•General," but it is Emma Jane Riley
who the former county supervisor says is the
commander in chief of the family.
•This would not have been as easy for
me if she had not been there," Riley says,
casting an.affectionate glance al lus wife of
57 yea.rs. "lb.is lady right here, I would have
recruited her to be the commander of a bat-
tleship ar a division of Marines."
The Rileys are back in Newport Beach
after spending two weeks at the Mayo Clin-
ic in Minnesota. Tom Riley underwent two
successful sw-geries to relieve pressure on
his spine. The pressure had caused Riley,
83, to lose feelings in one arm and leg and
to lose control of several bodily functions.
The couple reported significant progress
during an interview at Newport Rehabilita-
tion Center where Riley will remain for
another 2-4 weeks. During the visit, Riley
sits in a wheelchair which he now has suffi-
cient upper body strength to operate on his
own. He is starting to regain feeling in his
leg as well.
"My goal is to get back to full strength,"
Riley says. "Today I took 75 steps with the
help of that wooden platform they give
you ."
Emma Jane Riley, whi:le placing full con·
fidence in her husband's •amazing recuper·

the largest muruopal bankruptcy m hlstory.
In some quarters, Riley and his fellow
board members are still blamed for failing to
provide proper oversight of then County

practices. Riley has heard the charges and
says nobody was willing to interrupt Citron
whlle lus strategies were paying off.

USC. I would hope dedicated
football fans would at least rec-
ognize those names, although, I
note with some distress that Mor-
ley Drury-was a tad late in get-
ting into USC's current football
hall of fame.
Again, fame is fleeting. Take
my word fot. it, Morley Drury was
the greatest football player to
attend USC up until the 1930s.
I don't know too much about
Ernie Nevers since be was Stan-
ford, and l was USC, but I do
know Morley Drury was an all-
purpose player. He called sig-

kicked. And, of course, since

I remember him particularly
well because he was always ruce
to me and because the boss,
Frank "Finny" Finster, said tt
was a mystery to him how Don
could be so fast on the football
field and so slow behind the
counter.
Si,nce Newport Beach didn't
have a high school, Don werit to
Santa Ana High School and from
there to USC.
Of course, football speaking, it
wasn't too much of a jump
because USC played such giants
of the gndiron as Pomona, Occi-

from the Sherman lnchan Insti-

tackled. That pattern set the
stage for Morley Drury, who,
when he left the Colisewn field
for the last time in 1927 or 1928.
received an ovation never
exceeded, even by subsequent
Heisman ·nophy winners of
whom use has had a few.
After Drury left, the bac.ld1eld
became more diverse so that
when I weqt in 1929, the back-
field was usually made up of
players like Marshall Duffield,
..
Sr., quarterback, who called the
play~. passed and punted, Caius
Shaver, ha.Uback, who ran the
ball, Ernie Pinkert, halfback, who
blocked, and Jun Musick, full-
back, who made those essential
few yards for first downs.
Of course, with the new sub-
stitution rules, they seldom
stayed Ul for defense
But Don Williams from BalbOa
set the standard by which Mor-
ley Drury became an authentic
footbdll hero. So there.

They loc;t lolll ol their six starters
Boggle Horrell
from last year, when the Tars won
the mythical national championship.
•A lot of people think we're going
to be down, and we probably will,
but we'll stay in matches this year,"
Glenn said before the season on
Aug .. 25.
The Tars' grueling preseason,
which included losses against four of
the best tea.ms in Orange County
(Mater Dei, Huntington
Beach, Laguna Beach
and Dana Hills), pre-
pared them for Novem-
ber. Now it's anybody's
match.
And with this much
parity in the CIF Divi-
sion I playoffs, coin fups
are as important as good
passing and setting. The Tars won
their second consecutive flip for
home-court advantage tonight.
· "Going into the season, I al.idn't
think there was a No. 1 team, like
Newport Harbor had lasf year," said
Mira Costa Coach Daelea Aldrich,
whose squad lost to the Sailors in the
CIF Division I title match last year. "I
think it's definitely an advantage
playing on your home court. It was to
Bill Weatherwax
our advantage last Saturday (against
San Clemente), definitely. Danny
prepares his kids. It's tough to come
off a winning season, but they're
experienced in the playoffs.
"Oh, it's definitely a rematch. We
got whipped (last year) and we hope
not to do that again, but it was-pay-
back, because we whipped them
once, too."
Jeannette Hecker
and Julia Hecker are the
Sailors' two returning
starters from last year.
Sophomore Melissa
Snow is their leader in
kills, while freshman
setter and outside hitter
Jennifer Carey could be
Glenn's next All-Ameri-
can in the future.
"(Mira Costa) bas a sertpus
grudge against us,• Glenn said. "But
I don't compare this year's team to
last year's.
"When (Snow) gets a ldt cf kills,
it's not our best matches. When
we're spread out, we have our best
matches. She had the ~ost Saturday
night (19), but it was a diff&ence of
only" one or two. When we're spread
out, that's when we're much tx>tter.
We're not good enough to one per-
son to cany us, that's why Jeannette
is suc;h a key for us. When she plays
well, others play well."
Snow also had 14 digs against the
Oilers (18-1), while JU.lia Hecker (16
kills and 12 digs), Carey (17 kills and
39 assists) and Jeannette Hecker (19
digs, 12 1£11s and 22 assists) helped
spread things out. Joanna Fielder
(12 kills) and Laura Wilson (eight)
did most or the blocking, while
Meghann Haller and Kelly Lieben-
good contributed in the back row.
"We've been lucky twice in a row
(with coin flips)," Glenn said. "(The
Mustangs) are fighters and they've
got a lot to prove, and we do, too I
think with all four teams left (Mater
Dei al'ld Laguna Beach play in the
other semifinal), I wouldn't be sur-
prised in any team winning the
'whole thing ."
Mira Costa is led by setter Taryn

She has also competed in the Silver
State Classic over highway 318 and the
Virginia City Hill Climb. She not only
competes, but has recorded the fastest
speed for a woman in all th.tee Nevada
events.
Husband Rick prepares the cars for
racing and also competes on his own. In
fact, it was his desire to race that led
Michele into the sport.
· Rick raced power boats on the ocean
until he read about the road races in
Nevada in a magazine, then turned tus
attention to automobiles -namely Corvettes
which he says have a speed of 150 mph
coming out of the factory without any
modifications.
lt wasn't that Rick, 40, wasn't successful
m his quest for speed on the water, but his
thoughts and motivation turned to the land
after be won the world championslups m a
28-foot stock powerboat in 1990. ,
Having been a finalist in the national
trouble shooter competition while in high
school, he knows engines and 15 currently
preparing two new Corvettes for future ·
racing -one for Michele and the other for
himself.
Only one is factory new, however, and
he will turn this one over to Michele and
re-tool his oWn for even higher speeds,
looking to run in the 250-mph bracket
eventually.
Michele accompanied Rick on his earlier
adventures 1n Corvette racing which
gained a toehold on highway 318 in 1987
with former Indianapolis SOQ two-time
winner Rodger Ward in charge of the
program for the Silver State race.
W ard lett the group to start the Pony
EXJ)ress event two years ago and has
plans for expansion to other roads in the
Silver State in the future.
Nevada is the only state at the present
lime allowing such rao.ng.

disappointing 4-6 season.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily p;Jot
COSTA MESA -Though he
obviously wishes it wouldn't have
come as quickly, Costa Mesa
High football coach Jerry Howell
is looking forward to his -first full
off-season.
Howell said. "It's a little less of the
smashmouth, because too many
people have figured out how to
stop that. It's a modified smash-
mouth, an<t Jt includes som~ of.
the double wing. But the wing
will be tighter and the passing
game will expand."
Howell said he would like ,to
improve upon strength and run-
ning ability.

there is much to be done.
"We need to be more serious in
the weight room and more serious
about improvmg team speed by
working on our running tech-
niques. Both should help us withh
our overall team quickness.•
Howell said h e likes the
wealth of returners, but would
like to supplement that by recruit-
ing more numbers.
CORONA DEL MAR NEW P 0 ll T '
•There was a lot of accommo-
dating this year on both sides
(coaches and players),• Howell
said of the transition that began
with bis hiring May 31, after
spring practice had already
' begun at other sc;hools.
MDrastic changes wouldn't
have been fair or effective at that
point, but we're beyond that
stage now. I plan to set the tone
for what I want the program to
be."
Among the changes, Howell
explained, will be offensive phi-
losophy.
"Offensively, we're going back
to something more basi~ which
I'm calling the •crunch attack,"
•There are some kids on cam-
pus who can help us, who are
either playing other sports or not
any sports at all. We need to talk
to those kids.•
Howell will also tinker with the
schedule, and has already
replaced Mayfair with Saddle·

Westminster giving way to Cal-
vary Chapel in Week ~·
"We're going to try to keep

SCHEDULES
UNSCHEDULED VACATION TODAY
VOUEYBAU
NEWPORT BEACH -Like
most guys, Newport Harbor
Htgh's Jeff Brinkley will be
watching football Thanksgiving
Day
But it will be from the comfort
of his favorite living room chair,
rather than with a whistle around
his neck on the Sailors' practice
field.
HThis will be the first time in a
long time I won't have practice
Thursday morrung before
Thanksgiving dinner," said the
Tars' head coach, whose 10th
season at Harbor ended without a
postseason berth for the first time
since 1988.
Dunng that stretch, the Sailors
had advanced to at least the quar-
terfinals five times, including
championship game appearances
in 1992 and '94, the latter produc-
ing the school's only CIF crown.
•A$ much as I love my family.
that's not something a coach
wants to experience on a regular
basis,• said Brinkley, whose Tars
battled the verge of playoff quali-
fication, until falling to Santa
Margarita, 34-21, in Friday's reg-
ular-season finale.
·1 thmk a couple games that
hurt us in terms of trying to make
the playoffs were Canyon and
Irvine,• he said. ·Those were def-
initely two games we could have
won, and \.vith those, we could
have possibly gotten m as the
wild-card."
Among the things Brinkley plans
to coll.Slder in the commg weeks is
his future with the program.
•1 plan to take a good long
look at Uus season, ways to
unprove the team and the pro·
gram, and I will also evaluate my
future and the things I need to do,
and what I want to do ...
Brinkley credited his players'
effort and cited consistent
unprovemenl.
