Jeff Bequette has retired after volunteering his time as scoubnaster for some 20 years.
Twenty years .of being· prepared
HE IS
A Costa Mesa resident who recently
retired ·atter 20 years as scoutmaster of Boy
Scout Troop 666.
Of the !50 boys Bequette has led on tnps
and hikes over the years, 23 have gone on
to become Eagle Scouts. •
The troop bas created a patch m
Bequette's honor, a patcb that will be
earned only by scouts meeting tough
requirements. ·
The patch, Bequette said, comes as "a
big surprise and a big honor."
IN THE BEGINNING
Bequette was 12 when he joined the
scouts in his hometown of McArthur, a little
town near Mount Shasta. He recalls one
scout trtp to Camp Lassen, an outing that
was so much fun be went back every sum-
mer for five years. He also attended an
international gathering of scouts, as well as
a Scout JdIDboree in Pennsylvania.
Eventually Bequette grew up, went to
UC Berkeley, joined the Army and got mar-
ried. It wasn't unW he had two sons that he
rekindled bis relationship with the scouts in
1972.
Dunng a tnp to the Sierras in 1975, the
scoubnaster asked Bequette to take over.
•And I have· been the scoutmaster ever
since,· Bequette explained.
MR.B
Long after his own sons left the .troop.
Bequette -known as Mr. B by scouts -
attended the troop's weekly meetings and
took the boys on camp-outs ana hikes every
m9nth and week-Jong trips every summer.
"We have had some really good trips,
but we had one that became a little bit too
exciting,• Bequette said, recalling a trip to
Joshua Thee National Monument where six
scouts were lost overnight in a sudden snow
stonn. They were found safe the next day,
thanks to survival techniques they had

learned as scouts.
Other trips, fortunately. have not been a~
harrowing ·I en1oy going on tnps

HIS JUST DESSERTS
Bequette has received many awards
over the years, including the-Silva-Beaver
of Orange County and the Award ol Merit.
A retired electncal engineer who still
does occasional consulting, }iequette is
president of the Orange Coast Lions Club
and enjoys following the stock market and
takes walks to keep in shape. .
And despite his retirement as a scout-
master, he will remaiJ\..active in scouting.
"1\venty years as a scoutmaster wa!.
enough. But I will still go to the meetings,
and r will keep on hilting and going on trips

don't exist, Petersen said.
In fact, Petersen believes she
earned her trip to Costd Rica
based on an interview. She fit the
qualifications by being over age
18, married and being born in the
country she would represent.
Pageant officials never even

Although she. admits to being

and recovered lrvine's onside kick in the
waning moments; and he completed his

On Irvine's ensuing series, Sevan Set-
ian's punt took a fortuitous CdM bounce,
giving the Sea Kings possession on the

botched play out of the shotgun pushed
the Sea Kings back to the Irvine 37. But

who made an excelle nt catch to the CdM

ln CdM's go-ahead ·
drive early in the
fourth quarter, Walz watched with his
head burled in the turf as wide receiver
Ryan Bums took a screen pass and
escaped several would-be tacklers down
the Cd.M sideline to the Irvine t~d llne,
setting up fullback Ryan Crogran's scor-
ing jaunt With 9:49 left in the game.
Jimmy Keane's PAT kick gave the Sea
Kings (7-3, 3-2 in league) a 22-15 lead
and a virtual lock into next week's ClF
Southern Section Division V playoffs.
Irvine (6-4, 3-2), ranked No. 5 in CIF
Division V, led at halftime, 15-7, but was
beaten in the second half by the upstart
Sea Kings.
"I don't think it was that big of an
every game."
In the second quarter, CdM threw an
intercepliort. then watched Irvine use up
the clock fQ_T 5:54 before scoring to ta.Jce
the lead, 15=7, capped by a two-point
conversion pass.
But the Sea Kings' second-half sizzle
began when George Sumner blocked an
Irvine punt, recovered by Bryan Bear at
the lrvine 47. _ • .
CdM would come back later in the
Uurd and score ~ Walz's 14-yard touch-
down run, when be lulced two Irvine
defenders and carried another to paydirt
with 2:33 left. Tom O'Meara's two-point
conversion run tied it, 15· 15. .
On the next play, Walz found Bwns, .
whose open-field maneuvers gave CdM a

the best runs I've ever had," said Bums,
who dodged four tacklers. "All I saw was

on its next possession, keyed by
O'Meara's 15-yard run to the ~e 2. Fol-

Irvine used a dozen pass plays, includ-

CdM's lead to 29-22.
