' ' '\ ' \ \ : ' ~~ ; : ~, \ J Planes, trains and automobiles Ti.me was when the annu al League of California Cities con- ference would all but empty out local city halls. Particularly if the meeting was in San Francisco. In 1991, for instance, Newport Beach dispatched a dozen city officials to the five-day govern- ment fest a t a cost of more than $13,000. Costa Mesa sent 13 people that year at a cost of about $10,000 (cheaper eats, evi- dently). That particular trip drew its fair share of criticism, especially when some of the details were revealed. Like the planning offi- cials who spent $448 for dinner with a group of eight delegates ... or the planning commissioner who charged the city for a $10 tip for a bellman and another $20 for a ticket to a comedy show ... or $20 breakfast submit- ted by the then-parks director. Things have changed radical· ly, however. This year, Newport Beach is sending only five representa- tives -three of them council members. And Costa Mesa is sl).ipping out six representatives -a trio of council members included. There are also tighter rules this year. Costa Mesa dele· gates get only $36 a day for food money. The Newport crew -but of course -get a bit more for food. Fifty bucks a day. This is your life Allan Roeder was treated to the ultimate surprise party this week. In recognition of his 10 years as city manager of Costa Mesa, staffs and various officials had a surprise party for Roeder. Among other things, the . staff prepared a 15-minute video on Roeder's life. His 15 minutes of fame, so to speak. A good chunk of Roeder's life bas been spent looking out for Costa Mesa. For the six years before becoming city manager, Roeder was the assistant to for- mer City Manager Fred Sorsa- bal. -Complied by Steve Marble r----------------~ 1 ' P r \ I I I I AROUND TOWN CLASSIFIED ' 4 I LOCAL SCENE LOOKING BACK 9 : 3 : 2 I PUBLIC NOTICES 8 SPORTS 6 WEATHER 2 How to reach us ... 8USINESS FAX 631-5902 ORCULATION 800-252-9141 QASSIFIED ADS 642-5678 NEWSROOM 540-1224 NEWS FAX SPORTS On call ... 646-4170 642-4330 Let your views be hffrd. By Tina Borgatta, Datly Piiot COSTA MESA -The Planning Commission tonight will consider recommending a change in land use for the Coastal Inn motel site, switching it from a neighborhood commercial designation to medi- um-density residential. The city shut down the 86-unit lodging earlier this year after the owner failed to complete city· mandated repairs. Since then , there have been two fires at the motel. And, severdl tenants have contmued to stay there despite a court order declaring the property at 2374 Newport Blvd. a public nuisance. · #People have expressed inter- est in buying the property, and we really feel we need to gwe some attention to that one block.· Cos· ta Mesa Planning Manager Perry Valantine said. "We don't want it to sit there for too long or have someone come along wanting to open another motel." H ALWAYS DEUVEJlED Some folks say Bob Pet- tit began carrying the mail with the Pony Express, but that would be stretching things. Actul\lly, his career as a postman began in 19371 back in Chicago. He came here in '53, when he saw a letter addressed to some- one in Newport Beach, and decided impulsively to deliver it personally. And now, Robert J. Pettit of Costa Mesa is ending his marathon run. He retired Friday after 34 years as a federal work- er and several decades with a e_rtvate mail delivery firm. Pettit, who'll turn 81 next month, is surrendering bis pouch but not his punch. He's still mak- ing an impact with the Society for the Preservation and Encour- agement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. ·ru no longer be a tenor,· he croons. •They've down-graded me to a fiver." He main- tains, •rve never sunk low enough .to be a baritone." As lead singer for years with a fearsome foursome known as the Beach Nuts, Pettit collaborated with tunnyman C.E. Brown on the writing and rendering (asun- der) of such barbershopper dit- ties as "Tacos for lWo." Such clowning was simple for Pettit, who entered showbiz at age 4 and remains an uncured ham. His father was interlocutor for a ~trel show, working with the likes of Eddie Cantor. Now that the postal burden has been dropped, he's busily creating tunes for the Westmin- ster-based Golden City Chorus. His latest opus is tentatively titled "Show Me a Home Where the Buffalo Roam, and I'll Show You a Filthy House.• Also warming in the oven awaiting delivery is another work destined for the h eights: ~He Lost His Pancreas in San Andreas, but It Wasn't His Fault." Bob's postal rounds are end- ed, but he'll continue singing as long as there are barber shop harmonies. Though pleased with his offense, led bril- liantly once again by senior quarterback Josh Walz, who threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 74 yards and two more scores, Freeman decried the defensive breakdowns that allowed the county's highest-scoring offense to run amok. "After looking at the film, I'd love to have another chance to play these guys," said Freeman after Friday night's 40-35 Sea View League loss to the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division V. Indeed the 26 unanswered El Toro points that followed Josh Walz's 46-yard intercep- tion return for a touchdown to open the scor- ing, dampened the Sea King spirits. "I don't think they can play any better than they did the other night and I know we can. Costa Mesa High football coach Jerry Howell said the two-way senior lineman's injury did a lot more than deprive the Mustangs of a leader in Thursday night's 34· 12 loss to Aliso Niguel.
