By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
· While the event won't take
place for another six months,
tourism officials are preparing for
the day the Olympic Torch passes
through Newport Beach en route
to the Games in Atlanta, Ga.
On that day -Sunday. Apnl 28
-tounsm bureau ofhcials hope to
line Pacific Coast Highway with
spectators from Newport Beach
all the way to the L<tguna Beach
city luruts.
"The pl<tns are already start-
ing to fall mto place," said Ros-
alind Williams, president of the
Newport Beach Conference and
Visitors Bureau. "The enthusidsm
is so high from the Olympic Com-
mittee. It's pretty awesome we're
going to be even a small part of
it. ..
The Torch Relay will begm
April 27 in Los Angeles and finish
that night in Huntington Beach.
The following day, the relay will
go down the coast through New-
port Beach. eventually ending up
in San Diego County.
Williams originally tned to
persuade the Olympic Commit-
tee to have the torch racers stay
overnight in Newport Beach
rather than Huritington. But the
current arrangement will bnng
plenty of exposure to the city, she
said
"They'll le<tve the Hunbngton
Beach Pier dt 6 a m. and are
schedule d to re ach Laguna
Beach by 8 am ," Williams said.
"So now I'm tryrng to muster
interest m getting people aJong
the road side."
Closing the road and imple-
menting crowd control measures
will be Jess difficult during early
Sunday morning hours than on a
wee kday, said Williams, who
believes reside nts of inland cities
will flock down to PCH to witness
the historicaJ event.

Water District talks
turkey with employees
U you want to know how to go
about _buying Thanksgiving
turkeys m bulk, you might want
to ask the Mesa Consolidated
Water District.
They've been buying the big,
tasty holiday birds for their
employees for at least the last 17
years.
"It's been a long-standing tra-
dition at the water district." Mesa
general manager Karl Kemp said.
"It's just a way of saying thank
you to the employees from the
board and the coaununity."
The water district's board of
directors Thursday night
approved the $1,000 expenditure,
which should pay for one twkey
for each of the . agency's 65
employees.
Kemp said his staff will begin
searching· for the best buy on
birds.
"We shop around," Kemp said.
"We usually can get them at
wholesale prices."
Coleen Scanninach, a senior
accounting specialist for the dis-
trict, has been delighting in the
Thanksgiving turkeys for the last
10 years.
.. I've always thought it was a
nice dnd generous gesture,"
Scarrninach said. •As a public
employee, you don't really get
that many extras. It's a nice token
of appreciation.•
But it's a tradition that may
come to an end.
During Thursday's board
meeting, member Mike Healey
voiced opposition to the program,
saying 1t was an inappropriate
expense.
And Friday, board member
Hank Panian echoed that senti-
ment.
•I believe the time has come
for that practice to be phased
out,• Pa.nian said. •1 was unwill-
ing to do that this year because I
felt it would be simply too abrupt
to remove a benefit like that only
a month ahead of the event.• -nna Borgatta

A MATT£R OF TIMING (BELTS)
A timing belt should be
replaced on a periodic basis;
putting the job off risks consider·
able damage to some engines.
Why? The timing belt runs from
the crankshaft to the cam-
shaft(s), which open and close
the valves. On some engines.
more durable timing chains are
used. Others make use of rub-
ber timing belts which, although
less durable, offer the advantag-
es of being less expensive,
lighter, quieter, and never need
lubrication. If the belt were to
break, the camshaft would stop
turning, but inertia would keep
the flywheel, crankshaft, con-
necting rods, and pistons mov·
ing. On a free-wheeling engine,
this poses no problem because
there is enough clearance to
keep the pistons from hitting
open valves. On an interference
engine, however. bent valves
and broken pistons may result.
HINT: . To avoid expensive repairs
on an interference engine, inspect
!ind replace the liming belt at the
intervals recommended by the car
manufacturer.
A WIPER PRIMER
The modern automobile wind·
shield wiper has its origins in the
hand-cranked wiper system devel-
oped by J.A. Apjohn In 1903. It
utilized drive brushes on each side
of the glass that pivoted from the
top of the window frame. Over
time, the brushes gave way to
strips of rubber that acted as
squeegees, but it was not until
Ormond E. Wall Installed the first
electric motor to drtve a center-
pivoting rubber )Viper blade that
the modem windshield wiper was
born In 1917. Due to the general
unreliability of electrical systems
of that era, Wiiiiam M. Folberth
developed a wtper system In 1920
that was driven by the vacuum
created by the engine. Fortunate-
ty1 this system only survived until
about World War II, when electrlc
motors returned to drive wiper
systems. History aside, all today's
drivers need to know la that wipers
ahould be replaced at least on a
seasonal basis to assure the best
vlsiblllty la rainy conditions.

Costa Mesa High football coach

"The No. l thing I hope that

37-yard field go.\l attempt went
just wide wlth 4:51 left, and,.
another skipped off a receiver's
hands in the end wne.
Perhaps even bigger, was a
15-yard penalty on fourth
down for 12 men on the field,
erasing a Sailor punt returned
by CdM to the NeWJ><?rt 24.
With second life, the Tars
extended the drive, before pin-
ning CdM at its own 8 with a
punt.
It was the pivOtal field posi-
tion tum that allowed Newport
to go 43 yards two possessions
later for the game-winner.
•we could have probably had
three TDs in the first half, ..
Freeman said. •But you never
get lUc:ky against a Newport
