'Filled with pride, with sadness at the loss of Gray'
• EDR'OR'S NOTE: This is a let-
ter from Melissa Sweet a Costa
Mesa parent who found pain,
sorrow and ultimately inspiration
in the short life of Gray Lunde,
the Newport Harbor student
who died last week of a heart
attack at the age of 14.
During this time of commu-
nity shock and mourning
over the loss of one of our
finest young citizens, Gray
Lunde, l thought it important to
write from another perspective on
this tragedy.
From time to time, we are
blessed to witness events that
seem to epitomize a situation.
Such a n event happened last
Thursday evening.
Woman
raped,
robbed at
gunpoint
By Carolyn Miller, Datly Pilot
COSTA MESA -A woman,
described by police as a prosti-
tute, was raped and robbed at
gunpoint Sunday night behind
the Ana Mesa lnn by a man who
pretended he was going to pay
her for sex. authonties said.
The 22-year-old woman was
walking on Harbor Boulevard
north of MacArthur Boulevard
when a man described dS being
37 to 38 years old with brown
hair, a beard and moustache
approached her and asked for
sexual favors, according to Costa
Mesa police.
The woman got into the man's
car with him at 11 :30 p.m., and he
drove her to an area behind the
Ana Mesa Inn at 3597 Harbor
Blvd., police reported.
Ensign's Middle School eighth
grade volleyball team was enjoy-
ing a postgame get-together at a
local pizza shop.
The girls' junior varsity field
hockey team from Newport Har-
bor High also arrived for their
postgame pizza feed. The stu-
dents and parents present were
all aware that Gray had been tak-
en to the hospital by ambulance
earlier in the afternoon.
Everyone was expecting things
would tum out as they had the
previous week when he had
passed out at water polo practice
-Gray was examined and found
to be fine. Unfortunately, amid all
the food and fun and youthful
energy, word arrived that Gray
had passed away.
Shock and sadness filled the
community reaction
faces of all present. The energy
level decreased as the realization
sank in -Gray's smile would n9t
be seen again.
While the grownups were
shaking their heads sadly and
expressing compassion for the
Lunde family, while the volleyball
team was seeking to understand
how such a thing could happen to
someone who only last June was
an eighth grader at Ensign just
like they were, while the pizza
was being eaten and the video
games were being played, some-
thing very beautiful happened.
The girls on the junior varsity
field hockey team whispered
among themselves and then, very
quietly and unpretentiously, col-
lected each other and gathered at
one of the booths. Hands reached
around the table until everyone
was connected .
Then they began to pray. They
prayed for Gray, and for his broth-
er Cole, and for the rest of his
family. They prayed so quietly
that no one else could hear them.
Their prayers were so unobtru-
sive that this act went unnouced
by many in the room. But among
those who did see, table-by-table,
the voices grew quiete r, more
respectful. The spiritual power of
these young laclies was a tangible
thing m the room. We were
caught up m a wave of goodwill
for the Lundes.
The girls did not do this thing
to attract attention. Their gesture
was a spontaneous one, good and
real and comforting to their own
hurt hearts. Then, very quickly, it
was over. Each girl went back to
her m eal. The video games were
busy again. They chatted and
laughed and teased as they had
been doing before. But things
were different for us. We had
been moved.
· We were filled with pnde, with
sadnes!) dt the loss of Gray and
with mcmy other unnamed emo-
tions. We made our way home
that night, thankful that. unlike
the Lundes, our lives would con-
tinue that .-vening relallvely
unchanged
ln an e rd when we heclf so
many negative things about our
youth, I wanted to share this
experience with you, how a nat-
ural and ordinary act became an
extraordinary one. Maybe it can
serve as one positive f'ffect that
can come from this ternble
tragedy
1 hope the Lunde farruly can
find a little comfort here. They
have enriched our community
with the addition of their three
fine -,ons Perhaps, m d partial
payback to them. tlus will serve as
a sndpshot mto the way Gray
touched so many lives, so posi·
lively.

I Soffer says city Will pay for towing cars
• Officials say they fol~
lowed law, bu t Costa
Mesa gadfly insists vehi-
cles were in working order.
By Tina Borgatta. Daily Pt.lot
COSTA MESA -The meter is
ticking away on four, beat-up
Cadillacs that are sitting in the
unpound Jot at G&W Towing in
Costa Mesa. and the owner of
those cars, Sid Soffer, bas no
intention of paying to get them
out
·Sure. I'd like them back,•
Soffer said Monday from Las
Vegas, where he's been living for
the past four months. ·aut, I'm
not going to pay to get them out
because I didn't do anything
wrong.•
Soffer insists the cars -two El
Dorados and two Sedan de Villes
-were in working order at the
b.lne the city hired a G& W crew to
haul them away from h1s Arbor
Street home a little more than a
month ago.
But city offioals say Sotter's
wrong.
They claim mechanics were
unable to kick over the engines
on each of the cars, even after
dropping a new battery in each
one
And. they say. by having those
veh1des on his property, Soffer
violated a court order that forbade
lum from ever stonng an inopera-
ble auto on his property again.
Soffer was slapped with that court
order after a similar problem with
the same cars back in 1991.
Soffer, however, disputes the
idea tus autos were not working.
"l've got a man that'll testify
under penalty of per]ury that they
were l1l working order when the
aty had them towed away: he
Sdld.
Still. to get the vehicles back.
Soffer will need to shell out some

cash.
G&W's towing fee is $77.25 per
car, plus a $35 fee from the city.
Then, for every day the cars a.re
on the lot, Softer can expect to be
charged $82. That would bring
the tally to a little more than
$3,600.
That little sum could come out
of the ttupayers' pockets, if a
Superior Court judge on Nov. 1
falls to uphold the city's actions.
And according to Soffer, the odds
are in his favor.
Soffer claims the city didn't fol-
low proper notification proce-
dures before removing the cars
from his property. He claims that
the city failed to give him 10 days
notice of its intention to remove
the cars from the property. and
the le tters that he did receive
from the city were mailed to his
Arbor Street home and his restau-
rant.
Soffer said the letters should
have been sent to his Las Vegas
address. which he gave to City
Manager Allan Roeder prior to
the date ol the oty's written com-
munication.
But city officials say they "dot-
ted every i and crossed every t• in
handling the manner.
And city officials say if the
court rules in their favor, a lien
could be slapped on Soffer's
Arbor Street property to collect
the money.
Meanwhile. Softer still won-
ders why he's being targeted by
the city. "Wlurt I'd really like to know is
who's trying to get Mr. Soffer and
why?" be asked. •Where are their
(the city) priorities? If they're short
·on money is this the most impor-
tant thing they have to spend it
on?"
But Planning Manager Perry
Valantine said it would be unwise
for the city to drop the case solely
because Soffer doesn't want to
pay the price.
·u·s unfortunate that we have
to put that much into pursuing
one individual,• Valantine said.
·a ut you can't just say this guy's
not going to cooperate and then
let him go. Then people will say
to our code enforcement officers,
·well look at this guy.' Sid Soffer is
used as an example (by scofflaws)
all over the city.•

Confessions of an extortionist -good for the soul
For one who bas spent his
entire adult We upholding
the law, tt is with some
chagrin that I admit I was at one
time a law violator, to be specif-
ic, an extortionist.
When I was about 6 years
old, my famlly moved from San-
t.a Ana to Green River, a grubby,
dirty little railroad town in
southwestern Wyoming. It was a
great town for a little boy to
grow up in. It wu definitely still
part of the Wlld West. For exam-
ple:
Prohibition wu never taken
·Seriously in Green River. Front
Street was lined with authentic
-0ld-style Western saloons with
'bat wing doors under which we
urch1ns could gaze with envy at
railroad workers and cowboys
bellying up to the bar.
Prom time to time, authentic
outlaws would ride into town
from nearby Brown's Hole,
which every Western history
buff knows was one of the great
. outlaw hangouts of the early
West, the others being Robber's
· Roost in nearby Utah and the
Hole in the Wall in northern
Wyoming.
Before he was hanged, Tom
Hom had done most of his bush-
-~ whacking of outlaws and nesters
in Brown's Hole, although he

to my parents.

All I knew was that the
inhabitants of the Green House

were allowed across the tracks
to do their shopping in the

Natasha Zvereva:
She's a textbook
breakaway
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
N EWPO RT BEACH -In the
dignified world of women 's
tennis, where the slightest
trace of incongruity will
ruffle feathers, Natasha
Zvereva stands alone on and off the
court.
Though Zvereva maintains
citizeTlShip from her native Belarus,
she's articulate in English.
Her palate for music, dress and
literature isn't exactly the choice of most
of her country dub-bred peers, but then
again Zvereva was never fed with a
silver spoon.
In fact, most
was taken away.
Case in point:
Seven years ago,
at ag e 17,
Zvereva became
the first Soviet
tennis pla yer to
break away from
her country's
fed eration and
demand direct
payments from
he r tournament
winnings.
When she was
younger. she
loved to read
novels. Her
parents would
borrow foreign
books from
friends for their
promising
daughter. Now
days, of course, Zvereva can stop into
the local Barnes & Noble and spend the
afternoon.
Even though these days Zvereva can
be seen raising silver platters or crystal
bowls on the court after triumphant
tournaments with doubles partner Gigi
Fernandez, she prefers to be seen with
ripped jeans, old sweaters and oversized
flannel shirts. Zvereva will even swathe
herself in flan:bel shirts instead of nylon
tennis cover-ups when warming up for
matches.
A s much as Fernand ez is glamour,
J-\.Zvereva is grunge. Together for 3
1/2 years, Fernandez and Zvereva -
who lives in Newport Beach when she's
not traveling the world on the Women's
Tennis Association (WTA) Tour -have
won 11 of the last 15 Grand Slam titles,
including this year's French Open and
U.S. Open. From 1993 to the end of July,
they had won 160 of 177 matches.

cordial to the media. Sometimes. .
"With the media, you have to be vert
careful about what you say, but 1t also
can do wonders for you,• Zvereva said
last week at the Palisades Tenrus Club,
where she often practices "I've had
some bad experiences with the ndllondl

I don't even talk to them It gets nasty
Automatically, they're angry with me lf I
·give them no information. But I don't
really care. They're jealous."
Though her attitude is carefree, and
her orr -court tastes are nothing dose to
the stereotyp1cdl woman tennis

"She's shy. but her reputation m the

owner of the Palisades Club "She does
that stuff. but on the inside, she's qUJet
She's one of the pnze human beings m
this world "
Zvereva, whose father used to be her
traveling coach, hires practice partners
at each tour locabon. When she's at the
Palisades Club, s he often hits with head
professional Robert Van't Hof. or one of
the many other pros who frequent the
dub, such as Scott Davis, Debbie
Graham and roommate Lindsay
Davenport.
"I didn't think he could help me any
more professionally," Zvereva said of he r
father. "I worked with another guy for
1 1/2 years, then I quit with tum. I don't
like being told what to do.
"(With a full-ti.me coach), you've got
to be constantly willing to be better, to
improve. You've got to be intense to hire
somebody. ln my situation, it's not worth
it to do that. because I don't need
anybody's help professionally In my
own way l do, but I'm satisfied with

Shortly after Zvereva broke away from

Double-duty efforts
by Eagles' Martinez
ignites Estancia
• Arkell Martinez takes up the
slack with a super second-effort.
ORANGE -Estancia High girls cross
country runner Arlceli Martinez expected
merely to cheer her teammates at Saturday's
Orange County Championships at Irvine
Park, following a fourth-place ettort (20:48)
in one of two Division m heats at Friday's
Mt. San Antonio College Invitational in Wal·
nut.
But when a pair of junior varsity runners
didn't show, Martinez volunteered her ser·
vices and clocked a time of 19:25 to win the
nonseeded beat to pace Eagles to a fifth·
place finish in the heat.
#For her to come back like that after run-
ning a tough Mt. SAC course in very hot
weather Friday was incredible,# said
Estancia Coach Charlie Appell. •
Estancia's Brisaeda Salgado also com-
pleted the unusual double, finishing 16th in
her heat at Orange County (21:21), after
earning 29th in her heat at Mt. SAC (22:57).
Melissa Inouye (21 :50) and Tanya Perkins
(22:02) were 11th and 14th, respectively at
Mt. SAC, where Sarah Hall (23:10) and
Monica Sanchez (23:39) were 33rd and 39th.
Luz Aries (29th in 23:22), Carmen Gam·
boa (30th, 23:27), Adriana Vallejo (31st,
24:08), Sandra Mendoza (32nd, 24:48) and
Paula Shinners (35th, 26: 17) also con·
tributed at the Orange County meet.
Gerson Salgado finished second in...his
heat Saturday to lead the Estancia boys to a
fourth-place heat finish at the Orange
County Championships.
Salgado's had a time of 16:12. while Juan
Sanchez (11th, 17:01), Luis Lopez (20th,
17:35), Manuel Orozco (28th, 18:04), Mike
1'.ppell, 35th, 18:34) and Stephan Appell
(36th, t 8:36) rounded out the Eagle finish-
ers.

Another CdM coach,
assistant Mike Downs, enters
Friday's game with a new
perspective.
The last four years, be was
on the Newport Harbor
sideline as a member of the
Sailors' staff.
Downs, however, returned
to his roots this fall -he
graduated from CdM tn 1988" -
-and is coaching the
defensive backs and special
teams for the Sea Kings. a
Last week'• column
erroneously shorted CdM
senlor place-kicker Jimmy
Keane two PAT kicks,
meaning he had already bro-
ken the school career record
of 45, before toeing another ·
five more conversions against
El Toro last week.
It was Keane, now with 51
-career conversion kicks, who was denied the chance to win
last season's Battle of the Bay,
when miscommunication led
to a Sea King timeout with 20
seconds left.
Pacing third-and-five at the
Newport 8, the Sea King bra.in
trust elected to try to run
another play, before
attempting a chip-shot field
goal, and the result was a
fumble recovered by the
Sailors, preserving a 7-6 win.
