Water District -reaches ques-

dump S million gallons of treated
wastewater a day into Newport
Bay over the course of a two-
year demonstration project.
Environmeµtalists are worried
the wastewater's nutrients could
cause-an •algae bloom or that the
additional fresh water could
harm salt water ecosystems.
The report on the project con-
cludes the discharge will have
nq effect on the health of the bay
or its users. H anything, water
distrtct administrators ,claim, the
pro~ will improve the bay's
,water quality by lowering the
nitrate concentration in certain
areas of the bay.
In addition, a plan to divert
the water would take nutrients
out of the San Diego Creek dur-
ing the summer months when
the discharge is not taking place,
project proponents say.
But both Zedler and Fong said
that the proposal needs adrution-

"The district needs to
approach this with a little bit of
caution," said Fong who submit-

Zedler, whose research focus-

• Police_officer tries to save some
of the ailing birds, but to no avail.
By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH .:_ Several sea gulls
whose small bodies were wracked with con·
vu.lsions before they mysteriously died, were
discovered by police on the beach near the
Newport Pier Monday and Tuesday. ·
Orange County Health Authorities exant·
ined the bodies of 10 dead seagulls and
believe that a cotmnercial poison. possibly
one used to kill rodents, was fed to the birds
by an unidentified person, s~d RiGharcl
Evans, Chief of Veterinarian Services for the
Orange County Health Care Agency.
"We have identified a contaminant, in
whatever was fed to the birds, that did· kill
them," Evans said Tuesday afternoon:
adding that they could not yet release the
name of the product becauss of the on-
going police investigation.
The poison -whicb is not related in any
way to the ocean's water quality -attacked
the central nervous system of the gulls'
brain and caused them to. go into convul-
sions, Evans explained. .
Unfortunately, it is not a unique situa-
tion, he added.
"It's not uncommon," he said. "We have
a lot of weird people out there."
The bodies of the birds are being held at.
Orange County Animal Control as evi-
dence, Evans said. f
A Newport Beach police officer
patrolling the beach near the pier and 23rd
Street around 12:30 p .m . Monday discov-
ered two sick and five dead seagulls,
according to police reports. The officer
then searched the beach for anything sus-
picious that could explain the gulls' afflic-
tion but didn't find anything out of thEt orru-
nary, according to police reports.
The officer reportedly take~ the two sick
gulls to Costa Mesa for treatment from a
volunteer for the Pacific Wildlife Project.
One bird died en route to Costa Mesa but
the second one, a Hearman Gull at least 4
years old, is doing fine and recovering
Tuesday at the Pacific Wildlife Project facil-
ity in Laguna Niguel.
The gull is alert, walking around and
being fed trough a tube inserted into his
stomach, said Linda Evans a volunteer al
the wildlife project.
Four more ailing gulls were reportedly
found by a police officer Tuesday in the
same area. All the gulls appeared to be
healthy on the outside -the proper weight,
well-groomed and with no signs of infec-
tion or injury, Linda Evans said.
If people find ailing or dead gulls on the
beach, Richard Evans cautions them not to
touch the birds but to call the Newport
Beac.ll Police Department or. county Animal
Control.

COSI'A MESA -Before too

Santa Isabel Avenue that were
once part of the former Coastal

brand-new, single-family homes.
A Seal Beach-based home
developer is in the process of pur-

and Wtlson Street. The remaining
portion of the site that's located
right on the boulevard is not
included in the sale.
According to Costa Mesa Plan-

the city recently received a letter
from the Olson Co., the firm pur-

an interest in developing the site
into a tract of homes.
•They're thinking primarily of

Valantine said.
Olson Co. officials could not

before the City Council on Mon-

to consider changing the site's
land-use designation from
