•1 think those kinds of things
really outweighed any of the
concerns that the business com-
munity had. And, with the con -
ditional use permit, if there's
ever a problem, they can cer-
tainly bring the matter back to
us for review."
Under that use permit. the
park's management must ensure
music will not be heard outside
the facility, that its operation
won't chsrupt ne1ghborhing busi-

year, youths under the age of 18
will be turned away from the park
between 8 a.m and 3 p.m ..
except on school holidays or if
they are accompanied by a par-

Officials from the company
behind the the plan, Kaos

$250,000 to get the park off the
ground. And, even though they
have the city's blessing, there's
still a 10% chance things won't

year.
•But, we're hoping for a Janu-

referring to the Placentia Avenue
spot. ~e changes to the build-

building the ramps. And, right
now, we're d.tscussing the lay-out
with the builders, so that once
everything is hammered out with
the owner, all we'll have to'do is
go in there and start putting
things together.•
If and when the park does
open, jt will be managed by a Boy
Scout Explorer troop and will be
run much like an athlebc club,
according to Priscilla Givens,
another partner in the company
The three Kaos partners will
serve as troop leaders.
Any youths wanting to use the
facility will have to become mem-

automa~ically become Explorer
Scouts.

Depleted Sea .. KingS fall in opener, 62-52
CORONA DE( MAR -Corona deJ
Mar Migh boys basketball coach Paul
Orris had plenty of reasons available to
explain the Sea Kings•· 62:52 season-
opening loss to visiting Troy in Daily Pilot
Tip-Off Classic pool play Tuesday.
But inexperience wasn't one of them.
After dll, Troy's 5-foot-7 freshman
point guard Jerry Inzunza didn't seem to
be overwhelmed by not only his varsi-
ty, but high school debut
lnzunzd, dS well dS Vdrs1ty newcomer
Dav1d Sun, d 5-9 JWUOr reserve guard,
each scored 15 points to lead the War-
riors, who broke open a 42-42 deadlock
after three qudrt rs by out-executing the
Sea Kings
"We've got a lot of work to do, H said
Orris, hamstrung by the i,tbsence of five
football pliiy<>r~. includmg d .pair of prob·
able stdrters. ·
"We didn't run any offense m the sec-
ond half, because we parucked and start-
ed playing as indiytduals. And on
defense, we allowed too many wide-open
shots."
The Wamors' Chris Green canned one
of the aforementioned cripples Crom 6 feet
out to open the fourth-quarter scoring.
lnzu.nza added a layin 45 seconds lot·
er, after procunng one of his team-high
four steals, to give the visitors a lead they
. would never relinquish.
A pair of three-point plays by CdM
senior forward Brian Coleman pulled the
hosts within 53-51 with 2:56 left, but
Green's putback with 47 seconds remain·
ing made it 56-52 aml the Sea Kings
missed their·final two field goal attempts
to ~n inauspiciously.
It's a little hard now, Wlthout every·

• Sailors dig down deep for new coach,
but Irvine has the answer in the two team's
season opener with 54-44 victory.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pi/Ot
NEWPORT BEACH-First dates can be uneasy. But
Coach LarrY Hirsl's Newport Harbor High Sailor.; left
any sign of shyness at the doorstep Tuesday night in
thNr season o~er in the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic.
"It felt like we were playing Edison rather than
Newport Harbor," said Irvine Coach Steve Keith,
whose visiting squad earned a 54-44 victory in the first
round of pool play ,
Hirst, the Sailors' first-year basketball coach,
coached at Edic;on for 10 years before coming to New-
port Harbor, including one season as a bead coach,
when he led the Chargers to the CIF Soµthem Section
finals.
•Jt's always nose-to-nose, 50-pomt gamei when we
play Edison. I think Larry is going to make it work over
here.•
The Sailors bad it working early, then tnpped ln the
third quarter, when lrvme's pressure forced five
turnovers. The Tars made only 1 of 8 fiom the field and
got outscored, 11·3.
"Irvmc came out mme aggressive on defense,"
Hi.nit aid.
Irvine's Shaun Gwnn, who scored 15 points along
with teammate Amir Rahimi, beat the third quarter's
ending buzzer with a tliiee-pointer, then sank another
trey 25 seconds into the lourth. Irvine's Blair Hudson
added a three-point play when Jacob Matlin f9uled
him on a basket inside with 7:01 left, capping the
Vaquero • run and giving them a 38-23 lead.
lrvino led at halftime, 21-20, but started to pull away
with 4:49 remamlng m the third, wben Bryan Krill
c;corod following his own steal.
Newport Harbor, however, made a run in the foU.rth
quarter.
Peter Cunrungham dramed a three-pointer, Chad q
Colucoo i.cored on a fast break, then Wes Badorek ell-'r
maxed the Sdilors' seven-point run with a dunk. fol· ~

It's believed that no Newport Harbor player had a z
dunk in a game last year. •

eight or hi points m a 14-4 Sailor run.
The hosts cut Irvine's lead to 48-44 with 1 :09 left in
the game, but didn't score again.
•we feel we need to create some offense out of ow
defense this year, and I think we had that effect in the
third quarter," Keith said. "We caused them to cough
up the ball a few times. One thing we talked about, is
that a good team stops the blet>ding. l wasn't thrilled
