Newport Blvd. back in 1946 because
he "wanted to live in the country."
He didn't know the charming white
house with the tiny front porch -which
local historians believe was built in the

And, he never dreamed the fields that
surrounded his abode would one day be
occupied by motels, auto repair shops and
convenience stores.

about the home's history from a neighbor

GIVING BAOC WHAT SHE GOT
Brizzolara said she had the
most wonderful experience
when she went to Japan with
the group on a fuU summer
scholarship in 1987. Now she is
eager to spread the word about
the non-profit organization. so
that other young people can get
the opporturuty to experience
what she dld.
When Bnzzolara was 16, she·
received a scholarship for inter-
national exchange from the
Japanese corporation her father
worked for. The scholarship
made it possible for her to spend
eight weeks in Japan with a
group of students.
She lived with an English
speaking Japanese family out·
side of Yokohama, travelling all
over the coun1Jy, meeting diplo-
mats and visiting companies like
Mazda and Toshiba. "I was
extremely lucky to go there,•
Brizzolara said.
"It was the best thing in the
world that happened to me."
Brizzolara explained how .the
experience taught her about a
different culture, and about her-
self at the same time.
"I came back a different per-
son,• she said. "I gained such
understanding of the Japanese
culture, I fell in love with it.•
Brizzolara still keeps in'"touch
with her Japanese family, and
she wishes to go back in the
future.
'MEET AND GREET'
A few years after having this
wonderful· experience, Brizzo-
lara, who is a legal secretary,
decided to start working as a
volunteer for the orgamzation.
•y wanted to dedicate myself,
bec'ause I think what the organi-
zation ... does is important, I feel
that it is important that kids
broaden their minds."
At first, Brizzolara had the
respo~ibility to •meet and
greet• at the airport, welconttn
students from other countries to
Orange County.
•A fun, fun job,• she said.
Early this year, Brizzolara
became more involved with the
group, now promoting the orga-
nization as an alumni. She is an
American overseas coordinator,
The brochures she hands out
to students and potential host
families states that 3,000 volun-
teers in 40 countries coordinates
the participation of 7 ,000 stu-
dents and their host families
annually.
KEEPING IN TOUCH
Brlzzolara is also an interna-
tional student representative for
the group, keeping in touch on a
monthly-basis -with._a; current
.Newport Harbor High School
student in Belarus. Brizzolara is
plso starting to prepare a Corona
Del Mar student for his trip to
Spain this coming summer.
"My goal this year is to get
alumni more involved, that's
how we keep the organization
going.~ Brizzolara said.

Dynamic Aqua Science de/Ivers fresh, safe water to your home.
Dynamic Aqua Science protects more than just your family - it proteGts
your home. Part of the EEC group of families, it manufactures water
treatment systems, utilizing the latest technology. We bring safe, good
tasting water to some of the poorest areas throughout the world. Now, we
are meeting the needs of the homeowner.
There are two basic ways to treat water in the home: (1) Point-Of-Use
System, where the unit is fitted under a sink or on top of a counter, serving
as the central place where the family will come to get their water. These
units (reverse osmosis or ultra violet) have been around for years and can
deliver excellent, safe water. (2) Point-Of-Entry System, which is being
chosen more and more today, delivers water via customer specifications to
the entire home directly from the main city feed. It can handle the demand of
any size home.
The Dynamic Aqua Science System comes fully installed.

For Glenn to fully enjoy his
competitive experience -i.e.

coaching rival Rocky Ciarelli.
Ciarelli, you see, is Glenn's

Ye~ of the Sailor comes to an end ~ step with fate, a downer
• Newport Harbor's 1995 season
closes with 8-7 loss to Villa Park
in CIF Division I quarterfinals;
Sailors finish 20-6 with fourth
straight quarterfinals demise.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEAOi -Loaded with nine
seniors, this was supposed to be the year
Newpoi:t Harbor High's water polo team
got over the quarterfinal wall.
Five players even dyed their hair blue
before the playoffs as a motivational march
to the CIF Southern Section Division l
finals.
"This was the year," Sailors Coach Bfil.
Barnett said. "Obviously, this has been a
very disappointing year, and in more than
pne area."
Newport Harbor (20-6), after' blowing..a
two-goal lead in the first quarter, turned
the ball over twice in. the last 1:35 of the
game and had a shot deflected by Villa
Park's Phillip Johnson with 0:49 left, as the
fourth-seeded Spartans (25-4) nipped the
host Sailors, 8-7, in the CIF Division I quar-
terfinals Tuesday.
It's the fourth year in a row in which
Newport Harbor has been eliminated in
the quarterfinals.
"Any time you can beat Newport in its
pool, you've got to feel good about it,• Vil-
la Park Coach Jeff Ehrlich ~aid. •Tue game
could've gone either way. I feel these two
teams are as evenly matched as you can
get. I have a lot of respect for Bill Barnett -
he's the dean of Orange County water
polo. Against him, I feel blessed to have. a
shot at him in bis pool."
Newport Harbor's Chris Richardson,
who scored three of his team-high four
goals on lob shots, gave the Sailors a 7-6
lead with 4:44 left in the game on an assist
by Mike Kelley.
Villa Park's Brian Pharris scored with
3:04 left to tie it, a shot that Richardson had
deflected before it fell inside the cage.
With 2:20 remaining, P~ made an
daily ·pilot h·gh school football player of the week
excellent spin move in the hole to get
around Newport Harbor's Kelley and Joht\
Jones, scoring to give Villa Park its margin
of victory. -
Newport Harbor's counterattack led to
three of its first-quarter goels, as Kelley,
Jones and Mike Peetz had steals in th~
opening seven minutes. Ricbudson scored
on a pair of lob shots in the quarter as the
Sailors built a 4-2 lead.
"I thought the main thing that hurt us
was the fact we didn't have enough
patience with our set offense," Barnett
said. 11Too many bad entry passes. Sure,
you'Ve always got to credit·the defense, but
I thought a lot of our mistakes (16
turnovers) had to do with our bad passes."
