the spokes-
woman said. In Slater's case, she
added, they were not aware she
was on the mall premises Friday
night.

At the time, commissioners said
the request didn't fit within the

some of the donors have said they-

was based more on pollbcs.
The controversy prompted
Mayor Joe Erickson and Council-

and they suggested creating a new
policy that city officials would
understand and stick to.
"I think we do need to adopt a

TAYLOR-MADE
•Costa Mesa's versatile
third-year starter adds
running back to long list
of positions in which he
has excelled.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
C osta Mesa
High
football
coach
Jerry Howell
sidled up beside
senior Ryan Taylor
the other day leaving the
practice field and facetiously
suggested the 5-foot-11,
160-pounder learn defensive
tackle this week.
Howen admitted he was
joking, but the versatile Taylor
instantly answered in the
affirmative, as if merely pldying
quarterback, wide receiver,
running back, outside
linebacker, inside linebacker and
being ready at a moment's notice
to backpedal into the secondary
at comer or safety, weren't
challenging enough.
"We can't ask Ryan to do any
more than he does, H said Howell,
who once again expanded the
talented third-year starter's }Ob
description Friday night against
Laguna Beach.
With starter Ray Ohrel
unavailable and his inibal
replacement struggling, Taylor
was summoned -N out of the
blue,• according to Howell -to
line up at I tailback in the second
quarter.
Though he had just 13 yards
on thl'ee carries before halftime,
Taylor exploded Jor 152 on 13
second-hall attempts, including a
50-yard touchdown on his
second carry after intermission.
The touchdown run, just 1 :03
into the third quarter, expanded
a 7-3 lead, all but clinched the
Pacific Coast League-opening
15-3 triumph, and added to
Taylor's. already-pliable
proficiency.
"I've had a couple (varsity)
TDs at quarterback, on bootlegs,
or broken plays,• Taylor
explained, "and I've returned a
couple interceptions for
touchdowns. But this was the
first one where I was supposed
Ryan Taylor
to get the ball."
Taylor, All-PCL at outside
'backer as a Junior, said the
move to running back was
merely a return to his position of
choice.
"I pldyed runrung back in my
three years of Pop Warner and
also on the freshmen team,"
Taylor said. "I hadn't worked
there since, but that's what I
really want to do."
Ohrel's expected return will
likely bump Taylor back to either
receiver or quarterback, but not
before the consummate team
player could submit a request.
·I asked Coach Howell to put
me m for another couple carries
11 he could, H said Taylor, whose
modest size and otherwise
unimposing physical credentials
(4.85 in the 40-yard dash and a
maximum bench press of 225)
belie his ability to outperform
more physically-gifted foes.
"He just has gr~at football
sense,• said Howell. "He doesn't
have fantastic skills, but he
knows how to play football. He
gets lhe most out of what he has
and manages to be where he is
supposed to be and gets the job
done."
Taylor, who said then-coach
Myron Miller brainwashed him
into thinking he could compete
on the varsity as a sophomore,
said he still enjoys the underdog
role.
But perhaps a more fitting role
ts that of overachiever.

The Costa Mesa Cowboys, the·
local Midget team, battled the
Santa Ana Redskins for three
quarters before giving up the go-
ahead touchdown to the hosts
and losing 13-6 in Santa Ana.
The Cowboys actually con-
trolled the game in the first half,
allowing the Redskins only four
plays in the first quarter and nine
in the second, while running 19
plays of their own in the first and
13 in the second quarter.
Mesa led 6-0 at the half, but
Coach Gary Bawne voiced a con-
cern to bis team that six points
won't win the game.
The theory centered around
Santa Ana's quickness, and
although Santa Ana only hurt
Costa Mesa with its speed twice,
it proved to be enough.
Offensively Mesa had a pass-
ing combination of Brett Becker
to Kevin Coch.ran, Becker to
David Weir and Becker to Jimmy
Herzog, to blend with the running
of Weir, Herzog and Matt
Mueller.
On defense Cowboys Shaun
Ferryman, Pavel Estrade, Gamet
Moore, Cameron Link. Henog,
Justin Tag and Ryan Johnson all
earned praise from Coach Baume.
"We played tough for the
entire game, I understand the
Redskins are undefeated, but I
think we gave them all they
wanted in that game.
"I'm sorry they bad that injury
at the end of the game -after
talking to our team we decided to
end the game with 56 seconds left
after their back sustained a bro-
ken arm.•
