NEWPORT BEACH The
City Council plans to adopt d res-

Sunday.
"I fully expect the council will

they will support the resoh.iuon,
which requests the water di<,lnct

after two recent independent

Feeding downtrodden
can be a fam.ily affair
W henever I feel the
need to take a relresh-
er course on the art of
hospitality, I sign up for a lun-
cheon at the Southwest Com-
mwtity Center. nus Santa Ana-based kitchen
and al fresco dining facility spe-
ciaUzes in free hot meals for the
local downtrodden.
And organizers are always
looking for .a few good hosts
and hostesses to sponsor an
occasional luncheon, provided,
that ts, you're willing to accept
their guest list of 100 to 150
hungry, nameless faces.
Forget all about morose
notions of feeding the poor or
helping the homeless.
Catering aluncll at the
Southwest Community Center
is a socially rewarding exercise
in hospitality as it was meant to
be extended, homespun and
hands-on.
My husband, Jun, my sons
and I we re introduced to the
Southwest Kitchen sevetaJ
years ago by the Jackie and
Daryl Chinn of Newport Beach
The Chinns and their three
children have for some time
now spearheaded an effort to
provide a hot meal for the Cen-
ter's penniless patrons on the
Uurd Saturday of every month.
We try to participate a cou-
ple of times a year and hnd 1t a
particularly rewarding mvest-
ment nght before the holidays.
The focus of this meal is usu-
ally a carbo-nch hash which we
prepare m gargantuan vats.
The Normandm's specialty is
"meatball ma91c," a concoction
of rice, tomatoes, com and
meatballs, spiced up with
oregano and chilies and smoth-
ered in cheese. We need to get
the meal into our oven by 5:00
· A.M. in order for it to be hot
and fully cooked by noon.
On our last few visits. we
have worked in tandem with
our friends, the Markel family
because they're hard workers
and loads of fun Our guests
always en1oy the lJvely
ambiance Tom and Helene
Markel and family brings to
our luncheons
On a recent Saturday mom-
mg, the Markeb dlld their four
lads met us at the center with
smiles on their faces and aprons
in hands. '
We all dove nght into the
familiar routine.
Helene started lo assemble
the salad1 their three-year old,
Petie, along with our young,
Charlie, buttered the bread;
FranJoe and Annie, our fourth
graders, cut the oranges; 7-year-
old James along with our first
grader, Nick, dJTanged the cook-
ies on the buffet and Tommy, the
oldest Mar~el. helped his dad
work the crowd (their specialty).
By noon. we were ready al
the buffet and the plates were
--peggy
normandin
passed do)im our assembly line
until each guest...l6ttl.s banded a
dish othot nutrition
We made the mistake of
putting Nick at the bread dis-
pensing station and observed
that he was.eating about as
much as be was doling out. But
that's one of the pleasures of
entertaining here.
I don't have to worry about
what kind of an impression my
kids are making on our guests.
The guests are so heartened to
see young ones serving them a
meal that any misconduct goes
unnoticed. Robin Leach would
have been hard-pressed to
have assembled a more colorful
guest list.
We entertained a melting pot
of cultures, ages, intellects and
dialects who all had.one tlung
in common -their manners
were impeccable. Appreciation
for our hospitality was commu-
nicated in abundant "thank
you's" and "God Bless You's".
We had quite a crowd on this
day and struggled to stretch our
casserole to accommodate sec-
onds for everybody.
When Jim scraped the ldSl
morsel out of the pan, someone
from the staff h~ded Tom a bulk
of bologna which he delicately
molded into handsome shapes
topped with shredded cheese.
Stan the Man, the center's res-
ident bouncer, fired up the bar-
becue and Jim and he grilled up
some hot dogs which we found
m the community fridge. The
kids started giving away some
spa.re Halloween candy which
they had brought as reserve.
At 1 :00, Stan the Man
announced that lunch was
"OOOOOver· and nobody
argued. Our guests humbly
dispersed. Helene gave the
sink a final scrubbing with
Comet (her personal fetish)
and we packed up our cater-
ing wagons and drove away.
We were satisfied that we
had thrown a pretty good pre-
holiday party for some of our
Orange County neighbors.
All we missed were the left-
overs.

PRESSURE TACTICS
When a car ovemeats, it is a mis-
take to remove the radiator cap in
an effort to make the engine cool off
faster. In fact, all removing the
radiator cap probably will do is
cause a further loss of coolant.
More importantly, twistin~ o~ the
radiator cap when the engine 1s hot
poses a threat of injury to those
who attempt rt. This is because the
engine's cooling systefTl operates
under pressure. Removing the
radiator cap can thus send bolling
coolant spraying In all directions.
Unfortunately. hundreds of people
are injured each year because they
failed to wait for the engine to cool
off before removing tile radiator
cap. To make sure that an engine
has cooled suffic:ieotlv, wait untif the
upper radiator hose fs cool enough
to grasp comfortably. And. once the
radiator cap Is removed, do not
assume that adding more antifreeze
will necessarily make the engine
run better. The optimum mlxture of
antifreeze and water Is 50:50.

DUCK •••
When a car IS dnven slowly up
the street and the driver feels as
though his or her seat is shifting
from side 10 side, the condition is
generally known as a waddle. This
duck~ltke movement becomes less
noticeable as speed Increases. The
most common cause is a tire defect
that should be readily noticeable
upon visual lnspectton. If a section
of the tire appears to be ballooning,
the tire should be replaced with a
spare on the spot. Other times, the
cause of a waddle can be less obvf..

ing cOde problems at the proper-
ty. The motel even bad to close
down the place for about a week
last year to complete a few dty-
mandated ln\provements.
And, although the units are
kept clean, they still could use
new carpeting. And, some of the
bathrooms are in desperate need
of a facelift.
Kathe plans to send c:l:f a notice to
the owners ol the motel. telling them
the dty will file suit against them if
any more problems are dted.
"Once notice has been prov!d-
ed, we will monitor the situation,•
Kathe said. •And if any drug or
crime problems do occur, we will
proceed with lltigatfon for abate-
ment of the public nuisance.•
But the motel's general man-
ager, Mike Forbis, claims he's
done everything he can to make
the Tahiti Inn a safe, clean place.
And, he says, he personally keeps
an eye on the guests.
"There's no drug trafficking
here,· Forbis said. "There are no
prostitutes in this motel.
"The problem is this wall
here."
Forbis claims he's constantly
running off "transients and unde-
sirables• who like to hang out
along d block wall that separates
the motel from d Lucky's super-
market parking Jot right next
door.
"It's a pertect congregation
spot.• Forbis said "They do their
drug exchanges here, and there's
nothing we can do about it
because it's not our wall. But. we're
the ones getting all the flack.•
Forbis claims he rarely sees
any of bis guests hanging out
along the wall. However, that ..
doesn't mean he doesn't recog-
nize a few faces.
"Some of them are on our do-
not-rent list,• he said.
Forb.ts has been keeping that
list for about a year. It's 11 pages
long and contains the names of
people wbo have caused prob-
lems there and at other low-bud·
get lodgings in town.
Beside each name, Forbis has
documented the reason for his or
her banishment. Traffic, drunk,
theft, damage and bad check
. writing are among the most com-
mon explanations.
"We've bent over backwards to
work with the dty and the police."
forbis said. "If they tell us there's a·
problem, we take care or it,
absolutely as soon as possible.•
As for that problem with the
drug lab, Lee said it was a
·friend · of Jhe motel that tipped
off police.
"And as soon as we heard
about it, we cooperated with the
police.-" Lee -Said~ "But, there
wasn't anything we could do to
prevent it.
"The guy looked like a con-
struction worker. He had ID. He
stayed here before and never
caused any problems.
u.That could have happened to
anybody, any motel."

"If no other information is
given to me other than (the
independent reports) I have
today, then I will be in opposi-
tion to the project," Council-
woman Jan Debay said.
The district wants to dump the
treated waste water as part ol a
plan to improve the wildlife habi-
tat in the bay while at the same
time saving $20 million over a
five-to-10-year period in sewage
disposal fees to the county.
Although the district does not
need approval from Newport
Beach to go ahead with the pro-
ject, it had wanted its support
before seeking final approval
from the Calif omia Regional
Water Quality Control Boa.rd in
;January. That agencr• director
for the Santa Ana region bu
indicated he will recommend
the project to the board.
Councilwoman Norma
Glover said she bas long been
opposed to the waste-water pro-
ject, adding she doesn't believe
the language in council resolu-
tion •goes far enough.·
"I've made three motions to
get the cowidl to oppose the
project, and 1 was never able to
get a vote on it,• Glover said. •1n
my opinion, there hasn't t>E!en
enough valid research (by the
water district) on health issues.
I'd like to see the resolution sim·
ply say we're against the pro-
ject, and we don't want it."
The coundl will vote on the
proposed resolution tonight at
their regular 7 p.m. meeting.

Corona del Mar Hlgh's Ryan Cooper (1) celebrates
another big moment ln Sea Kings' 28-0 rout of
Kennedy tn CIF quarterfinal game Friday night.
,, game Friday night
at Cal State Fullerton.
By Roger Carlson, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -Cor.ona del
Mar High football coach Dick Free-
man watched his team dominate in
virtually every department in a 28-0
victory over Kennedy Friday night,
catapulting the Sea Kings into a CIF
Division V semifinal berth against
No. 1-seeded Servile this Friday
night at Cal State Fullerton.
The Sea Kings buried the Fighting
Irish in total yardage, 387-142, had no
turnovers, nearly doubled them in
first downs (21-11), owned the clock
and out-sacked Kennedy, 5-0.
About the only "downer" came via
the officiating crew's flags. which ~kept a big lid on Corona's potential
with 13 calls for 138 yards, wiping out
one ID and eliminating another deep
drive early in the game
The first indication that it would be
~ night for the Sea Kings to overcome
came on Corona's first deep thrust.
On a play designed to lure the
defense across the line of scnmmage.
as the count wore on, tailback Tom
O'Meara stood up from his stance
and started to back off .. a legal man
ih motion.
The officials decided he was mov·
tng· forward, as in illegal motion, and
Corona was taken out of its advan-
tage.
Hit was a no-play call and after two
counts Josh (Sea View League MVP
Josh Walz) stands up, calls a color
and Tom puts his hands up and bdck.s
off, as if we were making a m.istake,"
said Freeman.
"He said we were in motion. I for-
got to tell the official before the game
tha1 we do that, so. it's probably my
fault. But it wasn't a penalty."
That was just the begmrung of the
flag-frustrations, but in the overall
picture, flags didn't carry a lot of
weight in the outcome.
Corona'~ F;ve Crowns (a front line
consisting of Tim Goode, Jeff Bog-
dan, Nick Schaumburg. KeVin Stuart

A • Without East's intervention, a

been clear. Now you have to decide

A • Obviously, the choice lies
between two no trump or two

usually play better in a suit con·
