By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Finding a parking space at Orange Coast College next semester may prove more difficult for students than getting all the classes they want. School officials are expecting a dramatic increase in student enrollment after a state-imposed fee on college graduates expires at the end of the year. In 1993, the state Legislature imposed a $50-per-unit fee on conu:nunity college students with bachelor's or advanced degrees while other students paid $13 per unit But the fee expires Dec. 31, and OCC is gearing up for as many as 1,500 new students next semester, said Jim Carnett, the college's director of community relations. "We lost about 1,800 students after they imposed the fee,• Car- nett said. "Countywide at the eight Orange County community colleges, we all lost about 17,000 students.• Carnett said he expects most of the students lost two years ago will return to OCC when the spring semester begins Jan. 22. ·At the time, the Legislature w as saying the state had paid for these people (with degrees) to get an education once already, pre- suming these students had gone to a UC or CSU school," Carnett said. ·n was a cost-saving measure.· But the community colleges were losing their most needy stu- dents because of financial con- straints, he said. •Tuey need desperately to come back to school and retrain," Carnett said, adding that many of • SEE INCREAS E PAGE 5 shiny chrome carriers from store parking lots. City Manager Allan Roeder said he's not surprised. In the six weeks the retrieval program bas been in place, the city has collect- ed more than 1,600 carts. That adds up to nearly $20,000 in retrieval charges. And, he said, the money hasn't been paid without protest. Most of the stores have requested hear- ings appealing the charges, say- ing they have their own relneval programs, wluch should f'xempt them from the city's effort Still, Roeder said, the city's not about to abandon the fight "Our contractor has contmued ! mg lots and stf'dl thetr Cdlls • I "Tht>r P hdV(' been rumors '>pread by I fe<•I peoplt-' m the industry who hdve (suggested) our contrc1ctor 1<:. going on site and I taking the cc1rt., or that he has slntck di>als with the ')tori:'<:.' con- tractor., .,o hl' '<1n pKk up the carts lor the nty "I've d')ked (<,torf' mcll1d<.JPrs) ti then>\ ctnythtnq to ... u1> ... 1c1ntlall' the:>e c lrl1mo;; dncl we vi' 11•1 en•l'ci MARC MARTIN I DA.t.Y Pll.OT Preston ZWgitt and his wtle, Bonnie, have spent the better par1 of the past couple of years salllng around the United States -getting their boat, Cata.rtna. lD and out of some unusual places. Because football is not generally considered a femi- nine sport, women too often never learn the game and, con- sequently, feel left oot during football season. Sirus said. "I talk to women who say, 1 bate football."' said Sirus, a Dana Point resident and an edi- tor at the Anaheim-based Stu- dent Sports magazine. "A lot of that stems from the fact that they don't understand the game. "I really encourage women to participate. Football is such a soci.a1 sport for spectators with all the pre-game and post-game activities. It can really enharice your social life if you get involved." After giving students a ·bare bones" introduction t'.o the game -charting the path of the ball and laying out the concept of offense and defense -Sirus gradually moves into elements of strategy. "ln the mentality of a fan. you can get really hap- py or really upset about your team winning or losing. You may know it's only a game. but you allow yourself to get involved. "People. get so passionate about the outcome of a game. Some fans go to extremes and beat up people. I'm not encour- aging that" After the completion of Sirus' October workshop, a few class members got together to test their new skills at lrophy's sports bar in Newport Beach. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot D avid Letterman has Jay Leno, Johnnie Cochran had Marcia Clark, Gene Siskel has Roger Ebert, and Josh Amezola and Ryan Crogan have each other. Still. Linked by athletic competition since the seventh grade, Crogan and Amezola will once again represent opposing teams Friday night, even though their sideline surroundings (1.e. uniforms) have chdnged since ldst they met. Crogdn, now a middle bnebacker and fullback at Corona d e! Amezola, a comerback and running bdck at Newport Harbor, spent the last three falls monopobzing city bragging ri ghts over Estancia while wearing Cost.a Mesa's green, black and white uniform. Fate brings them together once more in a collision course culminating in the 34th edition of· the Battle of the Bay, Friday night at 7:30 at the Sailors' field. "One of the first things I though.t about when I transferred to Newport (after the second week of this season), was the Corona del Mar game, because of Ryan Crogan," Amezola said. "It was like, hey, guess what? We get to play each other again.'' Said Crogan: "I haven't won one of these games yet (against Amezola), so hopefully this year will be different. I want to be able to experience how much better winning feels.· Things are indeed different for both players, who articulated their thoughts on both Newport- Mesa District showdowns slated this week (Mesa visits Estancia Thursday at 6 p .m . at Orange Coast College). ·I really feel the Corona del Mar-Newport game is more of a rivalry." said Amezola, who has never seen a Battle of the Bay in person. "I drove by (Davidson Fielcij last year, and I. saw how rowdy Josh Amezola and packed the stands were," Amezola said. "It's kind of weird that I'm actually going to be playing in it this year.• Crogan agreed the emotional pitch is a tad higher for the Back Bay showdown, than in previous clashes with Costa Mesa. But he also said he will miss the chance to battle the Mustangs one last time. · u1 would really like to play them again, to tell you the truth,• Ryan Crogan Crogan said. "But I'm also looking forward to the different atmosphere that will surround Friday's game." Remaining available light, or the Sea Kings lead. But CdM senior Megan Wachtler's 7-5 triwnph over New- port's Vanessa Godbey gave the Sea Kings, top-ranked in Orange County and No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division I. the clinching set victory. Wachtler's third win, which reqillred rallying from a 4-4 dead- lock after she led, 4-0, allowed both coaches to suspend the final singles match between Alissa Scott and Erica Nelson, due to the increasing darkness, rp.ak:ing the final, 10-7, Sea Kings. Newport (12-5, 5-3. ranked sixth in the county and CIF Divi- sion I) battled back, however, on the strength of a doubles sweep from the Heather Porter-Jamie Swarberg tandem, as well as a pair of tie-breake r triumphs by doubles partners Emily Barker and Brooke Taylor.
