Costa Mesa's lack of pass

Jason Morin appears lost
for the season with
ligament tear in his right
knee.
By Barry Faulkner. Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Costa
Mesa Hi,gh football coach J erry.
Howell found out a couple things
he probably already knew in
Thursday night's 34-12 Pacific
Coast League loss to visiting Aliso
Niguel at Newport Harbor High.
1) The Mustangs have difficul-
ty covering receivers
2) The place they could least
afford inJuries Wds on the often:'
sive line.
"We clidn't have any tackles
left,· Howell said m the aftermath ·
of Aliso's convincing triumph,
whlch dropped the Mustangs to
4-3, 1-1 in ledgue, while improv-
ing the Wolvenne!>' mark to 5-2,
1-1.
The alreddy-lhin offensive
front waJJ came in without the ser-
vices of senior center Nick
Lefever (serving one-gdme sus-
pe nsiC?n for being ejected for
fighting last week}.
And thmg!> only got worse on
the third play of the second quar-·
ter, when senior two-way tackle
Jason Morin, an all-league choice
last fall, went down with an
apparent medtal collateral liga-
ment tear m his right knee.
"That looks like an operation
(today),· said Howell, who has lit-
tle time to cultivate replacements
with cross-town nval Estancia
awaJting Thursday.
"Our game plan was to run the
ball and make fewer mistakes,
but when we lost Morin, the
game plan was gone,· continued
Howell, who dppeared to have
things just the way he wanted
them after the Mustangs' first
possession.
After fielding the opening
kickoff, the hosts needed just five
plays to cover 66 ydrds, wilt}
junior tailback Ray Ohrel capping
the march from 3 yards out with
just 2:43 elapsed. Ohrel provided
the big play of the series, a 54-
yard rumble to Wolverines' 6.
The Mesa defense, which had
yielded just 35 pomts in 1ts first six
contests, fourth fewest in Orange
County, forced Altso to go three-
and-out on its ft!St two posses-
sions.
But Wotverine juruor quartet-
back Scott Nemeth had yet to warm up.

Estancia did Thursday night.

•
BUENA PARK -A proposal to
divide Orange County's 10 major
leagues into two enrollment-
based playoff divisions beginning
next season was solidly rejected
Thursday by the CIP Southern
Section Council, which requested
one or more new football playoff
tormat(s) be returned for discus-
sion as a nonaction item at the
Jan. 25 council meeting.
Though the majority of discus-
sion at the Sequoia Athletic Club
centered around reg1onahzed
playoff proposals in baseball, soft-
ball, boys and guts soccer. boys
and girls tennis and boys volley-
ball (Plan I). as well as boys and
girls basketball and guls volley-
ball (Plan JI). the council agreed
lo vole upon those items sepa-
rately. with polenbal reVlsions,
Jan. 25.
Principals, athletic directors
and coaches will be asked to sub-
mit suggestions dnd/or concerns
regarding footbdll playoffs to the
section o!flce before Nov. 15, so
they can be relayed to a CIF
regionalization committee
charged with lessening playoff
travel costs for schools section-
wide.
The counctl voted to postpone
for two yedfs consideratiol\ of the
cornmittee'c; current rootbalJ pro-
posal. wtuch would have trans-
formed the currt>nt 1 t dwis1ons
into six rt>gions The regions
wouJd then havP crowned one,
two, or three conference champi-
ons, depending on how mdny
leagues they contarned.
Retaining the current 11-divi-
sion playoff format, approved for
the 1994-95 seasons, was dis-
eu.ssed, but-deemed-unworkable,
due to the addition of a new
league of schools playing 11-man
football~ •
The rejected football proposal
would have changed little for
Newport Harbor and Corona del
Mar, both of which compete in
Division V, comprised of schools
from five county leagues.
The committee's original pro-
posal, however, would have stiff-
e ned postseason competition for
Division VIII members Costa
Mesa and Estancia, potentially
pitting them against Division V
schools.
The earliest a new football
playoff proposal can be passed
now. is the March 7 council meet-
ing.
