Residents want to put a stop to light
• Some say South Coast Drive signal will pose
problems for G reenbrook n eighborhood .

COSTA MESA -While some
residents might like the idea of
having a traffic signal in their
neighborhood to slow speeding
cars, a group of Greenbrook-
area homeowners say they'll do
whatever they can to keep one
from going up in theirs.
They're even prepared to
fight City Hall.
About 20 residents of the
Greenbrook neighborhood near
South Coast Plaza will meet
with planning officials at 2 p.m.
Thursday at City Hall in hopes
of squashing plans to install a
traffic light within 300 feet of
the housing tract's only
entrance and exit onto South
Coast Drive.
Meanwhile, the residents
have been ·rutting the streets,·
passing out fliers to other
Greenbrook homeowners and
putting up bright pink posters
throughout the neighborhood to
spread the word and encourage
attendance at Thursday's meet-
ing.
"I'm going full blast,· said
Greenbrook resident Ellie Oliv-
er, who is spearheading the res-
idents' movement.
The controversial light,
which Amel Development
agreed to install at the oty's
request, 1s expected to help
control traffic that will be creat-
ed when the company com-
pletes its new shopping center
project at Metro Pointe.

Crockett said.
Chris wa.s placed in Orange-

The school's employees, stu-

campaigning vigorously to get
him through the child services
system quickly and back to his

The people who saw them
feared they were the paw pnnts
of a mountain lion. The rest of
the town pooh-poohed the idea.
I didn't. While 1 never saw
any of the prints, wherever
there are deer, there are moun-
tain lions. Of course, now the
deer have departed, so have any
mountain lions.
But at the time, l never
doubted the story of the Shore-
cliffs mountain lion. _
0 n the other hand, J would
be surprised if Max Dill-
man reported that a
mountain lion was catching his
goldfish. But I do accept the
opossum story. It reminds me or
my weasel story.

of the Balboa Peninsula, I kept a
lobster trap in the channel
mouth next to the West Jetty.
If you put down a lobster trap
with a buoy attached, every
boat coming m or going out
would pull your trap.
So 1 conceived or a 'diving
trap. I put the trap down without
a buoy and then dove to 1t lo
pull out lobsters and replemsh
the fish beads used for bait.
J learned to be careful to dive
only with an incommg tide
because during an outgoing tide
the water was so dirty you
couldn't see your hand m front
of your face. Qwte often, moray
eels get into lobster traps. One
does not want to grab a moray
when he thinks he is grabbing a
lobster.
So it happened that one wm-
ter day I was sitll.ng on a rock
about half way to the end of the
West Jetty preparing to d.Jve to
my trap. (All of a sudden, about
5 feet away someUung darted to
the top of a rock and Sdl there
glaring at me.
It was a weasel, about 8 mch-
e~ long, reddish-brown with
white underparts. For a aunute,
he sat there glaring at me whlle

noise.
It was obvious he was
unfneodly.
Then, qwck as a flash, he ~
appeared, only to show up agam_
on another rock, still glaring at
me and still mad. He kept it up,
disappearing from one rock,
then appearing on another until
I began to feel surrounded. I got
the ideal was trespassing on his
territory.
Although he weighed but a
few ounces, r must admit he
made me nervous. Weasels are
very tough animals. My father
once told me about seeing a
weasel facing down a bobcat in
a confrontation. I moved my trap •
a few feet farther out and never
c;aw the weasel again.
But my point is, how in the
world dJd a weasel find his way
to the west jetty on the end of
the Balboa peninsula?
I '>WI wonder about that little
creature walking or running
from some place on the main-
land all the way through New-
port, East Newport and Balboa
to the jetty
If I were to run into a weasel
here in Corona del Mar, 1t
wouldn't surprise me at all, but

THE PASSING PASTOR
It's a different setting with
thousands of people at Anaheim
Stadium, but Danny O'Neil
continues to complete his passes.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
H is dream was to play in front of large
crowds at places like Anaheim Stadium
and Jack Murphy Stadium in San
Diego. Fans would be cheering,
spotlights would be on him.
When Danny O'Neil finished his football
career at Oregon last season, after leading the
Ducks to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 37
years, most expected the NFL to come crawling
on its knees.
"If he's not in the NFL next year, it's a joke,"
Oregon teammate Josh Wilcox, a tight end, was
quoted as saying last season. "I'm in full support
of that guy."
There was only a token call by the Kansas City
Ctuefs for O'Neil to replace a holdout in mini
camp. They needed a last-minute fill-in to throw
some passes. O'Neil said thanks, but no thanks.
He was teaching a Bible study that following
mght.
Last summer, O'Neil was most certainly on
center stage before thousands of people at
Anaheim Stadium and Jack Murphy Stadium.
But it wasn't in helmet and pads with a ferocious
defensive line bearing down on a pass rush.
O'Neil was wearing God's suit of armor. Those
on their knees were not offering multi-million
dollar contracts. but in prayer.
r-rwice at Anaheim Stadium, once at the Murph,
1 O'Neil bore his testimony of faith at the
annual Harvest Crusade, where O'Neil stood on a
huge podium during the evangelical outreach,
one night at the Big A in front of an estimated
55,000 people. His devote faith was his orily pass
protection.
"Unlike football, you get used to this,· O'Neil
said. "You always get nervous in football."
O'Neil, former Corona del Mar High athlete, is
now a youth pastor in the high school ministry for
the third-largest Protestant congregation.in the
ndtion, preaching five times a week, including
three Sunday morning messages.
Good-bye football. Hello Calvary Chapel.
·willO
Last spring, when Calvary Chapel founder and
pastor Chuck Smith called, asking him to come
aboard, O'Neil came sprinting, like a quarterback
scrambling for a crucial first down in the fourth
quarter of a tie game.
")was pretty fortunate to have this
opportunity, coming out from football,• O'Neil
said. "Calvary is not a denomination, so there are
no ruJes to become a pastor. You don't have to be
in the ministry (or attend Calvary Chapel Bible
College in 1Win Peaks) to become one."
ln July, the NFL finally called. Since his days
as a Pop Warner standout m Newport Beach.
O'Neil had been waiting for that chance. It wasn't
a grandiose offer, just a quick look before training
camp. It was a long shot. no contract and
certainly no sigrung bonus, instead the proverbial
hot dog-and-Coke and we'll fly you out here.
O 'Neil, though, bad made a commitment to the
some 400 young people who show up each
week. He turned down the Chiefs' offer.
DON LEACH I DAILY PILOT
Former Oregon Ducks star Danny O'Neil ls getting out the message at Calvary Chapel High.
"My dream was to play in the NFL, and l was
having an opportunity to play, but not really,•
O'Neil said. "It wasn't hard to do. It was an easy
choice. (The Chiefs) wanted me on the flight the
next day and to come out to Kansas City, but the
next day (a Wednesday) was one of my main
Bible studies of the week and I was committed to
them. I was their high school pastor. To tell them
the NFL called and I'm not going to be here
tomorrow would show them I'm not committed to
them."
So'O'Neil called the Chiefs back, saying he
could fly out the following day, a Thursday, when
he had no Bible studies to teach. That was all the
Chiefs need~ to hear. • r know if you tell the
NFL you can't come, there will be no more
flights." he said.
truth. O'Neil was empty inside. "I just teach them the truth, because people
are bombarded with lies," said O'Neil. "I was told
if I was a celebrity and wealthy, I would be happy
and have success. But being well-known and
being in the spotlight never brought me
happiness. There was unlulfill.ment; I grew up
with a lie. I realized success and fame and
fortune was not going to bring me tulfillment."
The television exposure, the parties, and living
1 in the college football limelight came to a
spiritual halt three years ago.
Instead of attending post-game fiestas, O'Neil
would conduct Bible studies at Oregon. His life
was finally fulfilled, and it didn't come from
booze or a long touchdown pass.
·It took me a long time to realize, nothmg in
this world is going to make me happy." he said.
"I'd done all the drugs. I'd done all the alcohol. I
had been a celebrity. I had signed autographs. I'd
played on national TV. Nothing in this world had
done it, and I had to look out of this world to
Jesus Christ, who changes lives and gives total
fulfillment, peace and joy. All I had to do was ask

"I had been on television the whole week,"
O'Neil said. "People had been patting me on the
back. I had just achieved everything l wanted
and my life hadn't changed. I laid on the bed,
staring at the ceiling, feeling alone and empty."
O 'Neil had girls knocking on his door. He did

Following his Rose Bowl heroics last season. in
which he shared game MVP honors with Penn
State's Ki-Jana Carter (the No. 1 overall pick in
the NFL draft), O'Neil hit the speaking circuit in
Oregon. He spent draft day speaking at a church
in Eugene, Ore. No call ever came from the NFL.
O'Neil, who attended school at Calvary
Chapel from first through eighth grade, has
stayed in the game as the offensive coordinator
for Calvary Chapel's football team.
"I enjoy it," O'Neil said. "It's fun to be a
strategist and call plays, but I orily do it for one
reason ... because l enjoy ~g with the guys.
That's the orily reason. I'd never do it for anybody
else. I'd never think about making a career out.of

At first sight it might seem that
you should elect to declare, since
the only obvious losers are two
