ation Commission postported
naming any future parks at the
Castaways
The commission's Tuesday-
night action came despite a rec-
ommendation by C ity Manager
Kevm Murphy that a planned
sports park at 16th Street and
Dover Drive be named a.ft.er slam
police officer Bob Henry.
While most of the commission-
ers lauded Henry and said that he
was worthy. of having a park
named after him, they felt the
procesb was moving too ~ckly.
Commi,.c;ioner Pat Beek asked
for an additional month lo review

name. ·

Tony Hermann, an assistant to
restaurant owner Hans Prager, said
the couple called to make a reser-
vation earlier Friday

amved early to inspect the restau-
rant and establish where Bush
would sit. Because the Bushes
arrived before other members of

When Foster arrived at the
restaurant. she was told that she
and three other servers would be
attending to the Bush table.
The Secret Service counseled
Foster and others not to be mti.ml·
dated by the former president.
That turned out to be an unneces-
sary piece of advice, Foster said.
Bush was easy-going and lik·
able, joked and conversed with the
servers, Foster said. ·

the third annual Daily Pilot Top
103 list gathered for a Tuesday
luncheon in their honor.
Hosted by the Balboa Bay
Club, the luncheon drew about
70 of the 103 honorees, .from
former county CEO William
Popejoy to Costa Mesa police
dog Igor and partner Officer
Paul Ellis.
About a dozen of the hon-·
orees spoke during the lun-
cheon, offertng jokes. updates
on their areas of expertise or
words of wisdom and inspira-
tion for the crowd. Among the
many highlights:
• Crab Cooker restaurant
owner Bob Roubian played the
piano and sang two of his well-
received ·compositions: "The
Popcorn Song" and "FWi, Fish,
Fish." "-
• Costa Mesa scofflaw Sid
Soffer, basking poolside in
Vegas, sent a videotaped greet-
ing: "I'.ve been in jail in the
summer, and I've been ~Vegas
in the summer. And Vegas is
better.•
• Harbor Munitj.pal Court
Judge Susanne Shaw, the court
official who issued a $250,000
bench warrant for Soffer's
arrest, waved handcuffs after
the Soffer videotape. "I'll for-
give Sid as soon as he serves his
four months," Shaw said.
• Igor "enjoyed the steak,"
Officer Ellis said as he iotro-

port, Miller said, Rabin told the
rabbi he would "do anything to
seek peace and pursue it." And
Rabin also told Miller he was
proud Israel was a democracy

the ballot, not the bullet.•

noteworthy citizens of Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa. They
were anoihted by a higher
aufhonty. .
However, now ,that you ask,
there are some people'who might
have been overlooked on that
elite roster. Consider these:
• The first Newport-Mesan
ever to sample a fish taco.
· • The.brave soul who, when
exiting Ruby's Jaguar Diner on
Coast Highway, mad~ a left-hand
turn into the tsunain.i of traffic -
-and lived to tell about it.
• Congressman Dana
Rohrabacher, who won't rest until
he gets a $500 million federal
approprlabon to turn Costa Mesa
into a surfers' paradise.
• Assemblywoman Doris
Allen's official biographer, whose

Achievements as Speaker of the

historical lore.
• For nomination as Optimist

205-pound defensive tackle, the Corona
del Mar High senior consistently succeeds as a
runt among the rogues of the trenches. But that's
not where the ambiguity ends.

Santa Margarita, the Daily Pilot Player of the
Week outclid even hunself, amassing 15 ldckles,
including eight first hits. He was also in on two
quarterback sacks.
•That's the most tackles we've had m one
game this year,• said CdM Coach Dick
Freeman, who is also the Sea Kings defensive
coordinator. "He was-in on almost a third of our
tackles."
Freeman consistently marvels at Conway's
ability to beat the odds.

finals. In the end, 1t look the term rivalry to another level.

played on four courts. so because of the ram. the girls showed up
at 12:30 p.m and the last match ended about 10:30 p.m .. • Coro-
