Man who allegedly held gu:n

•
Juan Aispuro,
owner of PK
Burgers,
moved his
business to
Costa Mesa In
1988 and the
customers just
keep coming.
KATSUYA RAINONE--
I DAILY PILOT
HE IS
The co-owner of i;>.K Burgers,
a restaurant at the corner of Pla-
centia Avenue and 19th Street
in Costa Mesa.
EARLY START
Aispuro, 32, was born in a lit-
tle town in Durango, Mexico,
and moved. with his family to
Long Beach as a child.
He entered the food business
at the age of 14, while still in
school. working for relatives
who owned a hamburger stand
in Hollywood.
After graduating from Lake-
wood High School, Aispuro
worked as a production manag-
er for a manufacturing company
that produced time-recording
equipment,
"The company grew from 10
employees when I started work-
ing there to 100 employees after
five years. ·1 grew with the com-
pany, and after w orking there
for five years I felt I couldn't
grow any mor~," he said
THE RIGHT PLACE
At the time, his parents had a
fast-food stand in Long Beach.
"They ~ad proble ms,
because their business was in a
bad area, so I moved in with
them and took over the busi-
ness," Aispuro said. "I felt I had
very good food, but I was in a
bad area. People were afraid to
come there. I started to get wor-
ried that I wouldn't make
enough money to pay my bills."
' He talked to his older brother,
explaining to him that he felt he
could make it in the restaurant
business if he had the same
menu as in Long Beach but in a
different location.
Aispuro and his brother
asked relatives and friends to
lend them money, so they could
buy a restaurant in a better area.
They looked in the newspapers
for ads about restaurants in
Orange County.
"I found a brand-new place,
but my father saw it and told me
he didn't think I was ready for a
brand-n ew place yet," said Ais-
puro. So he kept looking, until
he found PK Burgers in Costa
Mesa .
"It was exactly what my
father had told me to start with -
a small place in a free-standitlg
building in an industrial and
commercial are~ with apart-
ments. I had a good feeling
about this place," Aispuro said.
SERVING UP SATISFACTION
Aispuro and his brother
bought P~Butgers in July 1988.
They kepi-the "bame of the
restaurant because it had
become a landmark in tl:Ie area.
The restaurant has been around
since the late 1960s, Aispuro
Said.
"We tripled the business in a
year and a half. It has been goOd," Aispuro said .
PK Burgers has 11 employees
and serves breakfast, lunch and
'dinner every day. the most pop-
ular items on the menu are haln-
burgers and fried zucchini.
"I do whatever I need to do
here. If I need to CQOk, I cook.
But m9Stly I take orders and
handle the . paperwork 1 and
bills,• Aispuro said:
Aispuro said his hobby is
being involved . in business,
pecause he really likes what he
does, ~d he has a good crew.
"The biggest interest with the
business is not the money. It is
more pexsonal satisfaction to be
able to have done something for
the community and for yourself,
esJ)ecially being a foreigner."

place when I was a deput}J dis-
trict attorney of Orange County.
Deputy Sheriff Steve Duhart
had gone to Carson City, Nev.,
to bring back a prisoner the
local authorities wanted. lie
cane~ saying be needed assis·
tance.
I was sent.
I hopped the Southern Pacif-
ic. Th.ls was before airlines.
Steve met me in Reno, and we
took the bus fpr Carson City. We
knew Les Echols (our skinflint
county auditor) would never
spring for a rented car. On the
way, Steve told me the problem.
While the governor of Neva-
da was · · ·
oner over to us, our chances of
getting him out of Carson City
were sum. The judge was bis ·
uncle, the chlef of police bis
brother-in-law and the district
attorney another brother~in-law.
We reviewed our options. We
would never get back to Reno,
same for going south toward
Bridgeport. East was the wrong
direction, so we decided to go
west -to Tahoe. Transportation
·was another problem. So was
the V{eather. The next morning.
we had three mches of snow in
Carson City, and it was snowing
in the mountains. Shades of the
Donner party.

The Rams were lte toast of

Steinbacker said he always
wanted to play football and his
dad, Cary, was his biggest
influence. Cary Steinback.er
played tackle at Costa Mesa
from 1962-1966.
If he keeps going at this rate,
it ap~ the younger
Steinbacker will get plenty of
chances to talk to reporters about
his dad and whatever else he
wants to.
Did I mention Steinbacker has
a brother named Nick.
He's 12.
