Sportsman's Liquor in New-

place to pick up some cigarettes
and a lottery ticket. The store
•cultivates a loyal clientele with
its warm, friendly atmosphere,"
state lottery officials say.
So, Sportsman~s Liquor was
named "Retailer of the Month"
for December by the California
Lottery. On Nov. 9, lottery officialS
presented owners Catherine nan
and Hao Huynh with a plaque, a
$1,000 check and a programmed
electrical sign for their use.
The store, at 2615 Newport
Blvd., was chosen for its enthusi-
asm and creativity in promoting
the lottery, its lottery sales (the
store has generated more than
$185,000 worth of Scratchers and
on-line sales), and its c;:ommunity
invol'9'ement, lottery reps said.
And nan and Huynh didn't
·even have to take the Big Spin.

Residents hope council will red;light signal plan
• Greenbrook homeowners want
to convi.D.ce the Costa Mesa City
Council that a planned stoplight
is unsafe for their neighborhood.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Greenbrook-area
residents tonight will have another
chance to voice their concerns over the
planned installation of a traffic signal
within 300 feet of the housing tract's
entrance on South Coast Drive.
The qty Council will review the mat-

In recent weeks, Greenbrook-area
homeowners have met with the city's
planning staff in hopes of persuading offi-
cials to abandon a pla.ll' that will put a
stoplight at the main entrance to Amel
Development's new shopping center at
Metro Pointe, due to open in the spring.
"The last meeting we attended didn't
go very well," Greenbrook homeowner
Ellie Oliver said. "They were telling us it
was a se't plan and that the signal was
going to go in. The only thing they said
they-were going to be able to do tor. us
was time the lights."
Some residents are concerned that cars
stopped at a red light will block their
access onto South Coast Drive. Then,
once the light turns to green, residents
fear the flow of cars will be too heavy for
them to get across.
"It's going to create a very, very serious
problem as far as the safety of our resi-

By Anna ~arie Stolley, Daily Pilot
Minutes before his bid for
Orange County's Karaoke Enter-

"My watch just broke," Kirven
says, then grimaces .. "Do you

But Kirven's jitters soon give
way to what he calls "euphoria,"
when his name is called and be

CORONA DEL MAR -l Jome-
: coming queens? No problem.
. Football qudrterbacks? Ditto.
. Class valedlctorians? Forget it.
A CQrona del Mar High School
. Advanced Pldcement history
, class learned the hard way last
· year that hi-.torians don't have an
eac:y job
The class ran into roadblocks
dunng a redl-We history lesson
when it tned to track down the
names of all past class valedictori-·ans
: . The students searched old
: yearbooks, school records and
• local newspapers for clues to the
; identity or top Corona achieyers,
, but no luck
, . It wasn't unW tustory teacher
, Jun Tomlin made a plea last sum-
: mer in the Daily Pilot that the
r school phones began to ring.
' "The response was immedi-
• ate," Tomlin saJd. "By the end of
the. week WE! had everybody."
Now Tomlin and principal
Don Martm have created a
plaque -pdid with funds from
recyclmg cans -honoring the
valed1ctonans and pldn lo place
the honor in the school's coun-
seling ofhce
Though many of the valedlcto-
nans dldn't call the school them-
selves, other students from. the
classes called to help the dass
out, Tomlin Sdtd
"Some people I tdlked with
were saymg lhmgs like, 'Oh,
Dlane was our valedlctonan. I
admired her so much. I didn't
know her, but she was nice to me
and I want to make sure she gets
the recognition.'" Tomlin said.
"That was really nice to hear."
There were, of course, the
crank calls._
"I talked to one student who
gave her qame and said, 'l was
our valedictorian,•• Tomlin said.
"I told her, 'Marcia, I was here
then. I reµiember. You weren't.'
"It was kind of funny,• he said.
Tomlin said bis assignments
drive home the need for history to
his students.
"It's real'history," Tomlin said.
•A lot of times they won't be able
to talk to (former President
George) Bush or definitely not
Abraham Lincoln, but this is our
history. They realize they're a part
of it."
Past assignments include
locating and interviewing home-
coming queens, football captains
and student body presidents.
u One of the kids did find a
valedictorian from the 1960s and
interviewed her," Tomlin said.
~she went off about how her
graduation speech was censored
by the teachers. n was great. ..
The valedlctorian plaque will
be pr-esented to students at an
assembly in two weeks.

Dunng his 20 years in office,
Riley has come under fire . for
issues ranging from bowing to
developers to restricting airport
growth. Even critics such as UCI
political science professor Mark
Petracca are reluctant to say that
Riley 1s more accountable for the
county bankruptcy than board
members or other county admin-
istrators .•
Riley's legacy will be "the
unsought growth of south coun-

county's harshest critics and most
recognizable liberal voices.
"What continues to aggravate
people in this county is that

CORONA DEL MAR -Corona
del Mar High football coach Dick
Freeman was obvtously pleased
with the Sea Kings' 49-28 first-
round hammering of Brea Olinda
in Friday's CIF D1VlSion V playoffs.
But he hopes his players don't
start concocting any invincibility
theories.
"We're playing at a level now
where the confidence 1s coming,"
Freeman said. "But, now. we've
got to worry about staying away
from the big-head syndrome.
We've come this far with hard
work and we've got to make sure
the kids realize that."
The Sea Kings' Uu.rd straight
victory, matching their longest
winning streak of the season, Wds
indeed impressive enough to
mflate any player's self-worth.
gave up some big plays,"
Freeman said of the Brea
clash. ·we shut down
their running game, and
they have a really good
back (6-foot-1, 202-
pound junior Jerome
Owens, who gained 45 of
bis 83 yards on a fourth-
quarter touchdown run)."
Freeman said the Sea
Kings' 214 passing yards,
easily the most since the
250 amassed in a 48-7
bombardment of Garden
Grove, Sept. 15, was due
in part to Brea's attempt
to crowd the line of scrim-
mage in an attempt to
stop the ground game.
HThey opened with
eight or nine guys on the
line, with no free safety,
so we hurt them up top,•
Freeman said of Ryan
Bums' 42-yard touch-
down reception to open
the scoring. •That was
what ~ey were giving us.

Los Al, Estancia draw
top seeds for tourney
By Roger Carlson, Daily Pilot
Perennial Sunset League standout Los Alamitos and Pacific
Coast League powe rhouse Estancia have been installed as
No 1 seeds rn their respective four-team pools for the 1995
Dally Pilot Tip-Off Classic dt Newport Harbor and Corona
del Mar high schools.
The eight-team basketball tourney features three Hpool
games," startlng Nov 28, then the winner of each collides for the
bUe at Corona de! Mar Dec 2
In pool play dt Newport Harbor, it's Los Alamitos, as well as
lrvme and Laguna Beach.
At Corona del Mar, as well as Estanoa, it's Troy arid Verdugo
Hills
The featured contest m pool play comes Fnday evening with
Corona del Mar hosting Estanaa at 6 p.m.
Should Corona de! Mdr's football team advance to the CIF
semifinals, the CdM-Estanna gdffie will be moved up to 5:30 p.m.
Considering the timing of the event -the first basketball action
of the season conflicting with the tatlend of football -in several
cases there are major unknowns to deal with in terms of
personnel.
For instance, 6-foot-5 standout Darren MacDonald is one of
Corona's major basketball weapons. Even if disaster should befall
the Cd.M football team, MacDonald's basketball abilities would be
far from his potential at this point in the season.
Los Alamitos is m the same boat, and even more, but the
Griffins still have plenty of height to threaten the field, as well as
22-8 credentials from a year ago
Among Steve Brooks' outfit up front are 6-7 senior Chris
Komer, 6-6 sophomore Matt Komer and 6-7 junior Adam Seaton.
And they're not even l"1e bread 'n butter of this outfit. Thal
portion of the Gnffins' gafne revolves around 6-2 All-Sunset
League returnee Cory Johnson and 6-foot Junior Ch.rts Glass.
A 0 . Lamoureux, a 6-7 front-lmer, has been sidelined with a
severe ankle inJury and IS not expected to play. Football standout
Rashan Davis, a 6-5, 300-pound transfer out of Texas and headed
for Ohio State, would not work mto Los Al's game UJ\til far later, if
be indeed elects to play basketball at all.

RIVERSIDE -Orange Coast
College's football team closed it·
· out in appropriate fashion, con-
sidering the Pirates' track record
for 1995, as the Bucs snatched
defeat from the jaws of victory in
a Mission Conference finale Sat-
urday night, losing a 21-19 deci-
sion to the host Riverside ngers.
The Pirates had almost turned
the comer in a quest to finish 5-5
lor the season, sitting on the ball
in Riverside territory with a 19-18
lead, Riverside appearing to be
hopelessly lost with just 1:20 left
on the clock.
Orange Coast running back
Quincy Wimbish, who had put
the Pi.rates into the lead with
13:03 left in the game on a 1-yard
run, however, came up with the
answer for the Tigers in the form
of a fumble.
Freshman linebacker Matt
Driscoll picked it up and rambled
47 yards, the longest gain of the
night by either team, to the
,Pi.rates' 13-yard line as a dumb-
founded OCC Coach Bill Work-
.man looked on.
Three plays later with 0:24
showing on the clock, Riverside's
Tobin Anderson, drove the W'Ul-
ner through the upnghts.
The Pirates still were theoreb-
cally alive, but that only lasted
until the ensuing kickoff bounced
off an Orange Coast up-man and
the ball was recovered by River-
side.

A • You almost surely have the
best hand at the table, but. it does
not qualify for a jump shift. AB
responder, that. would confirm
either a self-sufficient auit of your
own or a good fit for partner. This
hand has neither, so start by
responding two diamonds and then
consider a jump in clubs at your
next tum.
